What would you say in English to say a big congratulations to our two top winners, our first and second place.
What could we say in English?
What do you think?
You know, something that's short and sweet and I know is common in British English but also American English.
Now something I say a lot is well done, right.
Because I feel like everybody's like, oh, good job.
Like, good.
You did good.
Good and good is so boring.
It's a little more formal, like, well done.
Well done.
It does feel like that's British English inspired to me, right?
It feels like it comes from British English.
But sometimes Americans, they like to adopt a bit of British English.
We think it sounds cool.
We think it sounds proper.
Yeah.
Sounds fancier.
I think, you know, we've talked about our experience traveling and working all over the world.
And I think I just worked with people from England and Australia for so many years that I just assumed some of their phrases.
Yeah, you did.
And that's something I say all the time today.
Little soccer players, right?
Well done.
Well done.
It's true.
I have noticed that about you, Jessica.
You do have a few kind of Britishisms, I guess.
Really?
You do have a few British English kind of phrases that you use, or a little slight pronunciation sometimes that I hear.
That's really interesting, right?
If we spend time abroad and our friends are British, then sometimes we might take on those pronunciations.
Right.
Definitely.
Definitely.
But what about you, Lindsay?
What do you say to somebody like a friend or maybe just an acquaintance?
OK, if they did something good.

All right, so I'm going to go in the more casual direction.
So we've gone in the more formal, but cool, sophisticated direction.
I'm going to go more casual in the opposite direction.
I would say, way to go.
Way to go.
Oh, that's nice.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I like that.
I like that.
That is very informal, right?
Way to go.
But remember... we don't just use these informal phrases with people that we know very well, right?
Especially not Americans.
We're more informal with more people than you think.
So even just like a stranger, if I just met somebody in line and maybe they won a prize in line and they're like oh oh, you're the 100th customer today.
And I don't even know this person.
I would still be like, oh my God, way to go, buddy.
Way to go.
You totally could.
Or another example, guys, if for some reason you are hosting a track meet, let's imagine it.
Okay, drag me and you are, you know, very interesting scenario, right?
That's the first thing that came to my head.
I imagine the runners, the first, second and third place, you're giving them their medals, right?
They're standing there and you could totally say well done or way to go, even if you don't know these people.
So just because it's casual doesn't mean it has to be familiar, right?
Yeah.
True.
And I also want to offer a couple bonus phrases here, because you know what, if people try really hard but they don't quite succeed.
Like a lot of people signed up for this awesome ambassador contest.
And they didn't get the top spots, but they still did really well.
Totally.
Or they tried really hard.
Like maybe they shared it a bunch, but the people they shared it with did not sign up or something.
Right.
So we could say A for effort.
That's something to just be like, you tried really hard.
Even though you didn't win, but you tried hard.
So we could say A for effort or something I say to my little soccer players.
I say, good idea.
Good idea.
Cause it's like, no, like you had, it was the right idea.
It just didn't work out, but right idea.
Yeah, that's used a lot in thinking games like tennis.
I remember we used to say that a lot in tennis.
Good idea, good thinking, good try, that kind of thing.
And our listeners are going to love that.
You just said A for effort because guys, Jessica doesn't know this, but we taught A for effort.
Oh!
A few weeks ago on the podcast.
And that just proves to our listeners guys, that we are teaching you real and natural English, because we did not plan to teach that phrase again.
So awesome.
That's so cool.
I love it so much.
That's true.
What fantastic proof, guys.
These are things we all say all the time.
So good, guys.
You're getting such real English here.
Nothing here comes from lists online.
It comes from our real natural speech, what we actually say when we're out in the real world.
