A series here on Anything Goes where I analyze clothing trends and decide if they are trendy or timeless.
Trendy meaning this trend is cute for now, but in a month, we'll all hate it.
In timeless meaning, this trend is having a moment right now, but it'll always be cool.
Today we're doing something a little different though because I usually analyze current clothing trends, trends that are happening right now, but today we're getting in a time machine.
Close your eyes unless you're driving while you listen to this.
Close your eyes and imagine you're in a time machine.
The walls are all shiny, metal.
There's buttons everywhere.
You're in a time machine, okay?
Imagine. Now imagine there's a knob and when you turn it, it goes forward in time or back in time.
Now imagine your hand going onto that knob and turning it back to 2010.
Now imagine your finger shifting left a bit and pressing the go button.
Imagine the universe whirling around you and imagine that you land back in 2010.
Do you feel like you're there now?
Do you feel like you've arrived?
Good because we're gonna be existing in 2010 for the next 20 minutes to an hour, okay?
Depending on how long this episode is.
We're gonna be looking at 2010's fashion today.
And I think majority of us would agree that 2010's fashion was a catastrophe.
In research for this episode, I was looking up various pop culture images from the 2010s, more specifically pop culture fashion images from the 2010s.
I cannot believe that we all left the house like this and I know that I'm not presenting you with any groundbreaking news here.
I think we've all collectively chosen to forget what we wore in 2010.
Like none of us are proud of what we were wearing in that era.
However, we must not forget that the stuff that's trendy now was trendy before, right?
That's how trends work.
It happens in cycles. And we have a tendency to recreate things, sort of reinvent things.
But a lot of times the trends that we get excited about in the moment are actually recycled trends.
Trends that have already been popular in the past.
Maybe not in our lifetime, but in the past.
And with that in mind, we can't ignore the possibility that 2010's fashion might come back into style.
That's something that scares me.
That's something that scares all of us, right?
None of us are excited about that.
But as I just said, a lot of times when trends come back, they're reinvented in a way.
And so today what I wanna do is discuss various 2010's trends and try to analyze them objectively, right?
Like, okay, objectively, does this have the possibility of being timeless?
This individual trend, right?
Like, it's one thing to look at an entire outfit from 2010.
It's another thing to look at the individual trends that built 2010's outfits and analyze those individual pieces.
Like, do I think people are gonna be wearing 2010's outfits exact in say 10 years and calling it cool?
I doubt it. I think people are gonna take bits and pieces from the 2010's at some point and bring it back.
So what I wanna do today is analyze individual trends.
Like, I know it's hard to imagine that any piece that we wore in the 2010's has any kind of value long-term.
I know it's hard to imagine because we all look back at those outfits in cringe.
But I think with an open mind, we can all maybe see some of the beautiful trends that were happening in the 2010's.
And we can maybe imagine a world where they come back into style.
I don't know if we really wanna do that, but we might as well try for fun.
Okay, let's get into it.
Trendy or timeless 2010's edition.
Let's start out with Galaxy Print.
I don't really remember if Galaxy Print was ever cool.
Like, I'm trying to remember.
I feel like it wasn't cool, but it was sort of cool.
I feel like people... It was cool in an intentionally dorky way.
Do you know what I mean? It wasn't like super badass to be wearing Galaxy Print, but it also wasn't embarrassing, I don't think.
Well, it also kind of goes into, spoiler alert, another 2010's trend, which was basically like cosplaying being a nerd.
You know, like wearing nerd glasses, like big chunky glasses with like a white piece of tape around it.
There was sort of this nerds are cool trend, which honestly, I actually really like, but we're not there yet.
But I think that that mindset is what allowed the Galaxy Print to happen, right?
Like it's hard to fathom that anyone ever bought like Galaxy Print leggings or like a Galaxy Print backpack, but it did happen.
And to be honest, I do think that it's trendy.
I have a really hard time imagining Galaxy Print ever coming back.
And to be honest, I feel that way about most of the patterns that were happening during the 2010's.
Like I think of Galaxy Print, but I also think of Chevron.
Remember, you know, like the zigzag lines pattern, Chevron print, I have a really hard time imagining that that'll ever be a trend again.
Like it, no, also mustaches on everything, like mustache print, like again, like a pair of leggings with mustaches all over it, a hat with a mustache on it.
