So this is a great opportunity for you to get serious about mastering English with me and of course save some money too.
So that's a really great opportunity for you.
Now let's get to today's expression.
It is off the bat. Right off the bat.
Off the bat. So if you know about baseball, the basic object is some guy throws the ball really fast.
And another guy tries to hit the ball.
Okay. That's basically what happens.
The guy who hits the ball, what does he use?
Like in tennis, you use a tennis racket.
In badminton, you use a badminton racket.
But in baseball, we use a baseball bat or simply a bat.
So the expression off the bat comes from baseball, but it means immediately without thinking.
That's the idiom. So in baseball, the pitcher throws the ball really fast and the ball hits the bat and boom, immediately boom.
And then daily English, you give me a question and boom, I give you an answer without thinking too much, without thinking at all.
Immediately I give you an answer.
That's what off the bat means.
Check out the dialogue.
Who's your favorite singer?
Well right off the bat, I would have to say Celine Dion.
Really? Come on. Near far wherever you are, I believe that the heart does go on.
Ah, sorry about that. Yeah.
The guy asked me, who is your favorite singer?
And my answer, well right off the bat, without thinking, my immediate answer is Celine Dion.
Really coach Shane, you like Celine Dion?
And then of course I start singing and I know you were singing to near far wherever you are.
No, yeah, that's really bad.
I'm really sorry. I'm sorry.
Ah, but this is the idea of off the bat, especially we say right off the bat.
This is an excellent expression.
So who is your favorite singer?
Right off the bat, who do you think of?
What is your favorite food?
Right off the bat, what do you think of?
Who is your favorite English coach?
Right off the bat, you better say me.
If you don't say me, I'm going to cry.
Now I know. I know you like me.
So once again, there are lots of baseball related expressions right now in America.
Baseball season is very hot.
Everybody's enjoying baseball.
What's your favorite baseball team?
For me right off the bat, I would say the Boston Red Sox, but actually I don't know really any of the players, but I do like baseball.
I need to watch baseball.
I like baseball. Why don't I watch baseball?
I'll tell you why because I don't have time.
I'm so busy. But you know what?
Anyway, that's life, right?
So that is it for this expression until the next episode.
