Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Kim. Today is Friday, January 31st, 2025.
And we begin with those two -stranded space astronauts stepping outside their cosmic home away from home together for the first time in nearly eight months.
Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore exited the International Space Station for a joint five -and -a -half -hour spacewalk yesterday.
While outside, they worked on unbolting a bulky antenna and collecting evidence of microbial life that may have hitched a ride from Earth, attached itself to the airlock of the orbiting outpost, and somehow survived the vacuum of space.
Yesterday's walk was Suni's ninth, which also happened to launch her into the galactic record books for the most time spent outside the lab by a woman, topping retired astronaut Peggy Whitson, who had clocked 60 hours and 21 minutes over her career.
Glitz and glam are typically top of mind around the Grammys, but this year's ceremony is already striking a different chord.
In place of opulent pre -parties leading up to Sunday's main event, major music labels and the recording academy have instead been focusing on victims of the disastrous Los Angeles wildfires.
The industry has already raised nearly $4 million for wildfire relief and will continue its fundraising efforts throughout the show.
That momentum got a boost during last night's two FireAid benefit concerts, which brought together blockbuster star power for the cause.
Grammy viewers tuning in Sunday night can expect to see Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, Charlie XCX, and Shakira, among many others, as well as a special tribute to the city of Los Angeles.
Basketball fans hoping to see Kaitlyn Clark light it up at NBA All -Star Weekend are going to have to wait a little bit longer.
The WNBA star has opted out of participating in next month's hoop extravaganza in San Francisco.
There had been speculation that Clark would go up against a top NBA player, similar to Sabrina Ionescu's three -point shootout against Steph Curry last year.
But it seems like Clark has her eyes set on shining in her own league first.
She plans to make her three -point contest debut as a pro at the WNBA All -Star Game in July.
For now, she'll be back in the spotlight and at her old stomping grounds this weekend as the Iowa Hawkeyes retire her number 22 college jersey.
On a dare from his kids, one dad turned a family challenge into a world title.
With the help of a kick scooter, Londoner Ben Melham set a new Guinness record for most museums visited in 24 hours.
Specifically, he hit 42 of them and only needed half the allotted time, just 12 hours, to do it.
Even in a city with over 200 museums, the challenge demanded careful planning.
The quest included quick stops at such landmarks as the Tower of London, the British Museum, and the Natural History Museum.
Covering the distance of a marathon, Ben had just minutes to collect proof of his visit to each location before racing off to the next.
Now, he's already on his next mission, breaking the record for the most museums visited in a year.
Some grocery stores have bestsellers.
Trader Joe's has fan favorites.
The quirky supermarket just announced the winners of its 16th annual Customer Choice Awards, where shoppers vote on their favorite items.
This year's overall winner, chili and lime -flavored rolled corn tortilla chips, a spicy snack that's nabbed the top prize four years in a row.
Spiced apple cider took the win for favorite beverage.
Other favorites included teeny tiny avocados, frozen butter chicken with basmati rice, and for the number one sweet treat, chocolate chip flecked sublime ice cream sandwiches.
Still to come, a purveyor of pugs rescues a remarkable number and explains why this particular pooch isn't for the faint of heart.
But first, today's Kid News quiz.
Who just set the record for the most spacewalking hours by a female astronaut?
SUNY Williams. What are the Grammys raising money for this year?
Los Angeles Wildfire Relief.
How many museums did a London dad visit in a day to set a new world record?
Forty -two. Which college team is retiring Caitlin Clark's legendary No.
22 jersey this weekend.
The Iowa Hawkeyes. And in our Kid News kicker, fur -covered clothes, non -stop snoring, and big personalities, Cheryl Gaw of South Africa knows the challenges of owning a pug.
After rescuing more than 2 ,500 of what she calls the clowns of the dog world, she and her husband have turned their home into a shelter where nearly 200 pugs now rule the roost.
While pug's short muzzles may make them cute, they can often cause breathing problems.
The squish -faced pups are also prone to eye infections and other health problems, all of which can add up to major vet bills each year.
On top of it all, according to Gah, is the unbelievable amount of dog hair.
She says you can brush them all day long, but the shedding never stops.
Before we go, shout -outs for our teachers, Ms.
Romero and her Bulldogs at Fair Oak School in Pleasant Hill, California.
Ms. Butler and her Rams at the Charlotte Jewish Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Ms. Sessoms and her Mustangs at Merch School in Washington, D .C.
And Ms. Amy and her Rangers at Greeley High School in Cumberland, Maine.
Thanks for listening.