I do believe that all of those patterns and prints are staying in the 2010's.
I never see those coming back.
However, I could possibly see them coming back in a way that's almost unrecognizable.
Like instead of Galaxy Print, maybe stars, like star print comes back in a really strong way.
I mean, that's not really Galaxy though.
I was gonna say, like I guess the reimagined version of Galaxy would be maybe a bunch of stars, but that's actually a completely different pattern.
I don't think Galaxy Print, mustaches or Chevron are ever coming back.
I mean, not only are they all possibly the most hideous patterns I've ever seen in my life, but also I don't know, like I can't find any redeeming qualities at all.
Like stripes for example, stripes to me are timeless.
You can do so many different things with stripes and it never gets old.
What makes it timeless is that you can do a stripe a million different ways and it can feel different every time.
I would even say the same thing about polka dots or stars.
Like I think polka dots or stars can be done in a trillion different ways.
That is what makes those patterns timeless.
Whereas Galaxy or Chevron or mustaches, it's so specific and it's not cute.
So it's just like, I don't see it ever coming back.
So I think those are all very much trendy.
And that does lead us to our next 2010s trend, which is nerds are cool, right?
Wearing nerdy stuff. And by nerdy, I mean stereotypically nerdy stuff, right?
Like big chunky glasses with the tape around the bridge of the nose, suspenders, pulling your socks up, wearing that with like high waters, nerd core.
Honestly, that was very trendy.
I think that the way it was executed in the 2010s was far too costuming.
Like I remember it being very costuming, almost like Halloween vibes.
But I think there are elements of that that are definitely timeless.
For example, like big chunky glasses with the tape around the center.
I actually wanna do that.
Like I wanna take a pair of my glasses and put tape around the bridge of the nose.
Like I actually really fuck with that.
And I think it's really cool.
I think pairing those glasses, sort of the stereotypical nerd glasses with like an otherwise sort of, I don't know, maybe trendy outfit, I think that could be kind of cool.
I also think things like suspenders are fun.
And I actually do think that they are timeless.
You know, it definitely depends on the styling, right?
Like how are they styled?
Like if you're wearing suspenders with your pants, fucking pull up your ass, like that's not timeless.
That's not cute, but suspenders as an accessory, like I actually think that they're timeless.
I mean, I think it's something that's hard to do right.
But I think when done right, they're timeless.
I think like a high sock pulled up with a high water.
Like I think that can be timeless too.
Like I think the elements separate from each other are actually somewhat timeless.
I think put all together is not, you know what I mean?
Then it becomes like a costume.
It's like we're dressing up like a nerd from a high school rom-com movie, you know what I mean?
But what I do appreciate about the sort of nerd trend is that I actually do think that it's cool to take inspiration from people who are not usually looked at for inspiration.
And stereotypically like the nerd archetype, right?
Is not maybe considered when it comes to like trend inspiration.
And I'm of the belief that we should take inspiration from fucking everyone.
So I'm actually like, I think the sort of nerd aesthetic nerd core is kind of timeless.
I think there's a lot of timeless elements there.
And I think the sentiment of it is really good to pull inspiration from everyone and anyone.
Okay, next we have skinny jeans.
I go back and forth on skinny jeans to be honest.
I really do because there's a lot about them that make them not feel timeless to me.
You know what I mean? I think the discomfort that one experiences when wearing them makes it harder for them to be timeless.
Like when things are physically uncomfortable, I don't know, makes them harder to be timeless.
And there's obviously exceptions.
Like, I don't know, like corsets.
You know, corseting is something that is sort of timeless in a way.
I can't remember a time where like corsets have not been in in one way or another.
And corsets are not comfortable, but like, I don't know, skinny jeans.
They're so uncomfortable.
They, I think that they're objectively ugly.
Like trends aside, everything is, I actually just think that they're ugly.
I would say nine out of 10 times.
I see a skinny jean, I think that is ugly.
But there is that one out of 10 times where I'm like, honestly, those kind of look cool.
Like the way that it's styled, the way that it was put together, like it's actually kind of an interesting vibe.
I'm into it. So I'm gonna go ahead and say that skinny jeans are trendy.
I don't think that they're timeless.
