Good morning and welcome to KID News. I'm Kim.
Today is Wednesday, August 20th, 2025. We begin with Hurricane Erin pounding the east coast of the U.S. with seriously dangerous surf.
Today and tomorrow, waves as high as 20 feet are expected from Florida up to Maine.
Even though the storm itself is expected to stay well offshore, hundreds of beaches are banning swimming.
But hardest hit appears to be coastal North Carolina, which is already getting battered by strong rip currents and large swells.
On Wrightsville Beach, lifeguards reported more than 85 rescues on Monday alone.
Mandatory evacuations from the low-lying barrier islands known as the Outer Banks are underway. as high surf is expected to swamp dunes, make key roads impassable, and potentially damage homes.
Forecasters say the worst of errands should be gone by the end of the week.
Mother Nature is also making news in the sky.
New analysis of an old lightning strike has officially put a monster bolt from 2017 in the record books.
While most measure between 2 and 10 miles long, the Wall Street Journal reports one particular megaflash stretched across 515 miles. from eastern Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana, and lasted for seven long seconds.
The World Meteorological Organization now confirms that the strike was 38 miles longer than the previous record holder, recorded in 2020. which also lit up the Great Plains.
Trump's meeting with Ukraine's President Zelensky and several other European leaders on Monday reportedly made progress but yielded no breakthroughs.
However, there is reportedly enough forward momentum for President Trump to call Russian President Putin and ask that he meet one-on-one with Mr. Zelensky in the next two weeks.
It would be the first face-to-face between the two men since the war began three years ago.
One possible location for it according to CBS News Budapest Hungary which has offered to host it.
Cambridge Dictionary may be well respected, but it's taking some heat for its latest round of 6,212 word additions.
This year, the Arbiter of English embraced internet culture to include Skibbity, Delulu, Tradwife, and Look.
There's probably no one in our audience of 8 to 13-year-olds who doesn't know what they mean.
But for the adults listening, skibbity can mean cool, not cool, or absolutely nothing at all.
Delulu is short for delusional. Tradwife refers to a married woman who promotes her love of cooking and housekeeping on social media.
And look is a twist on look. and means an eye-catching outfit while many embrace slang slide into the mainstream not everyone does as one person posted on axe Congratulations, English is no longer a language.
It's a TikTok comment section. Could you hang 10 from one coast of the U.S. to the other?
Brooke Johnson just did. Making history as the first woman to skateboard all the way from the Pacific to the Atlantic.
The 29-year-old kicked off her journey at the beach in Santa Monica, California.
And after 119 days and 3,266 miles... completed the historic feat in Virginia Beach late last week.
Brooke's motivation went beyond a world record.
She set out to raise money for Wings for Life, a nonprofit spinal cord research foundation in honor of her stepfather.
$50,000 in donations poured in, but the journey was nothing short of grueling.
She documented the highs and the many lows on her Instagram page with the final caption, If there's one thing you take away from this trip, it's that you can truly do anything you put your mind to.
Still to come, proof that not all slides are made for all people.

In today's Kid News Kicker, this Connecticut dude would probably like a do-over.
The as-yet unidentified 40-something had to be rescued from inside a tube slide at a school in the town of Vernon over the weekend.
Bad enough he was stuck in the middle part of the slide, but he was also wedged in there, folded over. with both his head and his feet pointing down.
Responding firefighters had to give the stuck slider oxygen.
It was hot, and they said he was very uncomfortable in that position. while they removed chunks of the slide to reach him.
It took about 30 minutes. Living it down may take longer.
The department's Facebook post about the incident has more than 400 comments, many of them accompanied by a laughing emoji.
