What can you say when you find out that you share the same birthday as someoneelse?
Get this crucial connection skilltoday.
Hello,Michelle. How's it goingtoday?
HappySaturday. Thankyou.
Thankyou, happy Saturday toyou,too.
I love these Saturdayepisodes.
Guys, youprobably, you're going to the gym or you'rerelaxing, you're maybe you're on your way to abrunch.
Thank you for spending your Saturday withus.
Iknow.Well, it's not only aSaturday, but it's also a summerSaturday, which is the best kind ofSaturday.
So I hope our listeners are out there enjoying life and taking all ears Englishalong.
ButMichelle, do you tend to get excited for yourbirthday?
Tell me aboutit.Yes.Yes, andno, because my birthday is around the newyear.
So I alwaysget, it's at the end of thisDecember.
And I always just kind of get squished in with otherholidays.
And so I don'tknow. I don't really think about it toomuch.
But what aboutyou?100%.
So this is a massive connectiontopic.
I have to say I have a pretty darn awesomebirthday.
Yeah, when I was akid, I didn't think it was so great because all the kids werevacation.
We weren't inschool. So I didn't get the cupcakes and the singing from myclassmates, but as anadult, remember, it's August3rd.
And youtoo,right? You had theholiday.
I'm just about30.Yeah.
Just you're right between Christmas and New Year and the holidays and NewYear's.
But and this is a massive connectiontopic.
And it often tends forme, it tends to lead into like just lastweek, I was getting my blood drawn for some bloodtests.
And I connected with the lady drawing my blood because she is aLeo, but a very early Leo lateJuly.
And shesaid, isn't it awesome when our birthdayis?
Didn't you hate it when you were akid?
Because no one's saying to you inschool, but now is anamazing, as anadult.
And then we started talking about beingLeo's.
And it just blew up as this incredible connectionmoment.
Meanwhile, youknow, blood's gettingdrawn.
And I waslike, sofunny.
Well, it's a gooddistraction.
Agreat. So I'm so excited for this summerseries,Michelle.
It sounds like this is what we're going to getinto.
Yeah. We are here guys for this brand new summer series aboutbirthdays.
Andyeah, I remember lastsummer,Lindsay.
I texted you an entiremonth.
We should rememberthat.
I was so proud of myselftoo.
Yeah. I'm going to checkit.
Andoh, I get it's yourbirthday, isn'tit?
And then I was a monthearly.
Soyeah, but I appreciated thethought.
And I waslike, just come back in amonth, youknow, like,OK, yourearly, early bird onthat.
Earlybird. That'sright.
Exactly.Exactly.Well, youknow, do you know anybody whohas, some peoplesay,oh, it's my birthdaymonth.
And they make a huge deal out ofit.
It's their whole birthdaymonth.
And it's acelebration.
Are you likethat? Or do you know anyone who doesthat?
I do know people that dothat.
I wouldn't saythat. Imean, I just think because my birthday falls inAugust, it's just a great month ingeneral.
It's a sandals beach monthbarbecue.
Youknow, it'sjust, it's just a greatmonth.
So it doesn't have to be my birthdaymonth.
I just enjoyit.July,August, these are great months of theyear, youknow?
Butyeah, there are people who do that forsure.
And youknow, this is what we're gettinginto.
So let's let our listeners know about this summerseries,Michelle.
What are we doing in the next month orso?
Well, we're talking all thingsbirthday.
Imean, you evenmentioned, I don't know if we should give itaway.
One of the topics that we're going to becovering.
But thisis, Imean, guys, wehave, we don't just have the Aller's Englishpodcast.
We also have business English and we haveIELTS.
And we are going to do four part series aboutbirthdays.
So part one is going to behere.
This is partone.Hello.
How areyou? Parttwo. We're going to head over to our business Englishpodcast.
If you are preparing for something in the businessworld, if you are working and you useEnglish, if you're looking for ajob, this business English podcast isgreat.
But don't think that this is an episode over there that's only for people who are in the businessworld.
Business English can help you with your regular English and your reallife.
So definitelywait, we're going to be doing nextweek.
Part two about birthdays over on the business Englishpodcast.
And then whathappens,Lindsay?
Oh mygosh, then we come back to Aller's English for the next episode in theseries.
Andagain, these are all distinct and differentepisodes.
I gave a hint into two of thetopics, right, sharing a birthday and sharing a zodiacsign.
Talking about zodiacsigns, verycommon.
So the third episode in this series this month will be on back here on Aller'sEnglish.
