Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everyone, welcome back to DailyEasyEnglish expression, the podcast.
This is number one thousand fifty two.
Today's expression is by the book.
Yes, by the book.
BY, not BY, BY.
By the book, B-O-OK.
By the book is a great expression and it means following the rules.
I live life by the book.
I follow the rules of life.
When you install a new software on your computer, you should do it by the book.
You should follow the rules.
Don't skip any parts.
Do everything perfectly.
By the rules.
By the book, rather.
And the idea is there's a book somewhere and inside the book it has all the rules.
So if you're a religious person, then your religious book has all the rules for life.
What you should do.
So if you're a Christian, the Bible has the ten commandments.
Those are the rules.
You must follow if you want to go to heaven.
That's the idea.
By the rules.
You have to live your life by the rules.
You need to follow the rules of life.
And then of course there's the law, L-A-W.
And in your country, if you break the law, you could go to jail.
You need to go live by the book.
You need to live according to the rules in the book.
Alright.
So you can apply this to many different types of situations.
But the expression by the book simply means by following the rules.
Okay.
Does that make sense?
Check out a dialogue.
I got an A in English, but I still can't speak.
It's because you go by the book.
You follow the rules too closely.
Yes.
This is such a real situation.
So I have my D-D-M lessons and my perf lessons.
They're great lessons.
You can get the lessons for free at the end of the podcast.
I'll tell you how.
Anyway.
I've got a lot of students whose English is actually really good.
Their grammar is very good.
They have a huge vocabulary.
And their listening also is not that bad.
But they're speaking.
They have no confidence when they're speaking.
Even though their pronunciation is pretty good, they're not confident.
And they're very slow.
They're thinking too much.
They're trying to translate.
They're thinking about the grammar rules.
They're thinking about the correct word to use.
And because of that, their speaking is terrible.
Their English is actually great.
But their speaking is terrible.
And to be honest, people don't want to speak with that person because you have to wait
too long.
The person is thinking too much.
The person is going by the book.
They're trying to remember every rule they ever studied.
Is this an adjective?
Is this an adverb?
What is the best verb to use?
Oh my God.
Is this an F sound or a V sound?
Oh no, now I'm too slow.
Oh, and they get nervous.
And it gets worse and worse and worse.
And they don't speak.
Yeah.
It's really, really, really true.
That's why I develop Perth.
Perth is my speaking class.
It's a class that really does.
It's the only speaking class that works because it teaches you to speak by not going by
the book.
It makes you forget about the rules.
So you can see, because think about it right now, I'm speaking, right?
And as I'm speaking, am I really thinking?
No, it's like coming out the same time.
There's no time to think.
Speaking should be a natural process that you don't really think about.
You just do and say, hey, how you doing?
And you're talking to your mom and your friends.
And it's just a casual process that you don't really think.
You don't go by the book.
You don't go by the rules.
And yeah, so anyway, I'm talking about by the book.
And now I'm talking about Perth because it's a perfect example of students.
It might be you.
You might have this problem too of people who are just going by the rules.
And because they go by the book, they can't speak.
That's true.
Very, very true.
So yeah, so once again, you can get our free lessons, DDM and Perth.