Oh, fuck, but I'm conflicted.
Cause like, I actually do think that skinny jeans at any given moment, if styled in a cool way, could possibly work.
But because it's so hard to do, and I so rarely see it, and I have no interest in doing it myself.
And it's just so like, there's so many variables that need to go a certain way for it to work, that I'm gonna go ahead and say that they're trendy.
Do I think that they're gonna come back into style?
I actually do. I do. Do I think they're gonna look the exact same?
Like the low-waisted skinny jean, maybe not.
But I do think skinny jeans might come back in.
But I think that they'll always be a fleeting trend.
Like I think they'll always come in for a second and then leave again.
Like I don't think they'll ever be something that like people keep in their closet for 30 years and consistently wear.
Like I think it's too hard to do it in a timeless way, even though it's possible.
So I think that they're just trendy.
And from there, we must address jeggings, jean leggings.
These are a fucking catastrophe.
I get it, they're a more comfortable version of the skinny jean.
I don't care. They look so cheap and bad, and they're just, I fucking hate them.
I cannot imagine a world where they even come back into style.
Like they might, they genuinely might, but I think that they are such a catastrophe that I think that they're done forever.
And I think they're obviously trendy.
Like those were obviously a trend.
And there's so much a trend that I think that they might not even ever come back into style.
They're that bad. Like that is a glitch in the matrix.
Like that should have never happened.
It's a major human mistake.
You know what I mean? It's as humans, we've made a fuck ton of mistakes.
And one of them is the jegging, trendy, a catastrophe.
And I hope that they never come back.
A skinny jean is different.
I really, it is different.
Skinny jeans actually have a bit of potential.
I do think that they're ugly, but they actually have a little bit of potential.
The way that they fit, the fact that they're made using a classic material, denim.
The way that they look on, it is a bit more elevated.
You know, I don't know. I could see a skinny jean coming back, but a jegging will never come back.
And moving down the line, we must address leggings.
Because leggings, especially like patterned leggings, like fun, crazy leggings, that was absolutely happening in the 2010s.
People were dressing them up too, like wearing, you know, like a legging with like a little wedge heel and like a little flowy top that were the shoulder cutouts or just absolutely allowing the shoulder to have its moment.
And pair it with a long statement necklace and you have a fucking fit.
I actually do think in a weird way.
And I'm shocked that I'm saying this because I'm shocked that I'm saying this because I just said that jeggings are like a catastrophe.
And, you know, they're a major human mistake.
And I said, I made all of these very, very, very intense claims.
I actually do think, this is gonna be controversial, that leggings might be timeless.
But what's interesting about them is that they're somewhat new.
Not really, not really.
Because I feel like when I think of like the jazzer size era, like I don't know, was that the 80s or whatever, athleisure, athletic clothing was sort of in, like wearing the legging and like the body suit and like the, you know, the headband, the sweatband and the sweat wristbands and the, you know, slouchy socks and all this, like leggings have been in the past in one
way or another. I actually think that they're timeless.
I think the way that we were wearing them in the 2010s was an absolute catastrophe and it was hideous.
But I think leggings as a standalone trend are actually timeless.
And I think that they're timeless when they're styled in a more elevated way.
And again, I know you have to really use your imagination here because it sounds like I'm absolutely talking nonsense.
But I've seen some really cool outfits with leggings that have worked.
Like, you know, okay, a good example would be like wearing, let's say a black legging, maybe like a shiny sort of material, a shiny legging with a knee-high, like black boot, okay?
And a little black turtleneck and like a little puffy, like black leather jacket or something like that.
That's kind of cute to me.
Like I'm into that. Or like a Capri legging with like a little ballet flat in a sock and like a little white tank top.
Is that sort of trendy enough of the now?
Both of those outfits, yes.
But the thing is, they've sort of stood the test of time if you think about it.
Like, again, you go back to like the 80s and the sort of athletic, jazzer-size-y vibe was trendy at the time.
And like, the legging has continued to reinvent itself over the years.
And that to me makes it feel kind of timeless.
And listen, I don't wear leggings a lot, right?
But they're kind of a useful piece to have in your closet.
Like, I don't know. Like they, not only are they comfortable for the most part, but there's a lot of things that you can do with them.
Like you can layer with leggings.
