Today is Thursday, September 18th, 2025.
And we begin with Waymo getting one of its biggest green lights ever.
The driverless car company has just landed a permit to operate at the San Francisco International Airport.
But before regular passengers can hop in, with no one in the driver's seat, Waymo will first test the robo-taxis with human drivers behind the wheel, then move to driverless rides with its own employees.
This is the third airport permit for the company, but notably its largest.
Currently ride service operators Uber and Lyft account for more than 750000 airport rides to and from SFO every month.
While not everyone may yet feel comfortable in a car with no driver, Waymo co-CEO Takedra Mawakana calls the service safe, reliable and magical.
The company is also in talks with Oakland International, which is right across the bay from SFO, and has announced plans to launch its driverless taxis in downtown Nashville, Tennessee.
Mount St.
Helens just pulled off the ultimate throwback.
Strong gusts of wind this week have whipped up leftover ash from the Washington State Volcano's legendary 1980 eruption, sending gray clouds swirling through the sky.
That eruption 45 years ago was one of the biggest in US history, scattering debris across 11 states.
According to the U.S.
Geological Survey.
This phenomenon, called ash resuspension, happens when dry, loose ash gets lifted back into the air by strong winds.
Officials say the latest haze poses some hazards to local air quality and to aircraft flying above the mountain, but there is no current volcanic activity.
As expected, the Federal Reserve lowered its key interest rate a quarter of a point.
The move makes getting a loan a little cheaper and credit cards a little less costly for Americans.
It also allows businesses to borrow more so they can expand and hire.
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell signaled the likelihood of one more cut, rather than two, before the end of the year.
President Trump has been pushing hard for lower interest rates, but the chairman emphasized that his team is acting independently and in the best interests of the economy.
In sports news, the Mariners' Cal Raleigh just made more MLB history.
The catcher belted his 55th home run of the year Tuesday night to pass Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle as the switch hitter with the most long balls in a single season.
As if to put a punctuation on the achievement, he hit his 56th just a few innings later.
And quarterback chaos is hitting the NFL.
Justin Fields is out for the New York Jets this Sunday after suffering a concussion last week against the Bills.
In Cincinnati, Joe Burrow is sidelined with turf toe, an injury so severe in his case it requires surgery that could keep him out until late December.
San Francisco's QB Brock Purdy is battling the same painful problem, but to a lesser degree.
His timeline for return depends on how his toe responds to treatment, with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan saying there is a chance he could be on the field for Sunday's game.
And in Washington, Commander Star quarterback Jaden Daniels sprained his knee against the Packers last week and is listed as day-to-day.
A pretend coffee shop from a TV show your parents probably love is about to become a real one in New York City.
It's called Central Perk and it was the hangout spot for the characters in Friends, one of the most popular sitcoms of all time.
With one location already open in Boston, fans will soon be able to visit a new and permanent cafe in the heart of Times Square.
It will have the TV show's same familiar cozy orange couch, some fun themed decorations and sell snacks from a menu designed by celebrity chef Tom Colicchio.

In today's Kid News Kicker, a nurse named Angela thought she was heading into a normal shift at Swedish Hospital in Washington State on a day that happened to be her 50th birthday.
But unbeknownst to her, her daughter Marisa had flown across the country to surprise her.
With the help of her mom's co-workers, Marisa snuck into an empty hospital room, hopped into bed and hid under the covers.
The other nurses even set up fake IV lines.
So when Angela walked in she had no idea what was coming.
The moment, captured on video, shows Marisa sitting up and shouting, Happy Birthday!
Followed by lots of cheers, hugs and laughter from everyone in the room, making it a birthday and a patient her mom will surely never forget.
Before we go, we want to give a big shout out to some of our terrific Kid News classrooms.
