Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Kim.
Today is Tuesday, February 24th, 2026.
And we begin with a time-honored tradition in the nation's capital.
Tonight at nine o'clock Eastern time, President Trump will stand before the U.S.
Congress and television cameras, to deliver his first State of the Union of his second term in office.
We'll be right back.
Mr Trump has extended invitations to the speech to both the US men's and women's gold medal winning hockey teams.
Yesterday, the women's team politely declined, citing prior commitments.
As of this recording, it's not known if the men's team will attend.
Historic, epic monster all among the adjectives being used to describe the blizzard bomb that blasted the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states yesterday.
Millions of residents from D.C. to Boston are now digging out.
Rhode Island was particularly hard hit, with many towns near Providence buried under 30 inches.
Dozens of other locations in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey got two feet, while Central Park saw 20 inches.
Enough for New York City Mayor Mamdani to suggest it could go down as one of the city's top 10 storms over the past 150 years.
At the height of the blizzard, as many as 600000 people were without power and the outages could linger.
But travel bans are now being lifted and most schools are back in session this morning.
Airline travel is also recovering, but carriers still canceled some 2000 flights headed out of or into the Northeast today.
Lindsey Vonn is now out of the hospital and revealing just how badly her leg was injured in that downhill crash two weeks ago.
In an Instagram post, the skier credits an orthopedic surgeon who travels with her and Team USA for operating quickly and basically saving her from amputation.
In addition to a complex tibial fracture in her left leg, she had several other breaks, including to her right ankle.
But the biggest threat was from compartment syndrome, which she says happens when there's so much trauma to one area that blood pools get stuck and crushes everything.
Lindsay says she's on the mend but bedbound for another few weeks before getting on crutches.
Full healing could take a year.
In other Kid News notes today marks the four-year anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
The conflict has gone on far longer than most people predicted, and there's still no concrete end in sight.
Peace talks are ongoing but stalled.
The main obstacle remains Russia's demand that Ukraine give up the territory that Russia now occupies, which Ukraine refuses to do.
Some positive news from the Amazon.
Satellite images and government figures from Brazil show deforestation is on pace to hit a record low this year.
Deforestation is the large-scale clearing of forests for timber farming or other uses, without allowing the trees to grow back.
The Amazon rainforest is needed to absorb the carbon that increases global temperatures.
But according to NOAA, 17% of it has been lost since 1970.
Still to come.
Olympic gold may be sweet, but figure skater Alyssa Liu has something almost as sweet waiting for her back home.
But first we want to wish a happy early birthday to an awesome son and brother, Jeh Sunga of Dorado, Puerto Rico.
Jeh, your mom, dad and brother.
Arman, who just had a birthday last week, loves seeing you hit a winner on the court.
Whip up gourmet food in the kitchen and build masterpieces out of Legos.
They hope tomorrow is the best day ever, and so do we.
