Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Tori. Today is Tuesday, January 21st, 2025.
First, congratulations to this year's college football national champions, the Buckeyes of Ohio State.
What a season. And we begin with the nation's 47th commander -in -chief making good on his promise to hit the ground running.
One day after being sworn in as only the second president in history behind Grover Cleveland to serve non -consecutive terms, Mr.
Trump has already signed upwards of 100 executive orders, including a 75 -day reprieve for TikTok.
The action means 170 million Americans will have access to the app for another two and a half months while Mr.
Trump looks for a solution and or a buyer.
This morning, the president will put down his pen long enough to attend the traditional national prayer service, which is at 11 a .m.
at the National Cathedral.
Vice President J .D.
Vance will also be there, along with their families, select members of Congress, and other government officials.
Those dignitaries will have to brave bone -chilling weather en route, with the temperature in D .C.
hovering around 20 degrees.
But they're among the lucky ones.
From the Great Lakes to the Gulf, at least half the U .S.
population is waking up in a deep freeze.
This morning, the wind chill in International Falls, Minnesota makes it feel like 45 degrees below zero.
In Chicago, minus 21.
And down in Houston, schools and airports are closed today as a rare potentially historic snowstorm moves in.
Up to 10 inches is also forecast in Louisiana and some snow could also fall as far east as northern Florida.
And while not facing bitter cold, the west Coast is dealing with more extreme weather of its own.
Yesterday, the winds picked up in Southern California with gusts in some areas of up to 100 miles per hour.
That prompted fire officials to again issue the most severe version of their red flag fire weather warning known as a particularly dangerous situation alert.
The worst of those winds came overnight and they're expected to subside late this morning.
Ahead of the storm, fire officials said they were ready for whatever Mother Nature had planned.
Oh, what a weekend of football it was.
As we told you at the top of the podcast, a new college champion was crowned last night.
And on the pro side, the league championships are now set with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.
Next Sunday in the AFC, it'll be the Kansas City Chiefs versus the Buffalo Bills.
And in the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles versus the Washington Commanders.
Winners head to New Orleans for the big game on February 9th.
Electric car enthusiasts are excited about a new vehicle that can travel up to 40 miles powered just by the sun.
The car, called the Aptera Launch Edition, also goes up to 400 miles from a charge, according to company officials at the Carlsbad, California headquarters.
The car's design features four solar panels on the hood, dash, roof, and hatch, and the car itself is made from a composite of carbon fiber and other materials, which makes it strong but light.
It only seats two people and has very little storage, but is almost twice as energy -efficient per mile as a Tesla S.
It made its public debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month.
Still to come, a sports legend and a pop legend meet, and their hug goes viral.
But first, today's Kid News Quiz.
What traditional event is being held today in Washington, D .C.?
The National Prayer Service.
How much of the U .S.
population is experiencing unusual and, in some cases, historic cold?
up to half. President Trump has given TikTok how many days to find a buyer or a solution.
75. Which four teams are headed to the NFL League Championships?
The Bills, Chiefs, Eagles, and Commanders.
In today's Kid News Kicker, it's the hug everyone is talking about.
Over the weekend, women's basketball phenom Caitlin Clark attended the Kansas City Chiefs game as the guest of Taylor Swift.
And Clark seemed as starstruck meeting Tay -Tay as any teenage fan would be.
Clark has made no secret of the fact that she's a big Swifty, attending multiple Eras Tour concerts and even befriending Taylor's beau, Travis Kelsey.
When Clark appeared in Swift's suite at the game on Saturday, the Indiana Fever guard looked thrilled when Swift moved in to give her a big hug.
Swift is also promised that she and Trav are going to a Fever's game soon.
Saturday was a good day for both Swift and Clark as they got to watch the Chiefs beat the Houston Texans 23 -14.
Before we go, shout outs for our fabulous Kid News teachers, including Ms.
