What are five foods that make us happy?
Thanks for asking.
When you're feeling a little blue, eating to feel better can be an appealing proposition,
but the reality is we often turn to junk food or sugary treats that are high in calories
and packed with salt or saturated fats.
Of course our mood can be impacted by a number of factors and there's no magic fix that
will instantly make us feel better, but there aren't actually types of food out there
that have been proven to improve brain health and thereby beat mood disorders.
How so?
Regular listeners will be familiar with happy hormone and neurotransmitter serotonin by
now.
Serotonin levels vary depending on what we eat.
Some foods are rich in tryptophan or tyrosine, both of which contribute to serotonin production.
Let's run through five types of food which are tasty and beneficial from a scientific
standpoint.
Number one is the avocado, which is packed with tyrosine and also rich in bee-group vitamins
which are beneficial to the nervous system.
Not to mention mineral sorts like potassium, calcium and magnesium.
The seed actually contains the majority of nutrients found in an avocado, including
other 70% of antioxidants, so why not sprinkle your dishes with dried and grated avocado
seed?
Avocado is a rich in omega-3, aren't they?
Indeed fatty acids have an important role to play in brain function and also impact
our emotional state.
An omega-3 deficiency stops neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline
from being released.
What's more, these kinds of fatty acids can only be found in food, which brings us nicely
onto the second type of food to make us happy.
Omega-3 rich fish, which include the likes of salmon, herring, macros and sardines.
You should aim to get two servings per week, ideally.
Researchers from University College in Cork published findings about stress-reducing
foods in the Molecular Psychiatry Journal in October 2022.
They showed that a diet with prebiotic rich foods and fermented foods cut stress by 32%
and improved sleep quality.
Collie flour is rich in prebiotics and also a good source of chryptophan, so it comes
in at number three on our list.
Dump bananas also contain chryptophan.
That's right, they do indeed, as well as magnesium.
A medium-sized 100 gram banana contains about 33 milligrams of magnesium, which helps
to regulate our nervous system.
Now, it would be a shame to get to the end of our list without mentioning dark chocolate.
It might be a bit of an indulgence, but it's definitely effective at making us feel happy.
It's a kind of natural antidepressant, containing both magnesium and theobromine, a compound
which is similar to caffeine and influences our mood.
What's more, when the cocoa content is 70% or higher, dark chocolate contains a mood-enhancing
compound on a phenylethylomine.
It actually belongs to the same family as adenphetamines, and helps to release pleasure
hormone dopamine.
