Yeah.
Any questions?
Today's expression is great.
It is, do not pass go, do not collect $200.
Yeah, it's actually two sentences.
Do not pass PAS go, GEO.
Next sentence, do not collect C-O-L-L-E-C-T $200.
Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
This has become an idiom, but it comes from a very popular board game.
Not a computer game, not a card game, but a board game called Monopoly.
It's a very popular game.
Maybe you've played Monopoly.
The idea, if you go around the board in Monopoly, you are able to collect $200.
Anyway, that's the game.
In real life, when we say do not pass go, do not collect $200, it means you will lose everything.
You get nothing.
You get nothing.
Let me give you a dialogue that will hopefully explain how to use it.
Here we go.
I have a job interview, but it's too expensive to take a taxi.
You can ride the bus, but you have to be there by 7.30 in the morning.
The bus is free?
Yes, but I don't know the schedule.
And if you're even one minute late, too bad.
Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
This guy has a job interview, and he has to go to this business by 7.30 in the morning.
But he doesn't want to spend money on a taxi.
It's expensive.
He can take a bus, but they don't know the bus schedule.
The guy says, if you're even one minute late, if you get there at 7.31, that's too bad.
Too late.
That's too bad.
Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
You lose.
You get nothing.
You will not get the job.
Not even the interview, of course.
That's the idea.
So this is an especially great expression to use when you're warning somebody to not
be late.
Don't be late.
Don't be late for the bus.
Don't be late for the interview.
Don't be late for class.
If you're late, do not pass go, do not collect $200.
You lose.
So I'm guessing that using this expression might be a little bit difficult.
However, you will hear it used, and you might even see it in a newspaper or in a magazine,
something like that.
So it is a great expression.
The expression comes from the fantastic game board game of monopoly.
Have you ever played?
I'm curious.
