Hello everybody, my name is Cochain and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to DailyEasyEnglishExpressions.
The podcast. Today is number 976 and the expression is FOMO.
Have you ever heard of Bogo?
Maybe we'll do Bogo in the future too, but today it's FOMO.
FOMO. FOMO. Fear of missing out.
Fear of missing out. Yeah.
Did you ever like maybe you were invited to a party and actually you did not want to go?
But anyway, you went because maybe something exciting would happen.
Maybe the person you liked was going to be there.
You don't know, but maybe.
Maybe it's going to be fun.
Maybe everybody's going to joke about you, tease you, so you have to be there.
In this situation, if you do something, not because you want to, but because you worry about skipping it or not being there, that's called FOMO.
The fear of missing out.
The fear of missing out.
Nowadays, FOMO is a huge problem because of social media, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, Twitter, all of those social media things, TikTok.
People worry. So they always go and check their email, they always go and check their comments, check their friends, upload a picture and see if somebody liked it.
They're always worried that you're not doing enough, that somebody else is doing more, that you could be doing more.
And this is a situation where we use FOMO.
FOMO. We say FOMO, fear of missing out.
Check out the dialogue.
Why are you always on your phone?
I want to know what's happening in the world.
FOMO. Yeah, I'm afraid of missing out.
So what? You know, right now it's 2020, September.
Yeah, we got COVID-19. We've got the United States presidential election between Trump and Biden.
We've got Antifa, we've got BLM, we've got huge forest fires in California and Oregon.
The stock market is going up and down.
Elon Musk and Tesla, is it going to die?
Is it going to survive? What's going on?
Russia is helping Trump, whatever, China is helping.
Who knows what's going on, right?
So people go online because they don't want to miss any information.
They don't want to miss it.
They want to be up to date.
What are your friends doing?
Where are they going? What are they eating?
Are they doing anything special?
FOMO. Yeah. Yeah, the best way, in my opinion, the best way to not have FOMO is to just throw your phone away.
Go back to a flip phone. Remember the flip phone, a dumb phone, not a smartphone?
Yeah. Me? Yeah, I got, I'm on my phone a lot.
I'll just tell you the truth.
I'm on my phone a lot. I don't want to miss the newest headline.