So make sure you're hittingfollow, you're following theshow.
And then part four will be over with Aubrey and Jessica on the Isles EnergyPodcast.
So you want to go over there now and hit follow theretoo, guys.
I wonder what they're going to do over there around thistopic.
I need somemystery. Which I think is amystery.
It is amystery. They've told me some of theirideas.
So, you know what I'm going to weighthat.
Butdefinitely, guys, to get ready for thisseries, you got to hit follow on Aller'sEnglish, Business English andIsles, so that you don't miss any ofthem.
And it just slips through thecracks.
Andthen,yeah, I don't know where togo.
Right? Don't forget aboutit,guys.
This is goodstuff. Even if you're not in the business Englishworld, even if you're not doingIELTS, there's something for everybody that you canuse.
Yeah, complete thatloop.
Complete the series of the four episodes in our summer series in the month of July and follow all threeshows.
ButMichelle, it's all about ourlisteners.
That's why I was super excited to share an email from a listener where there was a request for a special shout out to a very speciallistener,Michelle.
Oh mygosh.Yes, this is veryexciting.
We got this really sweet message from alistener.
Lindsay, do you want to tell us aboutit?
And what did he want us todo?
Yeah, so Andres Burgos Bravo fromBogota, Colombia is one of our long time amazing loyallisteners.
And he listens to the show with hisdaughter, IsabellaBurgos.
And they listentogether.
And it's socool,Michelle, forme, to think about our listeners listening with theirfamilies, with the new generations of all our English listeners who believe in ourmotto, our belief of connection being the most important thing when it comes to learningEnglish.
We learn to connect as humanbeings, right?
Definitely.Yes, this wasgreat.
Soyeah, we wanted to give a shout out to Isabella and her classmates at theSt.
GeorgeSchool. And thenalso, ofcourse, to her father for sending out this message of herfather,Andres.
So thankyou.Yes. Thankyou,everyone, forlistening.
You guys areincredible.
And thank you for thatmessage.
It really made our dayamazing.
Thankyou. Allright,Michelle.
Let's dive into theseries.
So I amexcited. We're going to starttoday.
So partone.OK.Lindsay, have you ever met anyone who shares yourbirthday?
Oh,yes.Yeah, I love when thishappens.
I loveit. It's socool. Because for somereason, I think we think we're the only ones that have thatdate.
Yeah.Yes,exactly.Yeah,yeah.
Actually, I think Obama's birthday is like two or three days aftermine.
So that's kind ofcool.Wow.
Wow. That iscool.Yeah.
SoLindsay, we've talked on this show before about somebody sharing aname, sharing aname, and how to navigate thatconversation, and how to connect with somebody overthat.
Buttoday, we're going to get intobirthdays.
Butit's, Ifeel, even though it seems like it would be more rare to meet somebody with yourname, it'sactually, I feel very uncommon to meet somebody with yourbirthday.
But it doeshappen. And sotoday, we're going to talk about when you're inquiring about people'sbirthdays.
Because a lot of timeswhen, just for an example in mylife, if I'm talking to a parent at thepark, and theysay,oh, their child has their birthday coming up inApril.
And let's say I have a relative with a birthday inApril, or my birthday is inApril.
That person might justsay,oh, inApril.
And if that birthday means something toyou, if that month means something to yourfamily, it's kind of fun tosee,oh, when isit?
So you might ask them for moreinformation.
Maybe somebody shares yourbirthday, or somebody's the birthday of someone youknow.
So what do you think aboutthis,Lindsay?
Yeah. I think you're totallyright.
And this is a fantastic idea for a series because there is some kind of camaraderie that we find similar to thename, but maybe even stronger because it is morerare, at least in myexperience.
It's probably happenedtwo, three, four times in my life that I've found someone that has August3rd, maybe one of our listeners has thatday.
But you do feel this senseof, whoa, youknow, something's going on withus, right?
Or connectit.Right. And even if it's not exactly thedate, it's still fun to test thewaters.
Oh, maybe it's the same date of somebody Iknow, or maybe it'slike, youknow,oh, my brother's birthday is inFebruary.
If somebodysays,oh, my birthday is inFebruary, I mightsay,oh, Februarywhat?
Just out of curiosity to see if you find amatch.
And even if it'sclose, it's still kind offun.
But I find that this conversation comes up alot, actually, when a birthdaycomes.
Yeah. And I know that kids talk aboutbirthdays, like when's yourbirthday, but it's not just kids that have thisconversation.
