Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to DailyEasyEnglishExpressionsThePodcast.
This is number 982. Getting close to a thousand.
Today's expression is very good.
An axe to grind. I have an axe to grind with you.
It's not true, I don't. An axe.
So an an, the article n, the axe, n axe, an axe.
And we also spell it a-x-e.
I think most Americans simply spell it a-x.
You know what an axe is? It's that really sharp tool that we use to cut down a tree or to split firewood.
Yeah, an axe. Firemen, firemen have one.
If the building is burning and they need to, you know, get into the door, they might use an axe to cut apart and break down the door.
An axe to teo, infinitive to grind is our verb, gr-i-n-d.
Now, if you have an axe or if you have a knife, if you use it a lot, eventually the axe becomes dull.
The knife becomes dull.
It's not sharp anymore and we need to sharpen the knife or the axe.
So when we sharpen a knife or an axe, we use the verb gr-i-n-d.
I need to grind the axe. I need to grind my knife, okay?
And it means to sharpen.
But if I say I have an axe to grind with you, well that means something completely different.
This is an idiom and it means I have a problem with you.
I am angry at you. You did something or you said something that is making me very angry and I am not happy.
I have an axe to grind with you.
But once again, I don't.
I like you. Well, actually, I want you to like this podcast and share it with your friends.
Then I will like you. If you say this podcast is terrible, then I have an axe to grind with you.
Check out the dialogue.
Why did Bob suddenly say mean things about Sally?
He has an axe to grind. Why?
That happened. Well, someone told me that Sally was saying that Bob has bad breath.
Oh, yeah, bad breath. That can make people angry.
Bad breath is embarrassing.
Ooh, it stinks. That can be embarrassing.
So if somebody is walking around the company and saying, oh, you know, coach Shane has bad breath, coach Shane has bad breath.
Why are you doing that? Why are you embarrassing me?
I'm angry now. Now I have an axe to grind with you.
Don't say mean things about me.
Talk to me. Give me some gum.
Right? Give me some listerine.
Uh, tell me to brush my teeth.
Right? Don't be telling everybody I have bad breath.
If you do that, I'm going to be angry.
And then I will have an axe to grind with you.
Don't do that. And that's the idea.
It's a great expression.
It's a terrible expression, but it's a common expression, right?
People do mean things to other people.
And if you do mean things to other people, they are going to have an axe to grind with you.
So be nice. Okay? That's my message for today.
Be nice. Be nice. Be nice.
Have some whiskey and ice.
I have no idea. Okay. So that's it for the expression.
