Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to Easy English Expressions, the bloodcast.
Number 191. Today everybody, we're going to study a phrasal verb and I'm going to give you two variations, drift away and drift off.
DRIFT away, AWAY or OFF OF F.
Now I want you guys to explain to me why we used the word drift.
Anyway, I'll explain after the dialogue.
Drift away drift off means to fall asleep.
Yes, fall asleep. But if you look in the dictionary and you look up the word drift, how does that relate to sleep?
Like I said, I'll explain after you check out the dialogue.
As soon as I sat down, I drifted away.
You always drift off in church.
No, I'm praying. Right, with your mouth open.
Does that happen to you?
If you go to church or maybe at the library or in school or maybe in a car, hopefully not when you're driving, you do not want to drift away.
You do not want to drift off.
That means to fall asleep.
So drift, the idea of drift is, imagine a lake or an ocean.
And on the ocean, on top of the water is a tree branch or maybe a coconut or maybe a basketball.
Okay? And that basketball or coconut or tree bench stays on top of the water, but it goes up and down.
It's kind of like it's moving with the water.
It's going up and down, moving with the water.
This is the idea to drift.
Okay? When you're starting to feel tired, but you're sitting.
What happens to your head?
Your head starts to go. Your eyes start to close and then your head goes down and then it comes back up because you have to wake up.
Oh, got to wake up. But then your eyes get heavy and you start to go to sleep and your head goes down.
And then you come back up.
You come back up. It's just like your like a basketball on the ocean.
Up and down with the waves.
This is the idea to drift.
Okay? Your head. Your head is drifting away.
Now when we say away, it's like you're going someplace else.
Bye bye. You're sleeping.
You're falling asleep.
Drifting off is the same thing.
Off. And the idea is off.
And this case, off actually means to go far away.
So in American English, we can say, I'm off, meaning I'm going.
And that's the idea here.
Drifting off means you're going to sleep.
Okay? So when you're at school or when you're at the office or when you're in church, be honest.
Do you drift off? Do you drift away sometimes?
Yeah. Sometimes when my wife is talking to me, I drift away.
No, I'm just. I hope she's not hearing this.
I'm being in trouble. But yeah, it happens.
I mean, when you're tired, what can you do, right?
Drift off. Drift away. It is a fantastic phrasal verb.
I want you to use it. All right?
Hopefully you have a good image in your head.
So you remember this expression.