It'sadults, youknow, we all want to know ways in which we connect with people that areunexpected.
I think it comes back to our minds as humanbeings.
How do weconnect? How do we fitin?
And having the same birthday is a big deal in asense.
It's fun to discoverthis, youknow,definitely.
So let's talk about how this conversation may go and give some ways to also contribute to theconversation.
So let's get startedhere.
So the simple way is if it comesup, justask.
So you could justsay, one's yourbirthday, right?
That's theeasiest. If somebodysaid, forexample, imagine you were talking to somebody andit's, let's say that it's the second week of July and the personsays,oh,yeah, Iwas, last week Iwent, my friends threw me a surprise birthdayparty.
Wouldn't you kind of want toknow?
Sure, ofcourse. Maybe you have the samebirthday?
Yeah. It's also just away.
Okay, I'msorry. I did it againAugust.
What did youdo?August.
What? I said the second week ofJuly.
I waslike,oh, you're going to be about yourbirthday.
That'sokay. I don't take itpersonally.
It's because you love July 4th somuch.
That's what I letus. That'sright.
I just think of that as being yourbirthday.
Just July andAugust. Somewhere in that range is mybirthday.
You don't need to know the attackdate.
It'sokay.Yeah, I also think on thisshow, we talk a lot about how do we extend theconversation.
I think a big fear we might haveis, oh mygosh, I don't know any follow-up questions toask.
This isit. We had a birthday party lastweekend.
Ooh, when's yourbirthday?
Right.Right, even if you aren't necessarily looking to connect over a specificbirthday, it's still fun tosay,oh, when isit?
And then you never know where it's going to go fromthere.
You gotit. This is just something to say to keep the conversationgoing.
So whatelse,Michelle?
Where do wego?Okay. So let's say the person says their birthday or someone's birthday is in a month that's meaningful toyou.
You have a birthdaythen.
You knowsomeone, your parents have a birthdaythen, whatever itis.
So you mightsay,oh, month themonth, and thensay, what?
Justeasy, just easy likethat.
So forexample, you couldsay,oh, Octoberwhat?
Right.Yeah, it's kind of interesting because we can't say Octoberwhen, but we can say Octoberwhat?
Whatmeaning? Meaning which date in October is yourbirthday, right?
Right.Right. And we do that alot, just with dates ingeneral.
Wesay,oh, I have ame, I'm going onvacation, starting the second week inAugust.
Oh,okay, ohwait, Augustwhat?
Right, we do that a lot with dates ingeneral.
And we do that with namestoo, don'twe?
When we're looking for someone's lastname, it'sJohn,John, why don't we say Johnwhat?
Like for the lastname? Now I'm forgetting what wesay.
Wedo, okay, that'll be another episode for anotherday.
Anotherday. Butyeah, so using this what is anint, actually kind of a high level function here guys that works at least for today'sepisode.
Just remember it's fordates,right?
Octoberwhat? October12th,right?
Or you could also say when in October or when inDecember.
Right. So when and then themonth.
Butyeah, you wouldn't say it isinteresting.
You wouldn't say Octoberwhen, but you could say when inOctober.
That'sweird. That'sweird.
We don't make therules.
We just explainthem. We tryto.
Or what's another way you could ask just a simpleway.
Oh, whatdate? Whatdate?
And that one feels lessnatural, but it makessense.
That one'sgreat. And thenMichelle, what's the nextcategory?
What's the nextsituation?
Okay, so the person tells you and let'ssay, it's thesame.
Okay. Oh mygosh.Wow, we've got theconnection.
We have amatch.Okay. So you it could you couldsay,oh, that's blanksbirthday.
So you couldsay,oh, that's my sister'sbirthday.
Oroh, that's my birthdaytoo.
Right?Oh, that's blanksbirthday.
Right. And I don't think you need to fake excitement when this happens because I think most people are justexcited.
Yeah. It's just one of those cool moments inlife.
Like Isaid, people arelike,oh,no, I own thatdate.
No oneelse. There's millions ofpeople.
Or maybe notmillions, but thousands of people in the world that share thatdate.
And then some people saytwins.
Yeah.Right. If it is the samedate, you would only say that for if it's about you and the otherperson.
Or somebody who'sthere, maybe like if I was talkingto, if I met the park with my daughter andsomebody, there's another person there and they have the samebirthday.
And I mightsay,oh,twins.
Right? There has to be somebody who is really in theplace, Ithink.
And that's also kind of like a cutething.
