Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
You and me every day.
Come on! Let's master English!
Hello everybody, welcome back to Daily EZ English expression.
Apple's best podcast of 2014.
Yeah, thank you very much. Now today's expression is awesome.
I've got some thank yous at the end, please listen up for those.
Today's expression is corny.
That guy is corny. That was a corny joke.
You're so corny. Now, the word corny is actually a nice word if you ask me, but some people like to describe corny as stupid.
But it's not stupid.
Corny actually means simple and clean and well kind of childish.
I guess that's possible.
So simple, clean, childish, that's basically the definition of corny but many people would also include perhaps stupid or dumb or not so funny.
But that's not true.
I don't think so. But anyway, I guess you should know that so the perfect usage is a corny joke a corny joke So let me tell you some corny jokes listen carefully Why is there a gate around?
cemeteries Because people are dying to get in If you ask me, that's pretty funny.
I think most people would say, oh, that's dumb, that's stupid.
Oh, man, that's so corny.
I liked it though. I think it's funny.
I'll give you another one here.
Why did the poor man, P O O R?
Why did the poor man sell yeast?
why EAST why did the poor man sell yeast he wanted to raise some dough I think most Americans probably would laugh once and then say oh man that was so stupid now now actually for you for ESL students it might not be funny because you don't understand but these jokes are funny, they're just really simple for Americans, they're puns.
We're playing with words so raise some dough, well that's the function of yeast, Y -E -A -S -T.
Look in the dictionary and you'll see that the usage of yeast is to make bread and you take flour, eggs and water and mix it together.
and then you add yeast and it gets really big.
That is raising dough but another definition of to raise some dough means to make some money.
So why did the poor man sell yeast to make some money?
But that's not funny to raise some dough, that also means to make some money but it is a little bit corny.
Yeah, I thought it was great.
Let's go to the other one.
Why is there a gate around?
Cemeteries a cemetery when people die people are buried in a cemetery Why is there a gate?
Why is there offense around the cemetery?
You know, why why is there offense?
That's a good question the answer because people are dying to get in So who is allowed into a cemetery of course dead people But the expression people are dying to get in people really really really want to get inside So everybody wants to go there so they made a gate Yeah It's a corny joke actually if you watch my videos most of my jokes are very corny Some of them are very clever, but some of them are very simple very silly a little bit childish But they're clean and they're nice they're perfect jokes for little kids But when you're older, especially a teenager or in your 20s They like different
jokes but me I like corny jokes.
They're perfect check out today's dialogue Hey, why do seagulls fly over the sea?
Ummm... to look for food?
No, because if they flew over a bay, they'd be called bagels.
Ugh... that's so corny.
Oh, I love that joke.
Yeah. Seagulls. S -E -A -G -U -L -L.
Seagull. Those are the birds by the ocean.
seagulls why do they fly over the sea well they're seagulls if they flew over a bay ba why what's a bay is San Francisco's in a bay check your dictionary ba why it's it's where land and the ocean meet but it kind of goes into the land the ocean kind of goes into the land and comes out so if the Seagulls are flying over a bay.
They're not seagulls they're bay gulls.
Get it? Sea -gulls flying over the sea.
Bay -gulls flying over the bay.
But when we say bagel in America, we actually hear B -A -G -E -L -S and a bagel is a type of bread.
It looks like a donut.
oh boy I worry this lesson this this podcast might actually be very corny yeah I hope you understand let's listen to the dialogue two more times thanks a lot guys hey why do seagulls fly over the sea to look for food now No, because if they flew over a bay they'd be called bagels.
Ugh, that's so corny.
Hey, why do seagulls fly over the sea?
To look for food? No, because if they flew over a bay they'd be called bagels.
That's so corny! How did this podcast get chosen as the best of 2014?
It's so corny I don't know, I don't know.
But thank you. Once again thank you so much. It really is everybody if you didn't hear the news Apple!
Yes Apple chose this podcast as the best of 2014 in Germany, France, Austria, and Brazil.
What an honor. Thank you so much. Thanks to Apple, but mostly thanks to you guys for listening.
Okay, and I need another thank you here.
These are my new patrons.
If it wasn't for you guys, I couldn't be here, okay, and I'll tell you something.
What does it mean to be a patron?
P -A -T -R -O -N. And it means basically to sponsor to support somebody, in this case me.
Okay, so I have many people who are supporting me.
And how do they support me?
They support me by donating or investing a dollar, a dollar or more a month.
So if you're investing a dollar, that's what three and a half cents a day.
And at the end of the month, actually at the beginning of each month, that dollar comes to me.
Not all of it. You know, there are service charges and taxes and things like that basically 70 75 cents comes to me and so those dollars come to me and what do I do well, I pay for my bills and I'm like a normal American.
I have lots of bills.
I'm like a normal person, you know I've got my rent and my electricity my water and everything.
I also have my computers and and my microphone and my video camera and there's a lot of software and monthly maintenance fees.
The internet, of course, $100 a month on internet alone.
I need a high -speed internet.
So there's lots of expenses.
And finally, I signed up for Obamacare.
Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, oh my goodness.
It's so expensive. I was very surprised.
I signed up yesterday and I nearly fainted at the cost. So you guys are helping me with these expenses.
You're keeping me alive.
You're keeping me here to do this.
And there are so many things that you have asked me to do and I want to do.
We've got vocabulary lessons, grammar lessons.
People wanna focus on only phrasal verbs.
I think these are great ideas.
more pronunciation classes, yes.
I wanna do all of these classes for you for free, but I need your help, I need your support.
I cannot do it alone, I need an engineer to help me edit the videos and edit the audio, that's a full time job.
I need hopefully better equipment, better studio, you can, sometimes you can hear my cats, you can hear the cars go by, for some people that's okay, But for lots of people, it's not okay.
But anyway If it weren't for you guys my patrons, it would be very difficult for me to be here So I need a special thanks here to a couple of you I may have mentioned some of these names before but it doesn't hurt to say thank you again The first one p e j s a no pay Sano pay Sano. I think that's how you pronounce it.
