Hello everybody, welcome back to Daily Easy English Expression.
Thank you very much for downloading and listening to this podcast. I make this podcast for you.

So I hope you enjoy.
Thank you so much everybody.
Now today we've got a difficult expression.
It's actually from Latin and you may have seen it in the news.
A .D. HOC. It's two words ad hoc hoc ad hoc now ad hoc is usually used as an adjective an ad hoc committee an ad hoc decision an ad hoc investigation and what ad hoc means is something done for a very specific purpose.
There was some type of problem, some type of emergency, some type of accident.
And we need to, especially the government, the government needs to solve that one problem, okay?
So a good example would be, let's say there was a fire at a night club and many people were killed.
They died in the fire.
Okay so this is a public safety issue.
This is a public safety concern.
So the city government might decide to make an ad hoc committee to specifically discuss discuss the safety of night clubs in the city, not the safety of bowling centers, not the safety of movie theaters, just the safety of night clubs.
What can they do to improve the safety of a night club?
So they'll have an ad hoc committee and they might make some ad hoc decisions on how to improve the safety of night clubs, that's an example.
So once again, ad hoc is not really a spoken word, it's not something you walk around saying, but it's something that you will see very frequently in the news.
So you'll hear it on the news, you'll see it in the newspapers and in magazines.
ad hoc, it comes from Latin it means for a specific purpose.
So once again think like that, something formed or arranged or done for a very specific purpose.
So let's listen to the dialogue.
Where are you going?
Town hall. The city formed an Ad Hoc Committee to discuss the water problem.
Oh, it has been so dry for so long!
That's right. We need to be careful.
Yes, this is the situation right now in America, in Southern California, and in Nevada, Arizona.
it's very dry, no water, no rain, and people are starting to get worried.
So many local cities are forming ad hoc committees to discuss what they can do, what can the city do to help take care of this water problem, you know we need to limit the amount of water we're using so how can we reduce our water usage it's a big issue where I live.
What about you? What kind of ad hoc committees have been formed in your community to deal with what types of problems. Leave a message.
Today's expression is a little bit difficult Ad hoc but once again you will run into it if you read the news in English okay let's check out that dialogue two more times where are you going town hall the city formed an ad hoc committee to discuss the water problem oh it has been so dry for so long that's right we need to be careful Where you going Town Hall The City formed an ad hoc committee to discuss the water problem Oh it has been so dry for so long That's right.
We need to be careful Now tomorrows expression is a great one It's a phrasal verb It's lots of fun but you know sometimes we need to learn these more difficult expressions and words and Ad hoc is one of those all my expressions come from you the listeners you guys ask me questions and also from the news and Newspapers and sitcoms things that I'm reading things that I'm looking at today So yeah, sometimes these expressions are tough but once again when you see or when you hear a tough expression what you should do is go to Google and start searching for it.
You can look at the dictionary definition but also look in the news.
See how this expression is used.
Okay it's a great way to master vocabulary.
