Welcome back to podcast and Chill.
I'm Leo, your favorite host.
I think you mean one of their favorite hosts, Leo.
Fine, fine. Joining me, as always, is the amazing Gwen.
Hi, everyone. So...what are we going to talk about today?
Well, first, I've got a question for you.
Oh, here we go. What is it this time, Gwen.
Do you want to get smarter?
Hmm, I don't know. Learning always sounds so… exhausting.
I'd rather be gaming or hanging out with friends.
Now, that's the problem.
What problem? Why is getting smarter always tied to boring stuff like reading a million books or doing math?
Isn't it? But I'm sure lots of people would love ways to get smarter without all the stress if there were any.
That's where we come in.
Today we're talking about fun, easy habits that can actually make you smarter.
Seriously? Now that's my kind of learning.
No stress just smart ideas.
So if you're looking to boost your brainpower without the usual grind… this episode is for you.
Let's cut the chatter and dive right in.
So, Gwen, when do you think we should stop learning?
Honestly Leo, never.
One of my favorite things about life is that learning doesn't end after school or university.
But if we're not in school, what are we supposed to learn?
So many things! Things.
Start with books. Pick up something you've never tried before.
A mystery novel maybe?
Well, I do love a good mystery.
And don't forget about online courses.
There are tons of free classes on everything from photography to coding.
Speaking of online, learning a new language has to be on the list.
You're right. It's great for keeping your brain active and even improving memory.
And let's not overlook creative stuff.
Like learning to play an instrument, or trying your hand at cooking.
Certainly, it's fun, and you're still picking up new skills.
But seriously, how does lifelong learning actually help?
It's great for your brain Leo.
Oh yeah? How so? Well, studies show that things like chess or sudoku can really boost your brain power.
Really? How does that even work?
For example, there is a study from the Journal of Applied Gerontology showed that seniors who regularly did crossword puzzles had better memory and reasoning skills than those who didn't.
So crossword puzzles aren't just Grandma's thing?
They're great for keeping your brain sharp at any age.
And if you're more into tech, there are apps like Lumosity and Peek.
Never heard of those?
They're loaded with games designed to improve memory, focus, and problem -solving.
That sounds super useful.
Totally. Give them a shot and your brain will thank you.
What if I'm not into those brain games?
Then read. Reading news articles, blogs, or even engaging online posts can boost your vocabulary and keep you informed.
Besides learning new things, how else does reading help?
A study in International Psychoderiatrics found that older adults who read regularly had slower rates of cognitive decline.
That's pretty amazing.
So just picking up a book or reading an article every day can make a big difference?
Yes, it's such a simple habit, But, It can really pay off in the long run.
What a powerful habit.
Speaking of powerful habits, there's another one we can't skip.
Oh? What's that? Asking questions.
You mean curiosity?
Yep. Curiosity is like a secret ingredient for learning and getting smarter.
But how does that work?
How does asking questions help if you don't know something to begin with?
When you ask questions, you actively engage with what you're learning.
It opens your mind to new ideas and helps you focus better.
I think I'm starting to get it.
Think of it this way.
When we're curious, we tend to remember more because we're genuinely interested in the answers.
Oh, that's actually convincing.
And there's more. Curiosity also boosts creativity.
A study in the Creativity Research Journal found that curious people are more likely to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions.
So, just asking why...
or how... can help us see things differently and spark new ideas.
That's right, and it doesn't have to be complicated.
You can ask simple questions about the world around you, like, why does the sky change colors at sunset?
Or, how do airplanes stay in the air?
That sounds like such an easy way to get smarter.
Alright Gwen, let's go over some new vocabulary for today.
First, pick up. It means to learn something new or to collect someone or something.
For example, I'm starting to pick up some French by listening to podcasts.
Second, give them a shot.
It means to try something or or give someone a chance.
For example, I'm not sure about the new restaurant but I'll give it a shot.
Third pay off. It means to bring a reward or have a good result.
For example, all that hard work will pay off when you get the promotion.
Fourth, think outside the box.
It means to think creatively or in an unusual way.
For example, to solve this problem we need to think outside the box.
Finally, Come up with.
It means to think of or create an idea, solution, or plan.
For example, we need to come up with a catchy slogan for the campaign.
