Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Tori. Today is Tuesday, February 18, 2025, and we begin with ridiculously cold weather dropping from Canada into the U .S.
This morning, temperatures in parts of Montana and North Dakota could hit 45 degrees below zero Fahrenheit.
And that's the real temperature.
Add in the wind and it'll make it feel more like 60 below.
Those folks are getting the worst of it, but the deep freeze will be felt everywhere from the Canadian border to Texas.
This polar vortex is the 10th and coldest this winter.
It happens when the perfect storm of weather events in the Arctic combine to push air that should stay around the North Pole into the U .S.
and Europe. And while the icy fist of old man winter grips the plain states, those in the southeast are waterlogged.
A weekend of torrential rain caused massive flooding in Kentucky, West Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee.
The star of the NBA's All -Star Weekend wasn't an All -Star.
He wasn't even on one of the four teams.
18 -year -old Jaron Barajas, who just graduated high school last year, was chosen at random from the crowd to go up against Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard in the Mr.
Beast $100 ,000 challenge.
His task? Sink one shot from behind the three -point line before Mr.
Lillard could hit three of them.
With 30 seconds left on the clock, Jaron banked one in.
The crowd went crazy, as did TNT announcers Shaquille O 'Neal and Kenny Smith, and the mascots who picked Jaron up and dumped him in a box of money.
Jaron didn't even know he was going to the game until the day before, called the win life -changing.
It's going to help my family a lot, and definitely my future, he told reporters.
it'll help me pay for my education.
This is no tall tale.
A kayaker paddling off the coast of southern Chile was swallowed up by a whale only to be spit back out seconds later.
And it was all caught on tape.
Adrian Semenkes' dad was videotaping his son a week ago when a giant humpback emerged from the choppy water and gobbled up Adrian, who says all he remembers is something blue and white passing close to his field of vision.
Seconds later, he was inside, and then he was outside, completely unharmed.
Terrifying for sure, but as proved by the humpback's reaction, they don't fancy the taste of humans.
Scientists say Adrian probably landed in the whale's mouth while the creature was feasting on his favorites, tiny fish called krill and plankton.
The humpback couldn't technically swallow him anyway, because while humpbacks have huge mouths, their throats are tiny, only about the size of a human fist.
While many tech titans are hyper -focused on space travel, one has set his sights on reinventing another mode of flight.
Google co -founder Sergey Brin has built a 400 -foot rigid airship, the largest since the 1930s when the Hindenburg and similar giants ruled the skies.
Mr. Brin's airship, called Pathfinder One, is being tested in California at Moffat Field in the Bay Area, and he's determined not to repeat the mistakes of the pioneers.
The Hindenburg, as you may have read, caught fire and crashed when a spark ignited leaking hydrogen.
Pathfinder 1 uses safe helium instead of hydrogen, and Mr.
Brin is taking his time with the rollout.
So far, he's only conducted one untethered flight.
If and when it gets the green light, the ship's immense size will allow it to carry four tons of people and cargo long distances in an environmentally friendly way.
So, is it a blimp? It is not.
A blimp holds its shape from the gas pressure inside, while a rigid airship has a skeletal frame.
All eyes are on a volcano near Anchorage, Alaska.
After hundreds of small earthquakes in the area, geologists say Mount Spur is on the brink of eruption.
They've also observed the ground around the volcano deforming, a signal that magma is rising from within the Earth, heating up the surface and causing ripples.
But despite the signs, there's no sure way to know if an eruption will happen in days, weeks, or months.
While there are no cities in the immediate path of the volcano, ash clouds could disrupt air travel, and the ash itself could travel through the air and land on regions nearby, including Anchorage.
Scientists are rating the likelihood of an eruption anytime soon at 50 -50, and even though they are urging residents to be ready, they're not issuing evacuation orders at this point.
Still to come, an A -lister takes a green ride to the red carpet and pays the price.
But first, today's Kid News Quiz.
The temperature in parts of Montana and North Dakota could drop how low today?
Minus 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
Where did a humpback whale swallow and spit out a kayaker?
Off the coast of Chile.
What is the name of the 400 -foot airship being tested in California?
Pathfinder 1. What's the name of the teen who beat Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard in a three -point contest?
Jaron Barajas And in today's Kid News Kicker, being a big star and walking the red carpet at your own movie premiere apparently doesn't get you a pass from regular people problems.
To beat notorious London traffic, Timothee Chalamet hopped on a Lime bike to get to a recent opening of his new Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.
Pictures of his two -wheeled arrival went viral.
Renting a Lime was such a London thing to do.
And after rolling up, he even spent a few moments staring at his phone, making sure his ride was locked and secure.
But apparently he didn't leave it where he was supposed to because on the back end of his big premiere, he found himself slapped with an $80 parking ticket.
The good news? He shouldn't have any trouble paying it.
The movie has already made more than $100 million, and Timothy is in the running for an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Before we go, big shout -outs to our terrific Kid News teachers, Mrs.
Swain and her Lindemann Lyons at Lindemann School in Allen Park, Michigan.
Mrs. Callahan and her Aloha Mitchell Eagles in Room 305 at Mitchell School in Canyon Country, California.
And Mrs. Dre and her sons at St.
Francis of Assisi in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Thanks for listening.
Have a great day. We'll see you back here for more Kid News tomorrow morning.
