Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to DailyEasyEnglishExpressions, the podcast.
Number 984. We're getting close to 1,000.
We'll get there pretty quick.
Well, we'll get there in 16 lessons.
Number 984 is Hang It Up.
Great phrase. Now, to hang something up, oh my goodness, there are many possible usages, many possible definitions, but today we're going to focus on one definition.
Hang it up, meaning stop.
Don't do it. Quit. Give it up.
Stop. So, when I was a kid, I knew my father, when he was a child, he played basketball and he was very good, okay?
So I knew this and I would say from about when I was eight, nine years old, I decided that I too would play basketball and I would be very good and my dad would be proud of me.
So, in seventh grade, I joined the junior high basketball team.
I was horrible. I was not only horrible.
I was terrible. And to be honest, the coach told me, why don't you hang it up this year and try again next year.
Oh my God. Give it up. Don't do it.
You're bad. You're horrible.
You're just terrible. Yeah.
So, I did. I hung it up. I hung it up.
I stopped playing basketball and I was so embarrassed.
I didn't try the next year.
No? I quit. And then when I was in high school, before high school, I told my dad, dad, I think I want to join the football team and this is American football, right?
But I was so skinny. And my dad said, Shane, you're too skinny.
Before you even start, you should hang it up.
Don't do it. Quit. Stop.
Ah, yeah. So, I did. I never even started.
Instead, I joined the running team and I was successful on the running team.
So we got the word hang it up.
Mm-hmm. So, this is such a good question.
Yeah. What is the it? Hang it up.
What actually does it refer to?
And I'm going to leave this as an open question, all right?
And if you guys know the answer, you can send me an email saying, oh, it means blah, blah, blah, blah.
And if you're right, I'll mention your name.
And the next podcast, okay?
So hang it up means give it up means stop.
Don't do it. But what actually is the it?
Mm-hmm. Let's check out a dialogue.
Who can you do? Agent Smith.
Uh, yeah. You hear that, Mr.
Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability, it is the sound of your death.
Whoa. You need to hang it up.
You need to bang, Mr. Anderson.
Okay. So if you listened to 983, you heard me do Agent Smith.
I was imitating Agent Smith.
I was copying his voice, his style, his style.
And I think I did a pretty good job, Mr.
Anderson. Yeah. I think I was, my Agent Smith was pretty good, okay?
So last week, we heard the last podcast, we learned, wow, you nailed it.
You killed it. You did a great job.
But this time, the guy who's doing, the guy who's imitating Agent Smith, does a terrible job.
Agent Smith, by the way, everybody is in the matrix.
He's the bad guy. We don't like him.
He did a terrible job. So the guy says, oh, you need to hang it up.
You need to stop. It's just horrible.
That was garbage, man. It was terrible.
Don't, don't, don't do it.
So what about you? Is there anything that you have hung up because you were terrible?
Is there anything that maybe you should hang up because you are terrible?
