Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Tori. Today is Thursday, November 7, 2024.
And we begin with Vice President Kamala Harris gracious in defeat and gracefully moving on.
She called President -elect Trump yesterday afternoon to congratulate him privately and a few hours later made her first public comments from her alma mater Howard University in Washington, D .C.
She told her young Democratic supporters that it's okay to be sad and disappointed, but they must accept the results.
President Biden is also expected to address the loss in a speech later today.
Interestingly, the outcome of yesterday's election was historic, but the turnout was not.
So far, it's pulling up a few points shy of the record of 67 % set in 2020.
When Mr. Trump is sworn in on January 20, 2025, he'll be starting his second term and is constitutionally prevented from seeking a third.
That means bets are already being placed on who will run in 2028.
At this point, the favorite is Vice President -elect J .D.
Vance, followed by Michelle Obama and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Not everyone is happy with the results of yesterday's election, but the U .S.
stock market sure is.
The Dow Jones soared 1 ,500 points yesterday to hit a new record high.
Why? Because companies and investors believe President -elect Trump will be good for business and good for the economy.
Also, markets don't like uncertainty.
Talk that this race would be close and might not be decided for days did not materialize.
The wind was decisive, and the stock market blasted off accordingly.
Emperor penguins live in the cold of Antarctica, so when one turns up thousands of miles away, in Australia, it's a big deal.
Ocean Beach, where it waddled ashore, is more than 2 ,000 miles north of its icy home.
According to CNN, it's the first time an emperor has been seen so far north.
A researcher at the University of Western Australia told ABC News that the penguin may have followed a current in search of food, then got caught in it.
Local surfer Aaron Fowler says he was there when the penguin popped out of the water and strolled onto the beach.
It tried to do a slide on his belly, thinking the sand was snow, I guess, face -planted, stood up again, and shook it all off.
The penguin is malnourished from its journey, and now being nursed back to health.
Emperor penguins are the biggest of all penguins.
They can weigh up to 88 pounds and stand more than 3 feet tall.
It's late in the hurricane season, but Raphael is proof it's not over yet.
The storm walloped Cuba late yesterday as a Category 3, with winds topping 100 miles an hour.
Where it heads next is unclear.
It could make a beeline from Mexico or land somewhere along the U .S.
Gulf Coast. We'll know more about its direction and timing today.
According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Raphael is the strongest hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean in November since 2009.
In other Kid News notes, Santa may have trouble getting one of the most popular gifts of the holiday season down the chimney.
CNN is reporting that supersized TVs are flying off the shelves.
We're not talking about the 55 or 60 -inch sets that have been popular recently.
These are 97 inches or more diagonally.
That's more than 8 feet, bigger than a king -sized bed.
Best Buy is trying to cash in on the demand.
It says it's adding extra -extra large sets to 70 % of its stores nationwide.
Lake Como in a Can?
You can now buy the famously fresh breeze 13 ounces at a time.
The tourist destination in Italy is popular with vacationers, home to celebrities like George and Amal Clooney, and the location for movies including Casino Royale and House of Gucci.
The marketing exec behind the idea says the air isn't a product, it's a memory.
Still, the memory isn't free.
It'll cost about $11 US per can.
The idea isn't new.
A different company has been selling air from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland since 2020, and another is pitching the breeze from Iceland.
Still to come, how kids in one Michigan neighborhood save Halloween for a hospitalized stranger.
But first, today's Kid News quiz.

That it's okay to be sad and disappointed but they must accept the results.
The Dow Jones, which is part of the stock market, soared how many points in the aftermath of the election?
About 1 ,500 points to a new high.
An emperor penguin recently swam thousands of miles from where to where?
Antarctica to Australia.
Canned air from what tourist destination is now for sale?
Lake Como, Italy. In our Kid News kicker, we're well past Halloween at this point, but there's a story we can't pass up.
A family in Woodhaven, Michigan is wowed by the reaction of their neighborhood.
Amy Schmidt and her son Jacob loved to decorate, dress up, and distribute a boatload of candy.
But this year, Jacob landed in a hospital just two days before trick -or -treating.
Amy left an apology note on her door saying she was sorry there was no candy, and why.
And that was all the ghosts and goblins needed to see.
Instead of bemoaning the house with no treats, kid after kid left some of their own.
According to WXYZ TV, trick -or -treaters like Mia took a second lap so Jacob could come home to candy.
It's just amazing what these parents have raised their kids to be, said Amy.
To do that without your parents there is remarkable.