Wow, what's up? I just bought and financed a car through curve on it in minutes, you the person who agonized for weeks over whether to paint your, well's eggshell or off white bot and I just financed a car in minutes.

Now let's discuss two questions about our topic.
First question is – Why do you think we should keep learning, even after finishing school?
I think it keeps our brains sharp and helps us grow as people.
Plus, there's always something new to discover.
Here is the second question for you.
What's one simple habit we can build to keep learning every day?
Reading, picking up a book, or even browsing an article can teach us so much.
That's true. And you, listeners?
Share your answers in the comment section below.
Getting smarter isn't just about keeping your mind sharp.
You've got to take care of your physical health, too.
Really? Really? Why is that?
Because a study in PNAS found that exercise helps grow new brain cells, which can boost memory and learning.
So I need to hit the gym to stay smart?
Not just the gym. Physical activity in general, like walking, dancing or even yoga, can make a big difference.
But that's not all.
What else? What you eat matters, too.
Alright, what should I be adding to my plate?
Foods like salmon, walnuts, and berries are amazing for your brain!
They're packed with omega -3s and antioxidants, which improve memory and protect your brain as you age.
Got it! Salmon, walnuts, berries… brain food… anything else?
Sleep. Don't underestimate the power of a good nights rest.
It's when your brain recharges and processes everything you've learned.
So if I want my brain to work its best, I've gotta take care of my body too?
Exactly. A healthy body equals a healthy brain.
Don't skip out on it.
What else shouldn't I skip out on?
This might be new to you, but surrounding yourself with smart people.
Really? That's definitely new to me.
Yep. When you connect with positive, knowledgeable people, it pushes you to think better and faster.
I guess the more we exchange ideas, the more our brains grow.
Exactly. And it's not just about hanging out with people who always agree with you, engaging in debates or discussions with those who challenge your views can improve your problem -solving skills and make you more open to new ideas.
So connecting with people who have different perspectives can really help open my eyes.
You've got it. But having people with different opinions definitely challenges our beliefs.
I'm not sure many people like that, though.
True. But if we want to get smarter, it's really important to regularly examine our beliefs and stay open to new ideas.
Why is that? When we challenge our own thinking, our brains become more flexible and adaptable.
It's like a workout for your mind.
That's a valid point.
Plus, studies have shown that people who are open to changing their minds, based on new evidence, tend to make better decisions overall.
That does sound like a great habit to have.
You're right so if you come across new information or evidence that challenges your views don't shy away from it.
Having said that I could go nuts if there's too much info coming at me all the time.
I know right? That's why practicing mindfulness is so important for staying sharp.
You mean like meditation?
Yep, things like Thinking meditation can help reduce stress, improve focus, and really clear up your thinking.
Wow, really? In fact, a study from psychiatry research found that mindfulness meditation actually strengthens brain regions related to focus and learning.
That's impressive. Even something as simple as a few deep breathing exercises can make a big difference.
I guess it helps clear our mind, reduce anxiety, and improve our overall mental health.
Totally. And the best part, it s free, and you can do it anywhere.
So, why not give it a try?
All right, Gwen, let s go over some more vocabulary today.
First, Skip out on.
It means to avoid or not attend something you re expected to.
For example, he skipped out on the meeting because he didn t finish his report.
Second, open one s eyes.
It means to make someone realize or understand something important.
For example, traveling to new places really opened my eyes to different cultures.
Third, come across.
It means to find or encounter something by chance.
For example, I came across an old photo of us while cleaning my room.
Fourth, shy away from.
It means to avoid doing something because of fear or discomfort.
For For example, don't shy away from asking questions if you're confused.
Finally, go nuts. It means to act very irritated, crazy, or enthusiastic.
For example, my sister will go nuts when she finds out I crashed her car.
All right. Gwen, here's a question for you.
Sure, what is it? How does physical health affect our brains?
Great question. Exercise actually helps your brain grow new cells improving memory and learning.
Plus eating good works wonders too.
Agreed, now it's your turn to ask me a question.
What's one physical activity you enjoy that could also benefit your brain?
For me it's yoga, it's calming and great for focus.
That's spot on. All right, folks — we've shared some awesome tips today to help you get smarter and keep your brain sharp.