There's a lot of different like textures of leggings that you can buy to do different things.
Like, I don't know. I think leggings might be timeless.
I don't know. I'm shocked I'm saying it, but I'm saying it.
Next we have obviously the Ugg Boot.
Now, spoiler alert, they're back in right now and they have been for a few years.
So it's clear that they didn't, they weren't just a one-hit wonder, okay?
They're not just a one-hit wonder, like the Galaxy print, like the mustaches, like the Chevron.
I actually do think a classic Ugg Boot is timeless.
And I don't think I would have said that 10 years ago.
Like when the Ugg Boot first went out of style and people weren't really wearing them anymore, I was like, Ugg Boots are hideous.
I can't believe I ever wore those.
But then I warmed up to them again and I warmed up specifically to the classic Ugg Boot.
Okay, I'm talking about the Ugg Boot that's like the natural ankle length, like not the super high ones that go up to the knee and not the super short ones that like cut off right at the ankle bone, but the middle ground ones that don't have a platform that aren't in any crazy colors, but like the classic neutral tone Ugg Boot, the classic Ugg Boot I actually do think is timeless.
Any other Ugg Boot, the ones with the platform ones, the ones with the bows on the back, or the ones with the buttons up the side, those are trendy to me.
I don't think that those have the power to stay relevant, but I think the classic short little Ugg Boot, I actually do think that those are timeless.
And I think the reason for that is, number one, they actually do sort of serve a purpose, right?
Like they're a warm boot and they're incredibly comfortable.
And so, obviously the Ugg Boot originated in surf.
I think they originated, the story is, I guess they started in Australia and they were for surfers.
If I'm, I am not Googling it, okay, fine, I'll Google it.
By the early 1970s, Ugg Boots became popular among competitive surfers in Australia.
So again, they like have served a purpose, right?
Like they're a classic boot.
Actually, it's not like this is a new thing.
And obviously in the 2010s, especially, they were being worn for fashion purposes, but I actually can say from experience that Ugg Boots are genuinely a good functional boot.
And people might disagree with me on this, but I've spent quite a few winters on the East Coast, not like the whole winter, but like a few weeks at a time.
And I brought my Ugg Boots.
And I was wearing, because obviously I'm a fucking California girl who doesn't have any functional winter clothing.
And so I was like, I guess I'll pack my Ugg Boots.
So I packed my Ugg Boots, expecting them to become destroyed.
And, you know, but I was like, this is all I have.
And they were amazing, you know?
Like I was wearing them around in the snow.
I was like wearing them around the house.
They were super warm and they're honestly great boots, you know, like they're actually a good quality boot.
So with that being said, I think the Ugg Boot is timeless because it actually serves a purpose.
But also if you really look at the Ugg Boot, the simple classic Ugg Boot for what it is, it's neither ugly nor cute.
It's a very functional shoe.
And I love styling an Ugg Boot in a cute way.
Like a fashionable sort of simple way.
There's a way to do it. I'm fully team Ugg Boot.
Okay, next we have fringe in general.
I remember very specifically like fringe bags, like imagine like a brown big sort of shoulder bag with like fringe on it, sort of like a suede material or like fringe boots, like a flat sort of boot that maybe goes up to right below the knee, maybe sometimes more of a mid calf with fringe on it, like fringe, okay?
This was very in in the 2010s.
I actually don't remember ever really getting into it.
I actually don't think I ever liked it even back then.
This I can see coming back again.
Does that mean that it's timeless?
You know what? I actually do think like leather fringe is kind of timeless.
I actually do think it is.
And I'm not saying I like it.
I'm not saying I'm rushing to go out and buy it, but I think that there's always a way to make it work.
And I actually do think it's timeless.
I can see it coming back in a big way at some point where it becomes like a major trend again.
So that's why I say like I could see it coming back in a big way.
Like two things can be true at once, okay?
Like something can be timeless, but it can also become a big trend again.
Like I feel like things that are timeless just are things that you can always pull off at any given moment, no matter what's happening in the zeitgeist, like there's always a way to make it work, right?
Like to me, a timeless piece is something that you buy when it's trendy because everyone's talking about it, but then even when it's not trendy anymore, you can still pull it off.
Like you could still make it work.
