Good morning, and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Tori. Today is Monday, February 24th, 2025.
And we begin with skier Michaela Schifrin conquering her demons and the mountain.
Yesterday in Sestriere, Italy, she won her 100th World Cup race, a historic achievement in the world of sports.
The victory took a minute to sink in.
When she crossed the finish line, she couldn't find the scoreboard, then couldn't tell if it said fourth or first.
Post -victory, Mikayla acknowledged the mental block that followed a bad fall last November and isn't yet gone.
The mountain ahead of me is steep and long.
If I get there, when I get there, it'll be very sweet.
But for now, I have to take this day and be grateful because it makes me feel that maybe I can be good again.
Good again is quite an understatement.
As USA Today reported, Michaela is now with Michael Phelps, LeBron James, and Simone Biles on that rare list of athletes whose records truly are unbeatable.
A setback for Pope Francis.
In a late update yesterday, the Vatican announced that he is now battling mild kidney failure on top of pneumonia.
As of this recording, he's listed in critical condition and is still on oxygen, but is said to be alert and thankful for all the messages of support.
Pope Francis is 88 years old and is the leader of the world's 1 .2 billion Roman Catholics.
The space race is having some unexpected consequences, namely rocket debris raining down where it's not supposed to.
In January, we told you how pieces of the SpaceX starship that exploded midair landed in the Turks and Caicos.
Now comes word that in just a week's time, the nose cone of a Blue Origin rocket washed ashore in the Bahamas, and what could be the fuel tank from another SpaceX launch landed on a property in Poland.
The events highlight how what goes up must come down somewhere, and the increasing frequency of launches means more falling debris.
According to the European Space Agency, we shouldn't worry.
By its account, the risk of an individual being injured by space debris is less than 1 in 100 billion.
Our recent cold snap is no match for decades of global warming.
A massive new study shows the melting of the world's glaciers picking up steam, shrinking twice as fast now as they were just 20 years ago.
Glaciers in Alaska are reportedly melting the fastest, but even the smaller peaks in Central Europe are in retreat, 39 % smaller than they were in the year 2000.
And scientists worry they could eventually disappear.
But the study's lead author, Michael Zemp, says it's not too late, writing, every tenth of a degree of warming that we can avoid will save some glaciers and will save us from a lot of damage.
What kind of damage?
Rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and the loss of habitat for animals, including polar bears.
It won't be Duck Dynasty, but the Yankees are breaking with both tradition and the razor.
For decades, dating back to the era of owner George Steinbrenner, it's been the only team that didn't allow beards and hair couldn't touch their collar.
The clean -cut image was non -negotiable.
Even Yankee superstar Don Mattingly was famously fined and benched for not trimming his mullet.
Now the team is relaxing one of its clean -cut rules, the one regarding whiskers, to keep up with the times and make sure they don't miss out on players who insist on sporting stubble.
Social media was quick to react.
Derek Jeter photoshopped himself in uniform with what his look of choice would have been.
And even the account of the Empire State Building mocked up a shot of the upper floors with a full beard and the caption, finally.
Still to come on Kid News, more baseball news ahead, including how superstar Juan Soto thanked the teammate who ponied up his number 22 jersey.
But first, we want to give a big shout out to Tristan and Miles Ware of Chalfont, Pennsylvania, who love reading, Legos and science.
Your mom and dad love you and are so proud of you for always being you and for caring about others.
Now, today's Kid News Quiz.
Where did Michaela Schiffrin win her historic 100th World Cup race?
Cestriere, Italy Why is Pope Francis hospitalized?
he has pneumonia and now mild kidney failure glaciers are melting how much faster than 20 years ago twice as fast which baseball team just relaxed its beard rule In today's Kid News Kicker, Brett Beatty of the Mets has been driving the same car, 2016 Toyota 4Runner with 150 ,000 miles on it since high
school. In fact, it became a running joke on the team.
Well, not anymore. As a thank you for giving up his number 22 jersey to incoming star slugger Juan Soto, Soto surprised the young third baseman with a brand new $92 ,000 Chevy Tahoe in the parking lot of spring training.
As Soto told reporters, there are some guys that don't like to give away their number, but he did, and I am just thankful for that.
And I just made sure he gets something that he's really going to appreciate.
Brett seems to see it as a win -win.
I couldn't be more grateful.
I'm really excited he's on our team, and I get to learn from one of the best hitters in the game.
