Today is Tuesday April 29th, 2025 and we begin with a suspected rare atmospheric phenomenon cutting power and pitching millions of Europeans into darkness.
At the center of the blackout, Spain and Portugal which share a power grid and authorities say while some electricity has come back online it could take a week or more to get everything back up and running.
At its height it caused travel chaos as trains stopped and traffic lights went out.
Schools, stores and ATMs went dark.
Even the Madrid Tennis Tournament came to a halt.
Officials do not think the cause was a cyber -attack.
More likely, one grid operator says, is the weather in Spain.
Professor Keith Bell says the outage is a reminder of how vulnerable electricity systems are.
As he told the BBC, there's at least one major power outage on the scale of this one, somewhere in the world every year.
Even so, the head of one Spanish power provider called yesterday's short -circuiting exceptional and extraordinary.
A date to begin selecting the next pope is set.
The super secret conclave will start inside the Sistine Chapel on May 7th.
135 cardinals from around the world will meet, debate, and vote.
There's no telling how long it will take, but the previous two conclaves, held in 2005 and 2013, lasted just two days.
While the cardinals are locked inside, all eyes are fixed on the chimney above the chapel.
The ballots are burned after every round of voting.
Black smoke means none of the candidates has reached the two -thirds majority needed.
White smoke means the pope has been chosen and the announcement is imminent.
The federal government is jumping on the artificial food dye bandwagon.
Following the lead of West Virginia and California, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F.
Kennedy, Jr., says his department will phase out eight colors by the end of next year.
These dyes are used in cereal, ice cream, baked goods, yogurts and more to make them look more appealing.
The goal go natural.
To that end, food makers are looking to use beets, algae, purple sweet potatoes, radishes, red cabbage, even crushed insects to make the colors.
Kennedy is a long -time critic of synthetic dyes, blaming them for certain chronic diseases and behaviour problems, especially in kids.
Getting between two major countries will soon be easier and faster.
Engineers are building an epic undersea tunnel to join Denmark and Germany.
Called the Fehmarnbelt, the 11 -mile tunnel will be the world's longest prefabricated road and rail tunnel.
Pieces of the tunnel will be placed on top of the seafloor and then joined together underwater.
In all, 90 individual segments will be linked up piece by piece, like Lego bricks.
We are breaking records with this project," says the head of the state -owned company building the tunnel.
He says immersed tunnels have been built before but never on this scale.
The tunnel is scheduled to open in 2029, and when it does, more than 100 trains and 12 ,000 cars are expected to use it every day.
Australia's favorite fugitive is a fugitive no more.
After being on The Lamb for 529 days, adventurous dachshund Valerie is back safe and sound.
Valerie vanished while on vacation with her humans at the Kangaroo Island campsite in November 2023.
Her distraught owners searched the island extensively before heading home in tears.
But then, after a year, CCTV footage showed Valerie was alive.
That spurred a team of wildlife rescue volunteers into action.
They dedicated more than 1 ,000 hours to finding the miniature black and tan hot dog, Dog, employing cameras, traps, and even Valerie's favorite treats and bed, their patience paid off, and surprisingly she's pretty darn healthy after a year and a half on the wild, especially since her owner once described her as high maintenance, an absolute princess who rides in a car seat and only wears the color pink.
