Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Tori.
Today is Monday, October 20th, 2025.
And we begin with a brazen daylight heist and whodunit from the most famous museum in the world.
In just seven minutes.
Yesterday, thieves broke into the Louvre in Paris and made off with priceless crown jewels belonging to Emperor Napoleon.
The robbers, who police say were obviously experienced, used a crane to lift them to the second floor, where they broke a window, smashed display cases and escaped on scooters with nine priceless pieces, including a necklace, a brooch and a tiara.
One, a crown, once worn by Napoleon's wife, Empress Eugenie, was dropped, broken and found by police.
The Louvre is home to the Mona Lisa, which was also once stolen but then recovered back in 1911.
French politicians are calling this latest caper, which will no doubt someday be made into a movie, a national humiliation.
Apologies in advance to Mike and his morning carpool.
First pitch for this year's World Series will be thrown on Friday.
The defending champ Dodgers are already in, and who faces them may now be known, depending on the outcome of last night's Game 6 between the Mariners and Blue Jays.
But the baseball world is also still reveling in arguably one of the best individual games by a player ever.
Dodgers two-way phenom Shohei Otani not only struck out 10 batters in six innings Friday night, he also hit three monster home runs.
The first one in his first at-bat made him the first pitcher in league history to lead off a game with a home run.
What is the ultimate sign that you've moved from kid to adult?
According to a new survey by AT&T, it's not about a job or marriage.
76% of Americans polled say coming off a parent's cell phone plan is the magic milestone.
Roughly two-thirds believe that should happen by age 21, but many of those surveyed waited until they were 27.
WhistleOut did a separate poll and found that one in five adults 20 are still piggybacking on their mom and dad's plan, and a third don't even know how much it costs.
Could sunburns be a thing of the past?
South Korean researchers say maybe.
They've developed a wearable, transparent sensor that warns users in real time before they've absorbed too many of the sun's ultraviolet A rays.
That red flag goes out when exposure reaches 80 of the required amount of radiation to cause a burn.
The team tested its tech on both sunny and cloudy days, and the readings reportedly matched.
Professional UV monitoring equipment.
While promising, the invention is not yet ready for prime time.
The researchers want to make it long-lasting and smaller, so it can be comfortably integrated into wearables such as glasses, smartwatches and skin patches.
This next story will come as no surprise to fans of Halloween and its candy.
A new survey of 2000 adults by Talker Research finds that most Americans eat through their stash twice before trick-or-treaters even arrive.
One in four confess to restocking three times or more before the big night.
Increasingly, though, candy has some competition.
This year, 40 of respondents say they're likely to hand out non-food items, such as fidget toys and friendship bracelets, out of consideration to kids with food allergies.
And to our Hindu friends, we say happy Diwali.
Today is the Festival of Lights, a big, sparkly celebration observed by a billion people around the world to mark the victory of good over evil.
The word Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, meaning row of lights which believers place outside their homes during the festivities, which also includes fireworks, friends and a whole lot of food.
Still to come, what we can learn from a dog and a hitchhiking koala.
But first, today's Kid News quiz.
What was stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris?
Some of France's crown jewels.
How many homers did Shohei Otani hit in Friday's NLCS clinching game?
76% of Americans say, what is the ultimate sign of adulthood?
Coming off mom and dad's cell phone plan, according to a survey by AT&T.
Today is the start of what important Hindu holiday?
Diwali, the festival of lights.
In today's Kid News Kicker, who says we all can't get along?
Maybe we just need a lesson from the animal kingdom in Australia, where a golden retriever gave a spontaneous cross-species piggyback ride to a baby koala.
Those who've seen the pictures from Steve Lamplow's backyard speculate.
The little marsupial fell from a tree and his dog Denny, scampered over to help.
Of course, we'll probably never know the how or the why, but Steve was floored.
It was quite amazing to see he said in a story by People, especially when Denny was running and the baby koala was bobbing up and down like a jockey.
The animal adventure was short-lived as the little joey needed to be reunited to its mother.
Steve helped the koala dismount from Denny, then put it back in a nearby tree so its mom could find it later.
She did, and so far anyway, there's been no repeat of the ride.
Before we go, it's shout-out time for our terrific Kid News teachers, Mrs Moore and her bears at Horse Branch in Horse Branch, Kentucky.
