Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to DailyEasyEnglishExpressions.
The podcast.
This is number one thousand thirty-eight.
Great expression.
Up to speed.
Up, you peak.
Toot, toot, speed.
S-P-E-E-D.
Really easy.
I will bring you up to speed.
Are we up to speed?
I need to be up to speed.
So what does this expression mean?
It means you need the latest, the newest, the freshest information.
So maybe you have had a vacation for a week and now you come back to work and you wonder
what your coworkers are doing.
You can ask them, hey, so what has been going on, what has been happening the past week?
Please bring me up to speed and then they'll give you all the information and then you
are up to speed.
Okay, does this make sense?
Maybe you're a student and maybe you were sick for a couple of days.
So then you go back to school and you want to say to your teacher, oh, I'm sorry, I was
sick, I was absent.
Can you bring me up to speed?
What do I need to study?
What should I prepare?
Can you bring me up to speed and then when the professor or your teacher gives you
all the information, then you are up to speed.
Hey, Shane, you were absent for three days.
Did you talk to the professor?
Are you up to speed?
Yes, I talked to him this morning.
I'm up to speed.
Thank you very much.
That's the idea.
Check out the dialogue and then we have a special announcement from from, yeah, I hope
my pronunciation is right.
Yeah, from Myanmar, he's going to bring us up to speed on what is happening in Myanmar.
It's scary stuff.
Check out the dialogue.
Here you go.
I finished reading the manual.
You're up to speed?
I think so.
Can I try by myself?
My coffee maker is your coffee maker.
Okay, you know what a coffee maker is.
Basically what a coffee maker is, it, you put coffee in the top and then you add water
and the coffee maker boils the water and it drips the water through the coffee grounds
and then you have coffee.
Is a coffee maker difficult to use?
Is it difficult to operate?
No, I don't think so.
I think it's pretty easy.
But anyway, this guy has a coffee maker and his friend wants to use it, but the guy says
you can use it.
But first, you need to be up to speed.
You need to read the manual, the manual, M-A-N-U-A-L, the instructions.
You need to read the instructions on how to operate the coffee maker.
So the guy did, he's up to speed and now he can use his friend's coffee maker.
Does that make sense?
I hope so.
Let me read this letter.
This is a nice letter.
Dear coach, I am a student from Myanmar.
I have been learning English with your podcasts on Google.
I have improved my listening skills because of your podcasts.
Your podcasts are really creative.
I never get bored with learning English because your podcasts give me both pleasure and knowledge.
Now, these days, Myanmar, my country, Myanmar, M-Y-A-N-M-A-R Myanmar is like hell.
But not forever.
Maybe you can come and visit the country when it's nice.
I want to be your tour guide.
But at the moment, my dream is impossible because of the military coup, COUP, military coup.
We, the youths, the young people of Myanmar are feeling hopeless and futurless.
Our future can't be bright under the military dictatorship.
Anyway, I really thank you for the chance to learn English with your podcasts.
Right now, all the universities in Myanmar are closed because of the military coup.
Words are inadequate to express my gratitude.
I will be learning English with your podcasts in the future.
Wow.
First of all, I hope my pronunciation is okay.
Thank you very much for the letter and thank you very much for bringing me and now everybody
else up to speed on what is happening in Myanmar.
And we all hope that things go back to normal, that the military coup finishes, that you
have the freedom to go back to school and study.
So yeah, and I'm very happy.
I'm very, very happy that my lessons, my podcasts are helping you with your English.
So that makes me really happy.
Thank you very much.
Yeah, Min, Yang, and be safe and keep studying English.
Together, let's master English, right?
That's right.
So there's a perfect example.
Yeah, Min, Yang has brought us up to speed on what's happening in Myanmar.
That's the expression.
Check out the dialogue two more times and together, let's master English.