And I do feel that way about fringe.
Again, I don't really like it, but I kind of think it's timeless.
But I do see it coming back in a big way at some point.
Like fringe and skinny jeans, I could see those two things coming back at the same time.
And it's gonna be scary.
And we're all gonna be afraid, but as with all trends, at first we hate them and then suddenly we like them and then suddenly we hate them again.
But yeah, like I think that there's always a way to style fringe.
I don't know. Next, slouchy boots.
This was something I kept seeing over and over and over again when I was doing research on 2010's fashion, like this slouchy, flat sort of boot, right?
That like goes up to the knee.
I kind of think that they're ugly to be honest, but I also think that they're timeless.
I actually do think that they're kind of timeless.
Like when I'm testing something in my head, trying to figure out if it's timeless, what I'm imagining is like, could I put together an outfit right now with this piece or with this trend?
And could I make it work?
Like, and when I say could I make it work, I mean, would I be okay with wearing it in public?
To be honest, I could see a slouchy boot working.
I could see it working. Like, okay, let me give you an example.
Maybe I wear a slouchy boot with like a long skirt that goes down to the knee, and then I'm wearing like a cute little button down in a cute little bag that's the same color as the boot.
Like I can see it working.
I could see it working. Again, am I rushing out to the store, like frantically trying to find a slouchy boot?
No, fuck no. But I could totally see it working.
So I think a slouchy boot might just be timeless.
I don't know, I don't know.
I'm feeling crazy right now, but I don't know.
Next, wedge sneakers. These already came back in.
Like we're seeing these in stores now.
You know what I mean? And I'm not talking about thrift stores where we're seeing everybody's donated wedge sneakers from 2010.
I'm talking about new wedge sneakers are being manufactured today in kind of a significant way.
I absolutely hate these.
I fucking hate them. Like I'm so sorry.
And again, if you love them, don't listen to me.
This is just my opinion, okay?
Wear your wedge sneakers with pride.
I personally despise them, and I do not think that they're timeless.
I think that they had a moment in 2010.
I think that there's for some odd reason having a moment again now, but they are not timeless.
They are so weird. I hate them.
And the reason why I don't think that they're timeless is because they've never been broadly accepted.
Like every time they've come back into the zeitgeist and maybe it started in 2010s, I don't know if the wedge sneaker existed prior to the 2010s, I doubt it maybe, but I doubt it.
Since their inception, I imagine in the 2010s, they've come back once.
And both times they have been trendy, they have been incredibly polarizing.
And I think anything that's that polarizing cannot be timeless, because if something is so vehemently hated, how can they possibly be timeless?
Like even the people who go out and buy them end up hating them like, I don't know, six months later, like they're just not, the way that they come in and out of style is so like explosive and then disappear, right?
That to me, my gut says, this is simply just a trend.
I mean, it is impressive that they came back.
I'm shocked. And that should not be ignored, but I don't think they have that timeless quality.
I just don't think that they do.
Next, we have neon colors.
Another thing that I hate.
You know, I think some would argue like any color is timeless, right?
Because it's like, we only have so many fucking colors in the rainbow, right?
So how can a color be trendy?
Or how can like a genre of color be trendy?
But I think neon colors are trendy.
Like they're very rarely in style and people become so fatigued by neon so quickly.
Like, I don't know, I feel like neon was kind of back in for a second recently, like within the last few years.
Like I was seeing a lot of designer brands on the runway, like doing like neon pink or like neon yellow pieces.
I don't think it's timeless at all.
I think pretty much any other sort of color.
Like I think pastels are timeless.
I think jewel tones are timeless.
You know, pastels and jewel tones come in and out in significant ways, but like, I think neon is always gonna be a trend.
I think it's very similar to, you know, the wedge sneaker.
It's like neon colors are always very polarizing and it's always sort of split 50-50.
Like half people like it, half people hate it and they come in in such an explosive way and then they leave the zeitgeist in such an explosive way that it's like, I don't know, I just think it's only ever gonna be a trend.
Next we have sparkles. When I was, again, doing research for this, I just kept seeing rhinestones.
It was like rhinestones on fucking everything.
Rhinestones, sequins, bedazzling things.
I do think that sparkles are, no.
No, I was about to say that they're timeless.