If youknow, if that doesn't feel right in theworkplace, forexample, you could easily end up having this conversation and you need a break from it work or a happy art work orsomething.
But if that twins doesn't feel it's a littlecute,see, it'sright.
You know what Imean? It's a littlejuvenile.
So if it doesn't feelright, don't useit.
Okay. That's thekey.Yeah.
Exactly.Yeah. But most likely the person will tell you and it's not going to be thesame, right?
It's more common that that wouldhave.
So that wouldhappen. So you couldsay,oh,blank, theblank, right?
Sosorry, that doesn't haveblank.
Blank blank blank blank blank blankblank.
That'll be the title of today'sepisode.
Blank theblank.Okay. Allright.
Here wego. Forexample, you couldsay,oh, I'm the13th,right?
So somebodysays,oh, like it would be a little bit awkward if somebodysaid,oh, my birthday is June 2nd and your birthday is June11th.
And you justsay,oh,okay.
Right. Youwould,oh, a June2nd.
Oh,oh,okay.Actually, youknow, then it's timesweird.
Why were youasking? Why wereyou, youknow, so you would want toshare?
Oh, I'm the 13th oroh, my brother is the fourth or something likethat.
Exactly. Close that conversationloop.
Show them why you wereasking, why you were excited to know and then moveon, right?
It would be weird and like leave a hanging thread in a conversation that can feel very awkward forpeople.
Right. Forsure. Allright.
Allright,Michelle. I am excitedto, well, we're running out oftime, but do we think we have time for the roleplayer?
Do we want to choose one ofthese?
What do yousay? Do you want to chooseone?
Okay. Let's dothis. Let's do the secondone.
Okay. We're in the workplace in thiscase.
And here wego. I'mready.
Yes. I'm taking off for mybirthday.
I'm soexcited. When's yourbirthday?
July.Oh,wow.July,what?
The18th.Oh, that's my mom'sbirthday.
Oh,wow.See, that'snice.
That's acalm, youknow, this happens all thetime.
And we've shown youguys.
Let's just go back through it realquick,Michelle.
I, youknow, yousaid, I'm taking off for mybirthday.
I'm soexcited. Isaid, you said when's yourbirthday?
And what is the contractionthere?
It's when itis. When is yourbirthday, right?
Right.Right.July. And so nowyou're, it's actually not a bad idea to go broad when you answerthat, right?
July.Right. Youdon't, you don'talways, if someone asks youthat, you don't always have to say the exactdate.
And you definitely don't have to say theyear.
That's anotherconversation.
Right.Yeah. That is like anotherconversation.
And then yousaid,oh,wow.
July, what? Because nowyou, you hear a month that's meaningful toyou.
And so you're kind ofcurious, maybe it's the samedate.
Yes. I loveit.Oh,July,what?
And then you said the18th.
And then yousaid,oh, that's my mom'sbirthday.
Right. And then you're going to say that with a sense of positiveenergy, probably, right?
Yeah.Yeah. A littleenthusiasm.
You want tosay,oh,yeah, that's my mom'sbirthday.
Right.No,you're,oh,yeah.
You do feel a sense ofaffinity.
You feel closer to theperson, even if they share a birthday with a familymember.
If you're close to that familymember, it'sjust, yeah, howwe're, it's just how we're wired as humanbeings.
Yeah. It'strue.It's, it's kind offunny, but it'strue.
It's reallyinteresting.
And that's what we're interested in all ourEnglish.
How do we find those connection moments and then use English to build that connection even further instead of gettingupset, feeling like a perfectionist and focusing on ourerrors?
Right.Right.Right.Right.
It comes at an interesting time of themonth, right?
Like, so my birthday being December30th,oh,oh,my, my mom's birthday is December30th.
Oh, did you ever get to celebrate yourbirthday?
Really? Or does it just get smushed in with thehallette?
Right. Then you can continue theconversation.
Yeah. And we may come back into thistopic.
Soit's, so it's not justabout,oh, that date is my brother'sday.
The date it's about the larger conversation around theseason, the time ofyear.
That was typical when you were akid.
How is itnow? Like I saidbefore, thebeginning, the contrast between when I was in school and you two Michelle right being in school and like not having the chance to have other kids celebrate versus life as anadult, having a summerbirthday.
Imean, I talked to the lady drawing my blood for like five minutes about this and we laughed and we connected andthat's, this islife.
This is connectionhere.
Yeah. That'sright. That'sright.
Exactly. Sowow, we did a lottoday.
Really fun way to connectguys.
