Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane, and welcome to Easy English Expressions.

Hello everybody, welcome back to Daily Easy English Expression.
So two days ago we studied smooth sailing.
Yesterday we studied the opposite.
What was that expression?
Very good. On the rocks.
How was your relationship?
Everything is smooth sailing.
How is your relationship?
Ah, it's on the rocks.
Very very good expressions.
But there is another definition of on the rocks.
And that is today's expression.
I was lucky tonight.
I went to my parents' house for dinner.
And I don't know why, but my dad was in a really good mood.
And when my dad is very happy, he offers me a little tiny glass of whiskey.
It's very expensive whiskey.
My dad rarely drinks whiskey, only when he's feeling especially good.
And he offered me some tonight.
And he said, do you want it straight or on the rocks?
and I was thinking, oh my god that's perfect because that is what I'm going to do for today's expression.
It was yesterday's expression and it's also today's expression.
If you order whiskey or any other kind of alcohol, even Coca Cola, it's possible at a bar and you have it on the rocks, it means with ice.
So if you go to McDonald's and you say hello, I'd like a Coca -Cola on the rocks They might not understand you it sounds really goofy on the rocks is used with alcohol but Hopefully every under every American would understand that expression in any situation And it's funny when I was a kid.
I used to ask my mom for seven up on the rocks I thought it was cool.
Yes, I liked my soda with ice Let's check out the dialogue Whiskey on the rocks, please and for you coke on the rocks.
We don't say that we just say with ice Yeah once again, you can say coke on the rocks and probably the bartender or the waiter would understand you but it goes with whiskey and not just whiskey it could be tequila beer on the rocks that sounds terrible wine on the rocks sucree bleau that would be probably not that good vodka on the rocks definitely so I know many of you do not drink alcohol okay There are several young people or maybe your religion, or you just don't like alcohol, Well, yeah, you might not use this expression.
However, if you're watching an American movie or an American television program, a very good chance that you will hear this expression.
And now you know. So if somebody orders a whiskey on the rocks, that means they want their whiskey with some ice.
ice. If they order their whiskey straight, that means they want their whiskey with no ice.
You got it? Let's check out that dialog two more times.
I'll say that we just say with ice.
