So this is the week of the executive presence reset quick, daily upgrades to strengthen the leadership signals that you are sending in your conversations and meetings.
And we're doing this now because it's when many of you are thinking about your mid-year reviews and how they're perceived by top decision makers.
And the reality is that those perceptions are being shaped every single day in your meetings and conversations.
And those promotion decisions are not being made during performance reviews.
That's just when you find out about it.
Those decisions are made in the small moments how you speak up in meetings, how you respond under pressure, what people hear about you, how they see your ideas land in conversations.
So this week is all about up leveling that executive presence.
This is day four.
So far this week we have covered speaking early to signal confidence, leading with your point to create clarity and removing language that weakens your authority.
That was yesterday.
And today we're focusing on what separates strong contributors from the leaders.
Welcome back to speak up, the number one ranked business communication podcast, where we help high-performing introvert leaders including you, social introverts turn your ideas into influence and improve business outcomes, because being brilliant doesn't automatically make you influential.
I am your host, Laura Camacho, your career accelerator, executive presence strategist and godmother.
Many high performing leaders default to giving updates.
Why?
Because we're all a bunch of analytical nerds and that's what makes sense, right?
We're explaining what's happening.
Share progress, go through the details, But that's not what C-Suite's top senior leaders are listening for.
They don't need more information.
They want to hear ownership.
That's a big difference.
An update sounds like, well, I'm working on this thing, blah, blah, blah.
Here's where things are, blah, blah, blah, red, yellow, green.
And ownership sounds more like, Here's what's happening and here's what I recommend.
That's a big difference, folks.
Executive presence comes from showing that you're not just doing the work, you're thinking about the work.
It really requires thinking about it in a different way.
Here's an example.
We're about two weeks behind and there have been delays with the venture.
Okay.
Or we're two weeks behind.
I recommend that we reallocate resources to X to get back on track, or that we do this to get back on track, or that we do that to mitigate the loss.
Recommendations folks, people want to hear your recommendations.
That is what gives an extremely different signal.
The default is just reporting the problem.
The other is leading through to a solution.
So here's a simple structure you can use.
Just a little bit of context and your recommendation.
What's happening?
What you think should happen?
And if you're thinking, oh, Laura, I need to get more than that.
Okay, give the why. the why.
Remember Simon Sinek, start with why.
Well, you can put why number three, or you could lead with that.
But what's happening, what you think needs to happen, and why.
The middle piece is your recommendation.
And that's what most of you are skipping.
So don't do that anymore.
So your executive presence reset for today is that in your next normal update, make sure you include a clear recommendation.
Don't just share information.
Add your point of view.
It doesn't have to be perfect.
They can shoot your recommendation down.
That's okay.
That's better to give a recommendation that people say no, that won't work, than not to give a recommendation.
That's how you forge recommendations, your leadership, and that's what the senior leaders are listening for.
All right.
So tomorrow we're going to talk about a subtle habit that makes you sound less confident even when your message is strong.
