Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
You and me every day. Come on, let's master English.
Hi everybody. Thanks so much for downloading.
Today's daily easy English expression. We are brought to you by DDM, the Internet's finest. online English class.
And today's expression is... To push it.
To push it. Now, usually we use push it in this type of a situation.
Don't push it. Don't push it. You pushed it.
You pushed it. Are you pushing it? You better not push it.
So if you listen to those sentences, does to push it...
Sound like a good thing or a bad thing? That's right.
To push it is not a good thing. Pushing it is not good.
What is it? Well, this is the idea. Let's say you want to borrow some money From your friend or your dad or your mom or your husband or your wife or your brother or your sister.
So, if they have some money, do you think they will... let you borrow a dollar.
Yeah. What about $5? Mom, can I have $5?
What about $10? Oh. Some of you say yeah.
What about $100? Mom, can I have $100? No.
The more money you ask for, the more your mother or father is going to be suspicious They're not going to like your request.
And let's say you ask for a dollar. And then tomorrow you ask for a dollar.
And then the next day you ask for a dollar.
Are your mom and dad going to continue to give you a dollar every day?
Maybe not. You're pushing it. You're pushing your luck.
That means your luck is almost out. Or you're pushing it, you are pushing me over the edge. and if you push me over the edge, then I fall down like on a mountain.
Don't push me over the edge. But... In this situation, if you push me over the edge, I don't fall and die.
I become very angry and I tell you absolutely no.
So when you ask somebody for a favor, be careful not to push it.
When I was young I used to love to listen to music, especially rock music.
Do you think my mom and dad wanted to listen to rock music at night?
Of course not. So my dad told me, keep the volume less than three.
OK, and what I would do is I would be. I would like to be very careful and turn the volume up to 2.9.
And my dad would get so mad. He would always walk in my room and turn it down to two.
I said don't turn it down. it up to three.
And I said, Dad, it was only 2.9. You're pushing it.
And he would turn it to two. And if I increase the volume, of course, he would turn off the music.
My dad was tough. I pushed it. When I was a kid, I used to push it.
What about you? Let's check out a dialogue.
I'm a little tired, but why not? Thank you.
Can you make garlic bread too? Uh, okay And do the dishes You're pushing it What's wrong with that guy asking his girlfriend or wife or I don't know who it was?
Can you make me spaghetti? She said she was tired, but okay.
And the guy says, make me some bread too.
And she says, okay. And then the guy says, and do the dishes.
Oh, you're pushing it, buddy. She's going to kill you.
Don't push it. Alright, let's listen to that dialogue two more times.
Can you make me spaghetti? I'm a little tired, but why not?
Thank you. Can you make garlic bread too?
Uh, okay. And do the dishes? You're pushing it!
Can you make me spaghetti? I'm a little tired, but why not?
Thank you. Can you make garlic bread too?
Uh, okay. And do the dishes? You're pushing it!
Well I hope you understand today's expression.
Once again to push it means to push your luck That means to overextend your luck, to almost use all of your luck.
But it could also mean to push someone over the edge until they got really, really angry. angry.
