Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Kim. Today is Tuesday, December 10, 2024, and we begin with NASA's much -hyped moon missions delayed again.
Astronauts have been scheduled to blast off for a lap around the moon next year and for the lunar surface in September 2026.
But NASA Administrator Bill Nelson says problems with the Orion capsule's heat shield means both Artemis 2 and 3 must wait.
The heat shield protects astronauts from the fiery re -entry back into Earth's atmosphere.
When the astronauts do finally reach the moon's surface now no sooner than 2027, they'll spend almost a week there.
The first astronauts in 1969 spent less than a day taking a giant step for humankind before returning home.
And NASA's not the only one having reliability issues.
Toyota has been dethroned as the most reliable car maker, a title it has unofficially held for decades.
Consumer reports the magazine many people consult for quality rankings now rates Subaru as the most reliable car with Toyota at number three.
Toyota's luxury nameplate Lexus came in second.
The reason for the slip is mostly Toyota's recent adaptation of complex technology in its electric and hybrid cars.
This new tech has caused some recalls.
Subaru, meanwhile, has made small gradual changes to its vehicles, which has resulted in fewer problems.
It's going to be a Merry Christmas for the Juan Soto family.
The 26 -year -old outfielder has just signed with the Mets for the record -breaking sum of $765 million over 15 years.
The stunning agreement is the largest contract ever in sports history.
Soto also gets a $75 million signing bonus and can opt out following the 2029 season if the Mets don't increase his salary from 51 million to 55 million per year over the final 10 years of the contract.
Soto was part of the Aaron Judge to help lead the team to the World Series for the first time since 2009.
What's in the skies over New Jersey?
That's what everyone from local residents to the FBI is trying to figure out.
Witnesses in at least 10 counties in the Garden State are reporting and photographing multiple drones or what appear to be drones.
They have been spotted hovering over important structures like reservoirs, power lines, and railroads.
Though sometimes they just appear one at a time, more often they fly in groups, move slowly, and emit a loud humming noise.
Because they appear to be larger than most commercially available drones, a few people are saying they are UFOs.
But the FBI and Federal Aviation Administration say they are not flying saucers and do not appear to be a threat to the public, but also admit they aren't quite sure what the objects are.
A diary written by a teenager almost 80 years ago is suddenly all the rage on TikTok.
Helena Ferraioli, who works at her family's antique shop, started reading the yellow pages written by Charlotte Buxbaum in the mid 1940s.
Charlotte's entries vividly describe everyday events and historic moments like the death of President Franklin Roosevelt and the end of World War II.
Ferraioli decided to share the diary in her TikTok account, and it's now attracted more than 3 million followers, who are fascinated with how similar life back then was to today.
Charlotte talks about clothes and her hair going out to clubs and listening to pop music.
In one entry she even complains about how dull her job is.
It was her son who had handed the journal over to the antique shop back in 2019.
That son, Eric Kaplan, is a writer himself, having worked on such TV shows as The Big Bang Theory and Malcolm in the Middle.
Still to come, how Ruby Red Shoes that traveled the yellow brick road just brought in a ton of green.
But first, the Osterloos of Newport, Rhode Island have a very special shout out for the Ross family of Marinette, Wisconsin, especially daily listeners Michael, Erin, Daniel, and Katherine.
The Osterloos introduce the Rosses to kid news while stationed overseas, and both families have remained close despite landing back in the U .S.
in different states.
Michael, Erin, Daniel, and Katherine, the Osterloos hope you keep listening and learning.
We do too. Thank you for tuning in.
Now, today's Kid News Quiz.
Why are the next two Artemis moon missions delayed?
Heat shield problems.
Which carmaker is now Consumer Reports number one in reliability rankings?
Subaru. What baseball player just signed a record -breaking contract?
Juan Soto, who will be wearing a New York Mets uniform stuffed with money.
What are residents suddenly seeing over the skies of New Jersey?
Drones. In today's Kid News Kicker, a pair of red shoes that once walked on a yellow brick road have been auctioned for a jaw -dropping amount of money in Dallas, Texas.
The famous Ruby slippers that Judy Garland wore in The Wizard of Oz were expected to fetch $3 million, but bidding took off and the gavel didn't come down until it hit $28 million, nearly 10 times higher.
The buyer's identity isn't known.
Back in 2005, a man named Terry Martin got the shoes for a steal.
He literally smashed the glass case they were in and stole them from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
They were recovered in 2018.
Martin believed they were covered in diamonds, but it turned out the material was just glass.
Martin was sentenced for the theft last year.
Thanks again to the active -duty Osterlo family of Newport, Rhode Island, who sponsored our quiz today and described Kid News as a point of continuity across four duty stations in three different countries.
