Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everyone, welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions, the podcast.
Today we have a really nice word.
This about America, the United States and American culture and we have one word that will
take both of those meanings and the word is Americana, Americana, the spelling A and that's
a big A, a capital A, A-M-E-R-I-C-A and A. So it's just America with an A attached
in the pronunciation again, Americana, Americana.
And again Americana means United States America especially and culture, things that are very
American or things that are sometimes unique to America but not necessarily unique to
America.
But something that if you are an American, if you are, if you have a citizenship of the
United States, then these are things that you know and truly understand, something that
is Americana.
Now some of them might be old, right?
There might be some old traditional things that younger people might not know but if you
read lots of books or watch lots of movies, you'll probably recognize things that are Americana.
Let's check out the dialogue.
Baseball hot dogs and apple pie, things that represent Americana, right?
Specifically the US.
Okay, my turn, beer, sausage and leader hosin.
So these two guys are kind of playing a game.
They give three words and you have to kind of guess which country is represented by those
three words.
So baseball, hot dogs and apple pie, hmm, yeah, those three things definitely very popular
in the United States.
So the guy's answer was things that represent Americana and the guy says, right?
Specifically the US.
And then the other guy says, okay, my turn, beer, sausage and leader hosin, leader hosin,
L-E-D-E-R-H-O-S-E-N, leader hosin.
Have you ever heard of leader hosin?
Well, what country does beer, sausage and leader hosin represent?
That would be Germany.
Maybe some people would say Austria or other countries too, but Germany, specifically Germany.
What about sushi, sake and cherry trees, cherry blossoms?
I think the answer is going to be Japan, right?
Yeah, so now I don't know.
In Japan do you have a special word that represents Japan and Japanese culture?
In Germany do you have a special word that represents Germany and German culture?
In the US and America we do have a special word that represents America, the US and American
culture.
And again, that word is Americana.
So if there is a word that has the same type of meaning in your language, let me know
what it is.
I'd love to hear it.
That's it.
We're going to check out the dialogue two more times and then together, let's master
English.
