Yeah. Today's expression is pathetic. Something is pathetic.
Someone is pathetic. Now, yesterday's word was poor, P-O-O-R.
Do you remember the definition we talked about?
We focused on helpless. And if you look in the dictionary, sometimes the word poor says that the meaning is similar to pathetic.
And sometimes pathetic says the meaning is similar to poor.
Well, yes, perhaps in some situations. However, in general...
When Americans use these two words, they really have different meanings.
Poor is helpless. Oh, so sad. Pathetic P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C is something that's terrible.
It's inept. It has no skill. It has no reason for being.
This is pathetic. This is terrible. This is stupid.
This is ridiculous. War is pathetic. Children who live in an area where there is war, those children are poor.
Now once again, poor and pathetic can have very similar meanings, but...
What I'm trying to tell you today is the way most americans use these two words so poor Those poor children.
War is pathetic. His leadership is terrible.
His leadership is pathetic. Your cooking is terrible.
Your cooking is pathetic. Let's check out a dialogue.
Uh, how do you spell raisin with an I or an E?
An I. What about streusel? Two S's? No, one.
Your spelling is pathetic. Another great example.
Your spelling is pathetic. Actually, my spelling...
When I was young, my spelling was really good.
I was a spelling champion. But now that I'm old, my spelling is pathetic.
And I really do get confused. Raisin, you know, a raisin like a grape, but a dried grape.
How do you spell it? R A I S I N. Or R-A-I-S-E-N.
How do you spell raisin? With an I or an E?
It's confusing for me. And the other word was streusel.
This is a type of pastry, something tasty, very delicious.
So the question was, what about streusel?
How do you spell streusel? Two S's? So what the person is asking is S-T-R-E-U-S
S-T-R-E-U S-S-E-L One S or two S's? And, of course, the person says, no, one.
In other words, one S. Your spelling is pathetic.
Well. Nowadays, thanks to computers and smartphones and Google... we don't have to worry so much about spelling usually the computer will check our spelling Thank you, computers.
