Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everyone, you're listening to the Easy English Expressions, the podcast.
Welcome back everybody.
Today's expression is so good.
Do you listen to my Let's Master English podcast?
I hope you do.
Every Monday I publish... like a 30, 40 minute long podcast.
And we talk about the news and I give funny stories and advice, celebrity birthdays.
And it's just a fun podcast.
And if you're a member, actually, we include music.
So it's like a radio show.
Anyway, in my Let's Master English podcast, We have a guest, and it's actually my cousin.
And the funny thing is my cousin's name is also Shane.
So I'm Coach Shane, and my cousin's name is – well, we just call him Country Shane.
Country Shane.
He's a country boy.
And he always uses –
The word that we have in today's expression.
I want you to listen to the dialogue and see if you can get it.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
Y'all coming to the party?
Me?
I'll be home with the family.
Oh, y'all.
Come on.
Great food.
Well, why not?
We'll be there.
Oh, that sounds so nice.
So the first guy is having a party.
Maybe it's like a barbecue, you know, hamburgers and steaks and hot dogs and chicken and some beer and soda, maybe some ice cream.
So he says to the other guy, he says, are you coming to the party?
But wait a minute.
He did not say, are you coming to the party?
He said, y'all.
Y, apostrophe, A-L-L.
Y'all coming to the party?
Y'all.
What does y'all mean?
Well, it actually means you all.
You all coming to the party?
Horrible grammar, but it's what we say.
Grammatically, we should say, are all of you coming to the party?
But this is where it gets confusing.
Sometimes y'all, means all of you and sometimes it just means you yeah i know even though like y'all all means everyone sometimes it just means you y'all okay are you okay y'all okay are you okay Y'all have a good time on your vacation?
Did you all, did everyone have a good time on their vacation?
Ooh, yeah.
We call this country grammar, country grammar.
And country grammar can be very difficult, confusing to understand.
Another good word you might know is ain't.
Have you heard the word ain't?
Yeah, that's also country grammar.
And y'all, you're going to hear it.
You'll hear it a lot.
You'll hear it in songs.
You'll hear it in podcasts, on TV shows, and in movies.
And again, if you listen to my Let's Master English podcast, you will hear country Shane using it too.
So again, the first sentence, y'all coming to the party?
Remember, y'all could mean you or it could mean everyone.
So the guy asked the question and the other guy says, me?
Are you talking about me?
Well, I will be home with the family.
So the other guy emphasizes all y'all.
All y'all.
Every one of you.
Not just you.
You and your family.
All y'all.
All y'all.
All y'all.
All y'all.
Come on.
Great food.
Oh, I want to go.
The guy finally says, well, why not?
Sure, we'll be there.
It sounds great.
Nobody invites me to parties.
Well, that's my fault.
I don't know anybody, and I don't go out.
I just stay home, just me and my family.
My son, Mikey, he invites me to parties, his parties.
His parties are usually with dinosaurs, but it's fun.
What about y'all?
What about you?
Have you been to a party recently?
Maybe a barbecue?
Do you intend on going to a party anytime soon?
Are you going to go by yourself or are all y'all going to go?
Is everyone going to go?
Let me know.
I would love to hear from you.
So if you're listening on Spotify, I can see everybody's comment.
It's really cool.
So especially to the Spotify listeners, if you're listening, say hi.
Just say, hi, Shane.
Come to my party.
But tell me, oh, yeah, this is good.
This is the question.
If you're on Spotify, leave an answer to this question.
My favorite party food is what?
And just write whatever you like to eat.
All right, guys, that's it.
I want you to check out the dialogue two more times.
Don't forget, look for the Let's Master English podcast, too.
It's great.
And together, let's master English.
