Welcome back to Speak Up, the podcast for high-performing introverts, including you, social introverts where we reveal the charisma and communication secrets of A-listers so that you get the recognition and the opportunities you have earned.
I am your host, Laura Camacho, your magical executive presence coach, godmother, and strategist.
And these are the 12 days of Christmas at Speak Up where I'm giving you 12 tiny but mighty tips, from December 25th through January 6th, to help you create big executive presence today and to carry you to that next step in 2026.
So if you're ready to stop blending in and start standing out in a positive way, let's unwrap number three.
It's something most people never notice.
The leaders you admire don't rush.
They let silence work for them.
And truly in the executive levels, being able to handle silence and to impose silence is a necessary skill.
So you need to start developing that now.
When top executives pause, they're not stalling.
They're signaling power.
The pause sends a message.
Hey, I've thought about this and what I say matters and people lean in.
So when you are going to speak, insert pauses strategically.
Breathe in and silently count to three.
So I know that some of you are going to say Laura, if I do that, when I'm going to answer a question, somebody's going to jump in on top of me.
I get it.
So this is what you do.
Oh, what a great question.
So glad you asked that.
Now here's the answer.
See, I silently counted to three.
And you know that you were leaning in while that silence was going on.
It's not even three full seconds because I count to three pretty fast.
But it does four things for you instantly.
It helps you to choose your words instead of just reacting.
So it gives your brain some time.
You sound so confident.
You don't sound frantic.
It can calm any emotional things going on.
You sound like you have authority because you're so intentional.
And it's more memorable because the words are going to land with their own weight.
So pausing is not hesitation.
It's gravity.
It's executive gravity.
And it stops you from rambling.
If you pause strategically, like before you're going to say the big thing or before you answer a question, it becomes a tool of power.
It's not empty.
It's the present speaking for you.
So I want you to practice counting to three silently at key moments.
And tomorrow I'm giving you four magic words that will make you instantly sound executive.
Have a fantastic holiday season and a great day.
And I will catch you tomorrow.
