Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Kim. Today is Thursday, September 26, 2024.
And we begin with bottom of the ninth drama and an unprecedented outcome in Major League Baseball.
On Tuesday night, the San Diego Padres became the first team in MLB history to clinch a playoff spot with a game -ending triple play.
With no outs, runners on first and second, and newly minted 50 -50 sluggers Shohei Ohtani on deck, Dodger Miguel Rojas grounded to Padres third baseman Manny Machado, who started a rocket fire around the horn triple play.
As San Diego manager Mike Shilt told reporters after the game, you couldn't script that any better.
According to ESPN, it was only the third triple play to end a game in the past 30 years and the first time the Padres have made the playoffs since the COVID shortened season in 2020.
Hurricane Helene is now just hours from arrival in Florida.
At the time of this recording, AccuWeather forecasters ramped up their warnings, predicting the storm could make landfall tonight as a catastrophic category four with winds of 130 to 156 miles per hour.
Experts say the worst of Helene could be a storm surge, reaching 20 feet in some places.
In preparation, millions of coastal residents were urged to evacuate.
The airport in Tampa planned to close at 2 a .m.
this morning until further notice, and even north in Atlanta, Georgia, baseball execs postponed last night's and tonight's Mets Braves games until Monday.
Other states also have cause for concern.
According to USA Today, Helene could undergo what's called a Fuji -Wara interaction with another storm over the Ozarks in Arkansas, which happens very rarely when two storms combine, then rotate around a common center.
That means heavy rains could linger across portions of the Mid -South and Ohio Valley for several days.
Coca -Cola's new permanent flavor has gone flat.
The soda company says it's pulling its new spiced cola just months after it hit the shelves, despite billing it as a new permanent product.
Coca -Cola did not give a specific reason for the decision, but CNN reports it may have been due to lackluster sales and confusion about the flavor, as it wasn't actually spicy.
Spiced was launched in February as a blend of traditional Coke with hints of raspberry.
The hope was that it would attract Gen Z buyers who were turning to drinks with punchier flavors like Olipop and Poppy.
Two summits in two weeks in New York City and they couldn't be more different.
World leaders are gathering at the United Nations General Assembly this week to address global challenges.
More than 130 leaders, including President Biden and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, are speaking on issues ranging from climate change to health to international conflicts.
Mr. Biden gave his final U .N.
address Tuesday. According to NBC News, he touched on his decision to withdraw from the U .S.
presidential race, but focused much more of his speech on conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Across town, conflict of another kind was the focus of the first -ever national urban rat summit.
Mayor Eric Adams hosted the event last week and, according to CBS, invited a rat pack of health officials and pest control experts from around the country to discuss ways to win the city's war on rats.
Let's figure out how we unify against what I consider to be public enemy number one, Mickey and his crew, Adams said.
As we reported here on Kid News, rats are a major problem in the Big Apple, even prompting the city to appoint a rat czar to come up with a strategy to send the rodents packing.
Still ahead, ghost hunting and supernatural sleuthing at a library near you.

In today's Kid News Kicker, want to be a ghost buster?
Now's your chance. Libraries across the country are getting into the spooky spirit of Halloween by loaning out ghost hunting kits that include everything you need to carry out your own paranormal investigation.
According to the Washington Post, a kit may include electromagnetic field meters, infrared thermometers, UV black flashlights, spirit boxes to scan radio frequencies and instructions on how to operate all of the above.
Kits can be checked out for a week at a time at many public libraries from Oregon to Ohio.
And while there's no guarantee you'll track down a ghost, librarians say the kits are so popular they are literally disappearing from the shelves.
Before we go, shout outs for our teachers.
