Good morning and welcome to KID News.
I'm Kim.
Today is Friday, January 23rd, 2026.
And we begin with that potentially record-setting winter storm.
We've been warning about bringing with it more than snow, ice and ridiculously low temperatures.
It may also lead to talking timber.
Meteorologists say it's rare, but the sudden nature of this Arctic blast could send temperatures plunging so fast that sap inside of some trees freezes and expands, splitting bark with a really loud bang.
Some headlines refer to it as exploding trees, but experts call that a tad exaggerated.
More likely, it'll be a sudden cacophonous crack or a piercing pop.
The wicked weather begins today and will stretch 2000 miles from the Arizona-New Mexico border to upstate New York.
Up to a foot of snow is expected, with NBC News reporting wind chills in some places could dip to 50 below zero.
All major metros from Dallas to New York City are in the storm's path and airlines are already canceling flights in anticipation.
Amazon is bringing the internet under one roof.
The world's biggest online store, is planning to open its first gigantic brick-and-mortar retail store in Orland Park, near Chicago Illinois.
The 230000 square foot space, which could fit two targets.
Inside of it will feature all the household things you'd expect from Amazon, including groceries, along with a giant warehouse fulfillment center.
If an item isn't on store shelves, customers can click on in-store kiosks and collect it while checking out.
Amazon has experimented with smaller retail stores before, like cashier-free convenience shops and Amazon Fresh grocery locations, but nothing compared to this.
Travelers complain about airports all the time, but a terminal at San Francisco International Airport has just earned bragging rights.
The International Pre-Versailles Design Awards has just named SFO's Harvey Milk Terminal 1 the world's most beautiful airport.
Celebrated for its bright public spaces, original artwork and thoughtful layout.
It beat out other airports in places like Japan, China and France.
The terminal had been in the works for five years, opening its final phase in 2024.
It's named after civil rights leader Harvey Milk and features exhibits sharing his life story.
Academy Award nominees are out, and this year's list has a few big surprises.
A single movie, the scary flick Sinners, received 16 nominations, the most ever for one film.
On the other end of the spectrum, the fan favorite Wicked for Good and its stars were left out in the cold.
In other Oscar buzz there's talk that the K-pop group from K-pop Demon Hunters could perform their nominated hit Golden, at the ceremony.
The animated film got a nod for Best Animated Feature, along with Zootopia 2.
New this year to the show an Oscar category honoring casting directors, the behind-the-scenes pros who choose the actors for their roles.
The Academy Awards will be telecast on March 15th.
Awards season has also arrived for football fans.
The Associated Press has announced five finalists for the league's most valuable player award.
Buffalo Bills Josh Allen, Jacksonville Jaguars Trevor Lawrence, San Francisco 49ers Christian McCaffrey, Los Angeles Rams Matthew Stafford and New England Patriots Drake May.
Quarterback May led the league in passer rating and helped push his team deep into the playoffs.
Running back.
McCaffrey became the second player ever to be named a finalist for three different awards, thanks to his big plays, both running and catching the ball.
Winners will be revealed on February 5th at NFL Honors, where 50 sportswriters' votes cast before the playoffs began will decide who takes home the trophies.
Still to come, a new cookie is turning dessert into a mini comic book quest.
But first we want to wish a very happy birthday to one of our super fans, Lachlan Feige of San Francisco California, who turns nine tomorrow.
Lachlan, your mom, dad and sister Sabine are so proud of your hard work at school and kind, curious personality and for keeping them updated on all things MCU.
You'll definitely want to stay tuned for the kicker, Lachlan.
Now, today's Kid News Quiz.

In today's Kid News Kicker, snack time is about to get mysterious.
Oreo and Marvel are teaming up on Marvel Oreo Stuff of Legends cookies.
They'll have superhero designs from Avengers Spider-Man, X-Men and Fantastic Four stamped on the outside.
But what's happening on the inside may leave snackers scratching their heads.
Oreo's famous cream will change color from gray to blue, and Oreo isn't saying how.
Some internet sleuths are predicting the color change will happen if and when the cookies dunked in milk.
That's not the only mystery.
The February 2nd launch includes three collectible packs, but there will be a fourth mystery pack.
Fans who scan QR codes on the packages will be able to join an interactive sweepstakes that might help unlock it.
Thanks again to the Feige's of San Francisco for sponsoring today's quiz.
Happy birthday to Marvel loving Lachlan and a shout out to his sister Sabine and all his friends and teachers at KFS school.
And hellos to our other kid news classrooms.

Before we go, a quick programming note.
Tomorrow we're sitting down with a 15-year-old from Texas who's determined to get her fellow teens not just more engaged in politics, but actually registered to vote.
She's got all sorts of energy and you won't want to miss it.
Tune in tomorrow and, of course, again on Monday.
Have a great weekend.
