Good morning and welcome to Kid News, I'm Tori.
Today is Friday, November 8, 2024.
And we begin with President Biden putting a punctuation mark on the election.
The outgoing Commander -in -Chief made his first remarks to the nation yesterday, following his party's loss on Tuesday.
Mr. Biden said he'd congratulated President -Elect Trump on his victory, pledged to do his part to ensure a smooth and peaceful transition, and praised Vice President Harris for character and her campaign.
Mr. Biden also reminded Americans that, in a democracy, the will of the people always prevails.
You can't love your country only when you win, and you can't love your neighbor only when you agree.
Mr. Biden's term ends when President -Elect Trump is sworn in on January 20.
A surprise visitor dropped in on travelers at LaGuardia Airport in New York City.
Video shot earlier this week shows a rogue raccoon clinging mid -air to a cable after tumbling through a ceiling tile in Terminal A.
The furry critter then dropped to the floor, made a mad dash around the boarding gate, and sent passengers scrambling.
The mischief maker kept things lively for about five minutes before airport staff guided it safely outside.
Officials confirm no one was injured, and they're now working with animal experts to keep wildlife in the wild.
It's almost a certainty that this year will be the hottest in recorded history.
Unless there's a big reversal in November and December, new data from climate scientists shows 2024 will cross a critical milestone set by the 2015 Paris Agreement.
This year, they say, could be the first that's 1 .5 degrees Celsius, or 2 .7 degrees Fahrenheit, hotter than it was during the 1850 to 1900 pre -industrial period.
That's when humans began burning fossil fuels on an industrial scale.
Even fractions of temperature increases are enough to fuel extreme weather, like hurricanes.
The topic will be front and center Monday when heads of state from nearly 200 countries gather at the annual climate conference known as COP -29 in Azerbaijan.
At one NBA arena, fans don't just watch the game, they're part of it.
Home to the Los Angeles Clippers, the new 2 billion Intuit Dome is taking engagement to a whole new level.
Each of the nearly 18 ,000 seats is equipped with an Xbox -like controller, enabling fans to join live scoreboard games.
A 51 -row section called The Wall, reserved for die -hard fans who must pass a test to enter, is designed with elevated handrails to encourage fans to stand and cheer.
Unlike many sports venues, pop music rather than play -by -play is piped into restrooms to encourage fans to get back to the action.
And to keep things moving, literally and figuratively, the arena has supersized its bathroom facilities.
There's no place like an auction.
Nearly 20 years after being stolen, Dorothy's iconic ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz are up for sale.
As we previously reported on Kid News, these famous shoes were swiped from the Judy Garland Museum in 2005 with only a single red sequin left behind as a clue.
According to USA Today, a mobster named Terry John Martin confessed he'd stolen them, hoping they'd fetch a handsome price because he mistakenly believed the sequins were actually rubies.
Now safely returned to their owner, the slippers have already attracted a top bid of $812 ,000 with online bidding open until December 7.
Also up for grabs, a hat worn by the Wicked Witch of the West and a screen door from Dorothy's Kansas home.

In our Kid News Kicker, with Thanksgiving less than three weeks away, Campbell's has released its third annual State of the Sides report listing diners' favorite holiday side dishes.
In a culinary upset this year, stuffing has overtaken mashed potatoes as the top choice in 45 states, with sweet potatoes, green bean casserole and mac and cheese rounding out the top five.
The report also reveals that for the third year in a row, a majority of Americans prefer eating side dishes over turkey, which is traditionally the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving meal.
Before we go, shoutouts for our terrific Kid News teachers, Mrs.
