Welcome back to the English with Neil podcast.
The topic of today's episode is the laptop lifestyle.
So in this episode, I'm going to be covering what is the laptop lifestyle?
How can someone start living a laptop lifestyle, what are the pros and cons?
And at the end, I'll give you my final thoughts about the laptop lifestyle.
But before we start, I just want to say thank you to all of my listeners around the world.
Thank you for your support.
Let's talk about the laptop lifestyle.
What is that exactly?
Well, the laptop lifestyle is the ability to live and work from anywhere in the world simply using your laptop, and to live this laptop lifestyle.
You basically only need two things.
Number one, you need a laptop.
And number two, you need an internet connection.
And that's it.
That sounds kind of appealing.
That sounds kind of cool, right?
You're able to live and work from anywhere in the world and you only need two things.
That sounds pretty cool.
So when I think about the laptop lifestyle, I think this lifestyle appeals to three types of people.
There may be more, but three types of people come to mind.
Someone who loves to travel, right?
You can take your laptop with you anywhere in the world and you're able to work anywhere in the world.
So number one, someone who likes to travel.
Number two, someone who really enjoys freedom.
Someone who enjoys freedom does not like to get up every day drive, take the train, take the bus and go to work.
It's kind of boring.
It gets old after a while.
So if you enjoy freedom, the laptop lifestyle may be appealing to you.
Another person is someone who is called an introvert.
An introvert is someone who is just comfortable or likes to be by themselves.
They don't need a lot of people around to work, so this type of lifestyle may be appealing to those three types of people.
Okay, Now let's talk about the types of laptop lifestyle, because there are two types.
Number one is someone who is a remote worker.
A remote worker is basically someone who is working from home.
Due to the pandemic, a lot of people became uh, laptop lifestyle workers, not by choice, but because they were forced to from their company.
So if you are doing remote work, you are employed by a company, You are an employee of a company and you know usually work from home.
You obviously can work from other locations, but primarily you work from home.
That's called a remote worker.
Another type of person is called a digital nomad.
Now, that is kind of the complete opposite of a remote worker.
A digital nomad is someone who doesn't work from one location.
They work from multiple locations.
They can work one day in a cafe in their own city the next day.
They can travel across town and work over there.
And then they can take a flight to Italy and work in Italy for a couple months and then go fly over to Bali.
So they're all over the place.
They really live and work from anywhere in the world.
And that's called a digital nomad.
OK, now the other type of person is an entrepreneur, a freelance worker.
An entrepreneur is basically someone who owns their own business.
And if you are able to sell products and services through the Internet.
You can also live the laptop lifestyle because you are your own boss.
And you know you have the ability to connect and to communicate with your customers, no matter where you are.
You don't have to be in one location.
And, you know.
So entrepreneurs and freelance workers can also live the laptop lifestyle.
OK, so next I want to get into the pros and cons.
So pros basically means the good points.
Cons are the bad points or the challenges of the laptop lifestyle.
So first the pro obviously you have the freedom to live and work from anywhere in the world.
And number two, sometimes you can set, So for some people this might be great.
You have the freedom.
You don't have to really answer to anyone.
You can create your own schedule and go and work where you like, when you like.
So some people have the option to do that.
Now the cons, because there are good points and, of course, there are some challenges, some bad points.
Number one you have to be very disciplined with your time and if you're a digital nomad traveling to and from different countries.
You have to learn how to work around different time zones, because you may be working, let's say, from Indonesia, but you have to deliver a project to someone in the US.
So you have to be very mindful of the time zones.
Okay, so that may be kind of tricky or kind of challenging for some people.
And the next thing is heavy travel may get A little draining.
If you, If you've ever been on a plane, You know how draining it can be.
You know Taking long Flights And then taking long You know These It gets kind of draining.
So That's another con about living the laptop lifestyle.
And in closing, I just want to share some thoughts about the laptop lifestyle.
I personally love the idea of the laptop lifestyle.
I know someone.
Who's a designer, who's from Japan, but because she primarily works with her laptop, she was able to go to Australia for a little bit and work in Australia and enjoy Australia.
Then come back to Japan.
But, you know, she was still able to work.
And so she's an example of someone who is living the laptop lifestyle.
So I personally, I like the idea of it.
Like I said, there are some cons, but you know it, doesn't?
You just have to figure out the type of lifestyle you want to live.
You may enjoy doing remote work, but sometimes you want to travel a little bit.
And I think it's great.
Especially if you are, like I said, able to sell products and services via the internet.
I think it's...
I think it's a very freeing and rewarding experience to be able to enjoy life like that.
So I'm a proponent.
I'm a big proponent of the laptop lifestyle.
But what do you think?
And I'm curious to know if you are living the laptop lifestyle right now.
Please leave a comment and write about your experience so other people can read it and maybe reach out to you and contact you about living the laptop life.
So maybe you guys can share information because, like I said, I think with the, with technology, I think it's great that we're able to do this before technology.
With my father and grandparents.
They didn't have the freedom to live and work anywhere that they'd like.
But now, in 2022 and probably before that, we're able to do that.
So it's a very free and rewarding thing.
But let me know.
Let's talk about it.
What do you think about the laptop lifestyle?
