Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions. you and me every day.
Come on, let's master English. Hello everybody!
Thank you so much for downloading Daily Easy English Expression Today's podcast is brought to you by Patreon.
And I'll talk about Patreon at the end of the podcast.
Today's expression is... no. I'm broke.
I'm broke. Oh, it's true. I'm broke. I am broke.
B-R-O-K-E. What does this mean? It means, I have no money.
No dinero. No pesos. No lira. No francs.
No pounds. No. The eyes. No one. No yen.
I don't know. No money. It means you have no money.
It's terrible. Yeah, it's true. You know, it's funny.
Many movie stars and sports stars... They make millions of dollars, but they always complain that they're broke.
I wish I were broke like a movie star. So to me, when you say you're broke.
Does it mean you're homeless? No. It might mean you're homeless, but...
Usually what it means is you don't have the freedom. to buy whatever you want.
You don't have the extra cash or extra money to spend on – useless things or on vacations or on nice clothes or something like that.
So to be broke, it could be daily. So for example, my payday is Friday.
I could say, I'm broke till Friday. which means I don't have any money until Friday.
So I can't. go to the movies or I can't buy a pizza that's the idea maybe you need to Loan me some money if I'm broke.
Your friend might ask that. Got it? So it's a great, very useful expression.
And let's check out a dialogue. Let's go eat lunch.
Okay. Burgers? Nah, I want something healthy.
Healthy? Healthy means expensive. I can't.
I'm broke. It's lunchtime. Let's go eat lunch.
And the person says, okay. which is short for OK Burgers.
Should we have burgers? Hamburgers? Would you like to have hamburgers?
And the guy says, nah, N-A-H. It means no.
I want something healthy, healthy food, a salad, maybe a chicken salad.
Sounds good. But the other person says healthy.
Healthy means expensive. Yeah, that's true.
Why is it that Eating healthy sometimes costs more money than eating.
At McDonald's. You can go to McDonald's in America and eat for less than $5.
But if you want to have something healthy, you got to spend like $10.
That's crazy. So once again, the guy says healthy.
Healthy means expensive. I can't. In other words, I can't afford to eat something expensive And he explains, I'm broke.
I don't have the money. I don't have the cash for something expensive.
I have the money for something cheap, but not for something expensive.
I'm broke. It's a great expression So what about you?
Are you doing okay? I hope so. I hope you're not broke.
Let's check out that dialogue two more times.
Let's go eat lunch. Okay. Burgers? Nah, I want something healthy.
Healthy? Healthy means expensive. I can't.
I'm broke. Let's go eat lunch. Okay. Burgers?
Nah, I want something healthy. Healthy? Healthy means expensive.
I can't. I'm broke. Okay, so this is horrible.
This is horrible timing. Today's sponsor is Patreon.
