Ever since the 1960s, the minimalist movement has been captivating art and interior design enthusiasts.
It's all about simplicity, emphasizing a return to the essentials and encouraging us to let go of our attachment to material things as far as possible.
If you tend to struggle with clutter in your home environment, the 12-12-12 method may just be able to help you counter that problem.
It was created by Joshua Becker of Becoming Minimalist and it's really gained a lot of attention online since, with many people saying it helped them transform their home into a more harmonious space.
It's a structured, accessible approach that can help you feel as comfortable in your mind as you are in your home.
What does the 12-12-12 part stand for then?
To restore order in your home, you want to identify three categories of items Firstly, things to throw away, removing whatever is unnecessary or broken.
Secondly, things to donate so others can benefit from items you no longer need.
And thirdly, things to put back where they belong.
Helping you regain control, And you guessed it, the 12-12-12 method involves selecting 12 items from each category, helping to shift your focus from struggling to clean up to giving items a second life.
What if I'm not organized enough to manage something like that?
Well, Joshua Becker suggests taking it one room at a time.
And if you don't feel able to tackle it all in one day, that's also fine.
Just tidy up a little each day.
This focused method will still help you see results quickly, motivating you for the rest of the rooms.
Enlisting help from a friend or family member can be helpful too.
They can give you a second opinion on what you actually need in your home.
There are plenty more practical tips on the Becoming Minimalist website, which we recommend you check out.
For example, three sorting bins can make organizing easier, using one for each goal items to throw away, items to put back in place and items to donate.
You could even replace the donation goal with reselling, if you're motivated by earning a little extra money.
Well beyond simply reducing clutter.
The approach is geared towards reconnecting you with what truly matters.
You could also treat it as an invitation to question your consumption habits, which is really the first step towards minimalist living.
