Good morning and welcome to KID News.
I'm Kim, today is Friday, June 13, 2025.
Our last day on the air until August 11th.
And we begin with a trifecta of events tomorrow.
Not only is there a huge military parade in Washington DC to celebrate the Army's 250th anniversary, but it's also President Trump's birthday and flag day.
For the version of old glory that flies today, we can thank an Ohio teenager who in 1958 whipped up a first of its kind 50 -star flag for a class assignment.
Bob Heff's teacher gave him a B -minus, saying the design was unrealistic since the U .S. only had 48 states at that time.
Bob was thinking ahead, rightfully believing that Alaska and Hawaii would soon join the union, So his teacher told him, get it accepted into Washington, then come back and I might consider changing your grade.
The teen spent the next two years trying to sell the White House on his design.
In 1960 his persistence paid off.
Then President Eisenhower called Bob to say his flag was chosen out of more than 1000 to become the official version.
And yes, Bob's teacher made good on his promise and bumped his grade up to an A.
14 -year -old football star Julian Lewis is making business moves like a pro.
The rising ninth grader may not be old enough to drive, vote or go to prom, but the star running back has already signed with a major sports agency to handle his name, image and likeness deals.
Not only has he received verbal offers from Syracuse and Virginia Tech to play football in college, he can now legally earn money from sponsorships and endorsements.
Julian, who discovered football at age 4, credits his family for keeping him focused on sports and maintaining his 3 .5 GPA.
After hopefully fulfilling his gridiron dreams, he tells NBC News he wants to be a biological engineer.
Just in time for the 50th anniversary of Jaws next week, the biggest great white ever tagged in the Atlantic is on the move.
His name is Contender.
He's 14 feet long and weighs 1 ,653 pounds.
Researchers put a tracker on him off the coast of Florida in January.
He spent a few months down there and he's just now popped up off the Outer Banks in North Carolina.
The group OCEARCH says the stopover is a critical feeding period, allowing him to build energy reserves for what may be a journey of a thousand miles or more to the northeastern U .S. and Atlantic Canada.
Contenders migration is closely monitored to advance scientific research and promote shark conservation, especially that of great whites, which face threats from over -fishing, habitat loss and climate change.
Music From the sea to the stars and the biggest, most detailed map of the Universe ever created, it's called Cosmos Web showcases 800 ,000 galaxies across a huge distance And provides a window into the world reaching back 13 .5 billion years.
Astronomers pieced it together using data from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.
The best part? It's interactive.
Anyone can use it. And if you want to give it a spin, we've put a link on our resource page.
Cuddling with a furry friend might feel comforting, but snoozing in the same bed might not be what the doctor ordered.
According to Trinity College Professor Brian Chin, who specializes in social and health psychology, sleeping with pets leads to poor sleep, even if pet owners may not agree or even realize it.
Dogs are notoriously not sound sleepers, and by moving around may affect the amount of deep sleep their owners get.
Cat owners, on the other hand, are more likely to be disturbed by the zoomies, a feline's natural burst of energy in the early hours.
While other factors like dander could even affect the way people breathe, researchers acknowledge that sleeping with your pet is a hard habit to break.
Still to come for those celebrating Father's Day this weekend, brace yourself for those corny dad jokes.
But first, happy 9th birthday to Augie and Max Frownshoe of Franklin, Tennessee.
Augie loves lacrosse, football, tubing, and Max is a Lego master and enjoys spending time at the cabin and baking.
