And welcome back to the English with Neil podcast, where you will build your vocabulary and improve your listening skills through American English.
My name is Neil Humphrey and the topic of today's episode is the benefits of journaling.
I've been journaling for the past 20 years of my life and it has been very beneficial not only for my mental health, but also for language learning.
So I'd like to talk about a few benefits of journaling.
And I think they're going to help you with your language learning, your comprehension skills and a lot of other skills that you need for language production.
So without further ado, let's get started.
So the number one benefit that I find For journaling is that it feels good and it clears your mind.
I read somewhere that we have thousands and thousands of thoughts running through our minds every single day, from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep.
We're thinking about thousands and thousands of things.
We have thousands and thousands of thoughts racing through our minds.
I think that's pretty interesting.
So the number one benefit I think for journaling is that it makes you feel good.
If you're worried about something, If you're stressing about something, if you have anxiety about something, it's best to write it down.
It's best to take it out of your mind and put it on paper so that you can see what it is that you're worried about.
This helps me a lot when I really.
When I'm stressing over something or I feel like I need to do something, I write it down and I'll look at it.
And then I go, do I really need to stress about this?
Is this really worth worrying about?
So number one, journaling feels good and it clears your mind.
Number two, for language learning.
Journaling helps you slow down and think more clearly.
When you're writing by yourself, there's no one there to talk to.
So you can think as slow or as fast as you need to.
There's no pressure to respond quickly When journaling, because it's just you.
So if you have something on your mind that it may take you a little time to express, that's okay.
Because there's no one there forcing you to give an answer.
You can take as much time as you need to.
And so journaling helps you slow down and think more clearly, so that you can organize your thoughts a little bit better.
Number three, journaling helps you express yourself better.
Now this goes back to tip number two, or benefit number two rather, about journaling.
But journaling helps you express yourself better because you're able to slow down your mind.
You're able to really collect your thoughts.
And really put into words what you're thinking about in your mind.
And so I think journaling helps you express yourself better.
Also, journaling helps you organize your thoughts better.
When you're writing something, you can see it in front of you, and so you can see when your thoughts make sense or when they don't make sense, because we have so many things racing through our minds that sometimes It's not in a good chronological order.
But when you write it down, you can see, wow, does this make sense?
As I'm reading this, can I really fully understand what it is that I'm trying to say?
So journaling helps you organize your thoughts better.
And the last one, this is the language learning tip or language learning benefit.
I think journaling helps you improve your output skills because writing is two parts.
You have to think. and you have to produce.
It helps you with your thinking, because you have to think if you're writing in English and you also have to use your hand to write.
So you're using your brain by thinking and you're producing through writing.
And these are some of the benefits that I find about journaling.
Like I said, I've been doing it for the past 20 years and I want to continue to do it through the rest of my life because journaling relaxes me.
It helps me think clearly and it's just an overall productive activity that i find that i really enjoy.
So that is it for today's episode.
