Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions.
The Budgees.
Tom Coach Shane, how you doing?
Today's expression is number 1555 and it is catch my drift.
Catch my drift.
Alright, it's great expression.
Did you understand what I said?
Catch my drift.
Catch my drift.
Do you understand?
C-A-T-C-H catch like a baseball, a ball you catch, a ball or you catch a cold.
Catch my M-Y drift, D-R-I-F-T.
Now drift can have lots of meanings but in this case basically the wind that is blowing
from me to you.
Do you catch my drift?
This expression means do you understand what I am telling you?
Do you understand what I am saying?
Do you understand what I am telling you?
Catch my drift.
Catch my drift.
But it's not as simple as do you understand.
There is some extra nuance usually.
Let's check out a dialogue.
Aren't these shoes nice?
Yes, very nice.
I'm thinking about buying them as a gift.
Well, they're in the clearance section.
Yeah, the price is so cheap.
They were possible last year if you catch my drift.
Alright, so let's see.
We have two people.
They're in a store and the woman sees some shoes, right?
And the shoes, she likes them.
She thinks they would be a good gift, maybe a birthday gift for somebody.
And they're very cheap.
They're unsailed.
In the clearance section, they're unclarence.
Okay, so these shoes are done.
They're selling them very cheaply.
And the guy agrees.
He says, yeah, they're pretty nice.
They are unclarence, meaning they're very, very, very cheap.
But then he says, in his last sentence, he says, they were possible last year if you catch
my drift.
So if you catch my drift, that means if you understand what I mean.
Okay, but here he's, it's not just, what did he say?
They were possible last year.
What does that mean?
The shoes were possible last year.
Ah, I think I understand.
The shoes were very popular last year.
But this year, they're not popular.
Maybe even they're stupid or they're ugly or the trend is completely finished.
That's probably what he means.
So let's look at the dialogue again.
The woman says, aren't these shoes nice?
Yes, very nice.
I'm thinking about buying them as a gift.
Well, they're in the clearance section.
They are very cheap.
Yeah, the price is so cheap.
And then the guy says, they were possible last year if you catch my drift.
Yes, that is what he means.
These shoes were possible to wear because they were popular.
They were trendy.
These must be some kind of wild shoes, maybe orange or, you know, some really strong color
or something like that, some weird style.
But last year, it was popular.
But this year, nobody's wearing it.
Which is why the shoe is in the clearance section.
So cheap.
So although the shoes may be nice, are they a good gift?
Probably not.
And that's a problem.
Many times, if you see something in the clearance section, it's because it's not popular.
Catch my drift.
So for you, if it's for you, no problem.
If you like it, if you go to the clearance section of a store, and if you don't know
clearance, I did it in podcast 1554.
Clarence is the cheap stuff.
If you go into the clearance section of a store and you see some things that are really
super cheap, but you like it, get it.
You're saving money.
But it's probably not a good place to buy a gift.
Except for my boys.
Yeah, I often go to the clearance section to look for toys for my boys because they don't
care what's popular or what's not popular.
They just like toys, right?
Catch my drift.
Anything is good.
Anything is fine.
Catch my drift.
Do you understand what I mean?
What I mean is anything is fine.
This is a great expression.
Catch my drift.
And once again, catch my drift means, do you understand what I'm saying?
But there's some deeper nuance.
There's some special meaning to whatever you said.
Okay?
Not simply do you understand the words, but do you really understand what I'm saying?
Do you get the nuance?
That's the idea.
Okay?
Catch my drift.