Ah, I'm conflicted. Fuck, I'm conflicted.
Okay, I'm conflicted because I think that like, when it comes to like sparkly things, it's like so broad and so I'm imagining like, you know, a fully bedazzled dress that's like so beautiful and I do think that there are some things that are sparkly, that are timeless, but then I think of like the rhinestones and the sequins and I'm like, that comes in and out every
few years and like, ugh, I hate rhinestones and I hate sequins for the most part.
I feel like they always look sort of cheap and costuming.
Like, okay, let's talk about this for a second.
Let's look at two pairs of jeans.
Let's look at a pair of classic 501s, Levi's jeans, classic, right?
Those are obviously timeless.
Those will never go out of style.
It's like one of the most obvious timeless pieces of clothing that exists, right?
Now let's imagine a pair of Levi's 501s with a bunch of sequins on it or with a bunch of rhinestones on it.
Suddenly now, those Levi's 501s, the most timeless piece of clothing that we have as human beings, the Levi's 501s, now suddenly those are trendy because they have a bunch of rhinestones on them.
Do you see what I'm saying?
So I actually do think because of that example, that example to me is so potent that I'm gonna go ahead and say sparkles are trendy.
They're loud, they're such a statement that I think that they take away the timelessness of whatever piece that they're applied to.
Do I think that there's a time and a place for sparkles?
Yes, like on a beautiful gown.
Like I actually do think sparkle is timeless on like a beautiful gown, but that's about it.
That's about it. I think when it comes to like day-to-day style, what we're wearing on a day-to-day basis, it's trendy and it never stands the test of time.
And I honestly think it's smarter when it comes to like investing in pieces for your wardrobe to buy things that do not have sparkles on them that are not rhinestone because I think it's smarter to accessorize with jewelry or blah, blah, blah.
It's smarter to invest in like simple pieces and then dress them up with accessories that are sparkly or whatever.
Then you know what I'm saying?
I don't know. Okay, next we have statement jewelry.
But I'm talking about 2010's statement jewelry.
So let me describe to you what that looked like if you forgot.
I'm talking about long necklaces that have like a bedazzled owl pendant on them or like earrings that have like a bunch of sequins.
They're like the big like circular sort of earring with like sequins and like tassels coming off and all this, oh my God, no, no.
I hate this style of jewelry, hate.
And I do not think it's timeless.
I think it is, to me, when I think of timeless jewelry, I think of simple, you know, simple metals.
I think of like stuff that's more versatile.
I think the only jewelry that's timeless is stuff that people have been wearing for hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years.
Like anything with like a history to it, I think when it comes to jewelry, I think is, now I guess you could argue though that the trendy 2010's jewelry does have, it did take reference from jewelry of the past, but the way that it was sort of modernized made it so loud and like, oh, I hate, I hated the jewelry of the 2010's.
And to be honest, I think I hated it even back then, but I think simple jewelry will always be the winner.
Like even current trendy jewelry, right?
Like those rubber like rings, like all those like clay rubber rings that are, you know, cute, like those are so cute.
And I love those to this day, but like those are also trendy.
Those are already sort of on their way out.
Like there's, I don't know.
I think big statement jewelry, I think for the most part it's trendy.
I think the other reason for that too, is that jewelry is usually very expensive, right?
And obviously like you can go and buy cheap jewelry.
Like there's cheap jewelry everywhere.
I think the jewelry that actually lasts for a lifetime is not cheap, right?
And I think that how can jewelry be timeless?
Okay, okay, hear me out.
How can jewelry be timeless if it's a statement to a point where you can only wear it with a few outfits?
That type of jewelry has to be bought cheap, right?
Like it's not feasible for majority of people to have, you know, a bunch of different statement necklaces for a bunch of different possible outfits in their closet.
Like what makes more sense is to have a few key pieces of higher quality jewelry that you can wear every single day in the shower with everything.
Like that makes more sense.
Cheap jewelry does not last.
By nature it does not last.
It starts to turn colors.
It starts to, you know, we've all had a piece of jewelry from like Forever 21 that like turned our neck like green or whatever.
You know what I'm saying?
By nature that jewelry is not timeless because it's made poorly.
So it just disintegrates, you know what I'm saying?
