Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English!
Hello everybody, welcome back to daily easy English expression, the Bud guess, number 1,131.
Got a great expression today, it comes from baseball, if you know about baseball, the idea is you gotta hit the ball and then you have to run around the bases, there's a first base, a second base, a third base and home, home plate.
So if you can make it all the way around, then you get one point.
Now that's the basic idea, you don't really have to need, you don't really need to know that, but what you do need to know is first base is the first step, it's not enough.
Second base is better, third base is good, but you gotta go all the way home.
So step one, first base, step two, second base, step three, third base, step four, go home.
But that's what you need to know.
In America, we have so many idioms related to baseball, but they actually are used in situations outside of baseball, like today's expression, which is first base.
Ooh, this is gonna be interesting.
I got the dialogue and then of course, I'll explain everything.
How was your weekend? I had a date.
Tell, wow, you sound really pleased.
I made it to first base, finally, I'm 40.
Oh my goodness. Wow. How was your weekend?
I had a date, wow, you sound really pleased, you sound really happy, really excited.
And the guy says, I made it to first base, finally, I'm 40, I'm 40 years old and I finally made it to first base.
Congratulations, that's great.
That's good for him. What does that mean?
It means on his date, he kissed the girl.
Oh yeah, that's what it means.
If you get to first base, you kissed the girl on your date.
It doesn't have to be the first date, but you kissed the girl.
Kissing the girl, ladies kissing the guy, that's first base.
I got to first base. What's second base?
Well, I don't want to explain too much, but second base would be maybe the clothes are on wearing clothes, but maybe you kind of touched her breast or maybe her butt, but you're wearing clothes.
Third base, maybe, I don't know, a little skin contact.
Even if you make it home, you better be married, you might have children.
Seriously, this is what we say.
Now is this an expression that adults use?
Yeah, we do, especially as a joke, but kids use it kind of more seriously when you're a teenager or something.
How old were you? Don't tell me, but I'll ask anyway, how old were you when you made it to first base?
Yeah, I'm not going to tell you anything about me, but there you go.
First base, kissing. Second base, maybe touching on top, clothes on, probably.
Third base, maybe skin to skin, touching anywhere.
Of course, a home run, you had better be married.
So there you go, now you know a little bit more about baseball and about dating.
