Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions, the podcast.
Number 1,012.
That's a lot of podcasts.
Two fantastic expressions, ones of phrase, well they're both actually idioms.
Hmm, really good stuff.
Six words, first word, that's THAT apostrophe S, the THE, way W, A, Y, the THE, cookie.
C, O, K, I, E, crumbles, C, R, U, M, B, L, E, S.
That's the breaks, that's the way the cookie crumbles.
Both of these expressions means too bad.
That's what happens.
Say la vie.
K, S, R, S, R, U, M, you know whatever it is, whatever will be will be, it is what it is.
Nothing you can do.
That's a really, really good expression.
So let me go ahead and give you the dialogue first and then I'm going to talk about that's
the way the cookie crumbles after you check out the dialogue.
Here we go.
We lost to Seattle.
That's the breaks.
Too many injured players.
But Seattle is the worst.
That's the way the cookie crumbles.
So we're talking about sports, right?
So the guy, the first guy, he's really angry.
His team lost to Seattle.
So Seattle is a city in America.
Washington, Seattle, Washington, Seattle, no, Seattle, S, E, A, T, T, L, E, big city in Washington,
the state of Washington, north of California, just south of Canada.
Okay.
Anyway, the Seattle team defeated this guy's team.
This guy who knows maybe he's from New York.
So New York lost to Seattle.
And he's really angry because Seattle is the worst.
It's the worst team.
How can they lose?
But they did.
The other guy first, he says, that's the breaks.
That's too bad.
The reason he says is too many injured players.
Yep.
Yep.
So if you have some really good players, but if they're injured, they can't play.
They're hurt, right?
So if the good players aren't playing, well, then your team is not as good.
And that's what happened.
They lost to Seattle.
And the guy, anyway, the guy says, but Seattle is the worst.
Well, that's the way the cookie crumbles.
Say la vie.
That's life.
That's the way it is.
There's nothing you can do.
This is a really great expression.
That's the way the cookie crumbles means that's too bad.
And this is the idea.
Do you know what a cookie is?
In America, when we say cookie, we especially think of the chocolate chip cookie.
It's a dessert.
It's a snack, right?
It's dough, dough, you, G-H, with chocolate chips.
Or there are many, many, many, many kinds of cookies.
But the point of a cookie is usually they're dry.
Okay.
They're not soft.
They can be soft, but many cookies are dry.
So when you bite into a cookie, some of the pieces of cookie, just the small pieces,
some of them fall to the ground.
And that's terrible because me personally, I love cookies.
And if my wife bakes cookies and she gives me one.
And then I take a bite of the cookie and a piece of the cookie falls to the floor.
If my wife wasn't there, I would eat it.
But my wife is usually watching me with an evil eye.
And she doesn't let me eat it.
And I understand why because she doesn't want my sons, Jimmy and Mikey, to learn that
if food falls onto the floor, you can still eat it.
No, that's not a good thing to teach little boys, right?
But that's what happens.
Cookies break apart.
Now instead of break apart, we have another verb, crumble.
C-R-U-M-B-L-E to crumble.
To crumble means to break, to break into small pieces.
And there's nothing you can do.
You lose it.
It's too bad.
Hey, there's nothing you can do.
And that's the idea.
This team lost.
There's nothing you can do.
The good players were injured.
There's nothing you can do.
It's too bad.
That's the breaks, man.
I'm sorry.
You lost.
Yep.
Actually right now I have this situation.