Like I think by nature, trendy jewelry cannot be timeless because you kind of have to have a lot of it to participate in the trend and, you know, have different ones to match different outfits.
And all of those pieces will disintegrate within a year.
Timeless jewelry is a simple pair of hoops that you can wear every single day.
Like a simple little chain necklace that you can wear every day with a little sentimental charm on it.

Okay, next we have big shoulder cutouts.
Again, I saw this so much like tops with like a slouchy neck and like big shoulder cutouts.
I mean, I think cutouts in general are timeless, right?
Like there's so much that can be done with a cutout that it's like impossible to say.
You can't say it's trendy or timeless because it's such a broad sort of thing.
But I think when it comes to like this slouchy top with the shoulder cutouts, honestly, to me, and I hope that you know what I'm talking about, I think that that's not only trendy, but also something that will not come back into style.
It's so ugly, they're so hideous.
I'm being so mean this episode, but like I wore this shit too, so don't worry.
I'm shitting on myself here.
So we're all in this together.
I think that that is, it was like such a specific style of top that got so popular.
And it's really hard to sort of reinvent that specific sort of top style of top.
I just don't see it ever coming back.
It's not flattering, it's just not cute.
So I, listen, I'm gonna say it's trendy.
I'm gonna say it's a trend only of the past.
I'm gonna say that will never come back into style either.
Like I think it was such a trend that it's actually died in the 2010s.
Next we have unique t-shirt layering.
There was a lot of unique layering happening during the 2010s, which I actually thought was really kind of cool.
And I think that any type of unique layering is timeless.
And I think it's a great way for anyone to take the things in their closet and sort of reinvent them.
And I'm all about creative, cool, interesting, weird layering.
I'm all about it. I actually think it was cute back then and it's cute now, wearing a long sleeve shirt under like a cute little t-shirt or getting a bit more inventive and wearing like a mesh long sleeve under like a tang top.
Like I think all of that is cool.
I'm all about that. I think it was cool then.
I think it's been cool ever since.
I think there's so much possibility with it.
I actually love it and I think it's timeless.
Next we have high, low, okay?
Shorten the front, long in the back.
Now this existed in the form of shirts and skirts.
We had high, low happening everywhere.
I do think that the concept of high, low is timeless.
Oh, I don't know. I'm having a hard time with this one because I, fuck, no, you know what?
No, it's trendy. It's not timeless.
It's not because listen, there's a rare occasion where like a designer makes a really cool high, low skirt and it's such a cool, interesting piece that it's timeless.
But that's so rare. You know what I'm saying?
That's so rare and same thing with a high, low shirt.
Like, yeah, can a designer maybe create like a really interesting version of a high, low and it's like, it's cool.
Yeah, I think that there's ways to do it that is timeless.
But again, it's so rare that I think it is ultimately trendy.
I personally really don't like it.
I think it's very ugly. I could see it coming back in.
I could see it coming back in in a reinvented way.
I don't see it coming back in in the way that we were wearing it in the 2010s, but I could see it coming back in.
Oh, wow, really not cute.
I'm not excited for that one.
Next, we have knee-high sandals in sneakers.
Okay, think back to like the knee-high sandals.
Okay, the sandal that went all the way up to the knee.
Think about sneakers. Like a converse that goes all the way up to the knee.
Think about like a Doc Martin that goes all the way up to the knee.
Very 2010s. I think this is trendy.
And I think the only timeless sort of like knee-high shoe that exists is a boot for the most part.
Other than that, I think knee-high is tough to do with any other sort of shoe.
Do I think that this is a trend that will come back though?
Yes, but I think it will also exit the zeitgeist just as quickly as it came in.
I think it's very rare that a knee-high shoe that is not a boot works from a timeless perspective, but I really do feel strongly that this is a trend that could come back.
And I actually feel like it kind of did come back.
Like I feel like I started to see people wearing like the knee-high Doc Martens and stuff.
I'm not into it, to be honest, but I could see it coming back at some point, but I think it will ultimately leave again just as quickly as it came.
And so I think it is just simply a trend.
But I think it's a trend that has the potential to come back.
Next, we have infinity scarves.
Okay, listen, when I see photos of myself wearing infinity scarves, I'm mortified, right?
However, I do think the concept of an infinity scarf is actually genius.
