Good morning and welcome to Kid News, I'm Tori.
Today is Wednesday, May 28, 2025, and we begin with two North Atlantic Right Whales in the Wrong Place.
Instead of swimming in the waters off Cape Cod as they usually do this time of year, the pair is in the Bahamas and it's the first time the massive, critically endangered species has ever been spotted there.
The sighting was made by a dolphin watching tour near Bimini about 50 miles off Florida.
I thought it was fake at first, BoCatt and Isaac Ellis told the New England Aquarium.
Once in a lifetime moment for sure.
The two spring breakers are tagged and have been identified as adult females named Koala and Kurlu.
A pairing that makes it even more rare because right whales usually travel solo.
These gentle giants can grow to 52 feet long and weigh up to 140 ,000 pounds.
As of today, there are only 370 right whales left in the world's oceans.
Seems obvious enough.
If you do a study on honesty, you should probably be honest about it.
But a celebrated Harvard business professor apparently missed that memo and is now out of a job for allegedly faking results in research published between 2012 and 2020.
Among them, a study she co -authored that claimed requiring individuals to sign an honesty pledge at the beginning of a form rather than at the end, significantly boosts honest responses.
According to WGBH, bloggers that double check research flagged her work.
A forensics team was brought in and the school's top governing board ultimately determined she tweaked observations in four studies so that the findings boosted her hypotheses.
Miss Geno denied the charges and sued Harvard, but lost. It's reportedly the first time the school has fired a tenured or protected instructor since the 1940s.
Today's the day bags no longer fly free on Southwest. The carrier first announced it was dumping its decades long perk back in March in order to help boost its bottom line.
It kicks in this morning for all travelers except A -listers, those paying the highest fare, and those with a Southwest credit card. For everyone else, the first check bag will cost $35, the second $45, which is in line with all the other major carriers.
Southwest is also axing its first come, first served seating policy, but that probably won't kick in until early next year.
Air travel experts aren't convinced Southwest will see a payoff.
As travel writer Ben Schlepeck of One Mile At A Time writes, I suspect that a couple of years down the road we'll see that this plan was all a wash more or less.
It's been a minute, but there's some COVID news to report.
First, health officials are warning of a new variant that isn't necessarily stronger, but spreads faster.
NB -181 first surged in China before jumping to 22 countries, including the U .S. with cases now reported in California, New York, Arizona, Rhode Island, and Ohio.
Health officials say current vaccines are effective against it, but federal guidelines regarding who should get the shot are changing.
Yesterday, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F.
Kennedy Jr. removed healthy kids and pregnant women from that list. And last week, the FDA announced plans to limit future COVID -19 shots only to people over 65 years old or those with an underlying health condition.
In today's Kid News Notes, we're at the midway point of the nation's biggest spellathon. The script's national spelling bee kicked off yesterday in Maryland.
234 kids, all under the age of 15, are squaring off.
The finals are tomorrow night.
And WNBA star Kaitlin Clark is out for at least two weeks with a strained left quad.
according to sports reporter Christine Brennan the last time Clark missed a regular season game was November 28 2017 when she sprained her ankle during her sophomore year at Dowling High School in Iowa.

Now today's Kid News Quiz.
Where were two massive right whales spotted for the first time?
In the Bahamas. Why was a Harvard business professor fired?
For allegedly falsifying data on a study about honesty?
Southwest Airlines is grounding what long -time perk effective today?
It's bags fly free policy.
How many kids are taking part in this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee?
243. In today's KinNews Kicker, the prom was good, but what followed made them hometown heroes.
As a trio of 17 year -old boys from Whitesboro High School in New York headed to an after party, they saw a house on fire and made split -second decisions that likely saved the lives of all inside.
Donato Jelinek, Aiden Kane, and Tyler Soja split up.
One called 911. Another checked the burning garage, while the third banged on the front door and whisked two young girls and their dad to safety.
If they didn't get everyone out and call 911, it may have been three to four minutes before we got there, Maynard Fire Chief Jared Pearl said.
And by then, the house would have been fully involved.
As Tyler told WKTV, we all didn't think twice, and I'm glad we didn't.
You don't have a lot of time in those situations.
Thanks again to the Ransdens of Kines Plains, New York for sponsoring today's quiz, and a big shout out to Hallam, who's turning 12 in a few days.
And hello to our Kid News classrooms, Mrs. Edwards and her Tigers at Legacy in Lubbock, Texas.
Mrs. Kaiser and her Rockets at Oakdale and Edmond, Oklahoma.
And to Illinois for Mr. G and Mrs. Eckley and their Hawks at Highcrest Middle School in Wilmette, and Mrs. Gabie and her sixth grade junior jackets at New Athens School in New Athens, who received an award for being in the top 10 % of Illinois State for state testing.
