Hello everyone and welcome back to the English with Neil Learn English podcast.
How is everyone doing today?
In this episode, we're going to talk about delayed gratification.
Delayed gratification.
It sounds like a complicated word, but actually the idea is quite simple.
Delayed gratification is the process, is the action of being patient or sacrificing now so that you can get something better in the future.
So how does this work?
Let's say, for example, you currently don't own a car, but one day you would like to own your dream car.
Let's say for example a BMW or Mercedes.
Now let's say now you have some money.
You have some money now and you can easily go to a used car dealership and buy a cheap used car and you can drive that car around to get you from point a to point b and you know you can do good, but That's not enough for you.
What you really want is the BMW.
You really want the Mercedes, but right now you don't have the money to purchase one of those cars.
So what do you do?
You implement delayed gratification.
You save your money for months, months and months and months.
Maybe even years.
You may even save your money for two years and three years until you finally have enough money to get your dream car.
So you're waiting, you're being patient so that you can get something better in the future.
This also works for education, right?
For most people not everyone, but most people spend from age, let's say, age three to about age 18, attending primary education, secondary education.
Okay, like we spend our formal years learning learning learning, going to kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school, high school, college.
Why do we go to school for all of these years?
Well, this is a perfect example of delayed gratification.
We go to school so that we can learn, so that we can acquire knowledge, so that we can be better in the future.
Right people attend university.
They go to specialized schools so that they can get the skills and the knowledge to apply to a job in the future.
This is an example of delayed gratification.
It's just like investing right.
Some people invest their money now and they keep investing and investing and investing.
So in the future, In 20 years, in 30 years, in 40 years, they'll have a lot of money that they can use when they decide to retire or pass on to their children.
So this is delayed gratification, right?
And I think it's great.
I mean, me personally, I implement this all the time in my life.
You guys know that I don't like taking the easy way out.
So I'm always...
Trying to find some ways to implement delayed gratification so in the future I can really really enjoy this thing that I've been working hard for.
So this is delayed gratification.
So remember that.
It's not always about getting something now, instantly.
I mean, this is good.
There's nothing wrong with getting something instantly, but when you wait for it, When you work hard for it, I think it just feels so much better in the future after you sacrificed and you were patient for that thing.
So that is it, everyone.
Delayed gratification.
All right, my friends.