The fact that it's like already, like that you can just wrap it around your neck and it just stays put is kind of a delight, to be honest.
Like when you're wearing a scarf for like a fully utilitarian purpose, like you're just wearing it to stay warm, having it stay put and just be connected around your neck, like is very efficient.
And for that reason, I'm gonna say infinity scarves are timeless because I think that there's such a well-designed thing, thinking about how it was styled in the 2010s aside.
Like if you actually just look at the infinity scarf and look at what it is, it's actually a great idea.
And I think because of that, it's timeless.
I think when it comes to styling it in a fashionable way, I think an infinity scarf, depending on the material and the way that it fits, can easily be timeless as long as it's made with a classic knit, right?
And the color scheme is sort of neutral or timeless.
Like I think infinity scarves are timeless.
Sorry. Okay, next we have the hair feather.
Do we remember the hair feather?
There's also hair tinsel.
Actually, let's do both of those.
Hair feathers, hair tinsels, little hair accessories like that.
I think hair accessories like that, that only last for like what, a month max?
And inevitably are trendy.
Like how many times can you go back into the salon and get another hair feather put in, or get more hair tinsel put in before you're like, all right, I don't wanna do this anymore.
I'm sick of it and it's not even that cute and it doesn't match every outfit and I'm over it, right?
Like it doesn't have legs in that way because the upkeep is just too annoying.
Most people are not gonna upkeep that for very long.
So because of that, I think it's trendy.
But then on top of that, I think aesthetically, it's trendy as well.
Like I don't think, actually, no.
I think both hair tinsel and hair feathers are too much of a statement to be timeless.
Like I think the feather is more timeless than the tinsel.
I think the tinsel is like, no, that has absolutely no legs.
But the feather, I think actually can look kinda cool.
And I think, actually I think the feather probably could be worn at any given moment and it looked cool and whatever.
But I just, I think the upkeep is what makes it impossible to be timeless.
But I think if we were to compare the hair feather to the hair tinsel, I think the hair feather has a more classic, more understated, more versatile look than the hair tinsel.
So I think the hair feather is definitely more timeless.
But I think neither of them can be because it's too much upkeep.
I mean, I guess you could also say that about like getting your hair colored, but it's different.
It's different because the amount of work to the reward, I don't know.
But I guess some would argue it's like going and getting your nails done.
Okay, that's actually a good point.
See, I'm like debating myself on it.
I don't know, I don't know.
It's too stylized, I think, to be timeless.
And last but not least, we have the side part.
No, the side part to me is not timeless.
It actually, well, I think the side part is timeless when it comes to like getting dressed up.
Okay, like let's say you're getting dressed up and you're gonna go to a wedding or you're gonna go to a party or something and you're in a dress or it's time for prom.
Or like, you know, when you're getting really dolled up, I think that a side part can be timeless because you can take reference from classic hairstyles from the past that are more dolled up in a way.
And in that way, I think it can be timeless.
It's sort of similar to that idea of like sparkles, right?
Like sparkles, I think are timeless when they're being worn in a dolled up sort of way, like to a wedding, to prom, to an event.
You know, in black tie circumstances, I think a side part in sparkles are timeless.
But I think in any other scenario, like day to day life and stuff, the side part in sequence, it is not timeless at all.
I think it comes and goes every few years.
But I recently did a side part.
I think I did a side part for an event and it was honestly cute.
I was like, I'm into it. Like, you know, am I gonna do this every day?
No, but like I'm all dressed up and the side part makes sense and it looks cool.
You know, I'm into it and that's it.
I'm so curious to see what 2010's trends end up coming back.
I feel like in the next 10, 15, maybe 20 years, we'll see these things resurge and it's gonna be fascinating.
Like we might even be watching our kids or our nieces and nephews or, you know, or just the kids in our life.
We might end up watching the kids in our lives enjoy these trends again when we're old and gray and it's gonna be very interesting to see what happens.
But I think that we're all far too traumatized to do it ourselves again.
You know what? You never know though, because it's crazy like how trends can come back in and we just, we grow to like them again.
Even though we never thought we would.
It's so fascinating. But anyway, now I invite you to step back in to your time machine.

You're stepping back into your time machine and you're reprogramming the machine to take you back to 2024.
