Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to DailyEasyEnglishExpressionTheBudGast.
That's right, it is the podcast number 969.
Can you believe it? 969, doing pretty good.
For me right now when I'm recording it, it is July 6th, 2020 and it is hot outside.
Summer is in full swing.
Just spending, you know, 10 minutes outside makes me feel pretty worn out.
Yeah. Oh my God, that's today's expression.
That is today's expression to be or to feel worn out.
W-O-R-N-O-U-T. It's two words, worn, W-O-R-N-O-U-T or of course, present tense, wear out, wear out, W-E-A-R-O-U-T, to wear.
Irregular verb, so worn.
Got it? It's a phrasal verb, to wear out, to wear something out.
If you do that, you will wear yourself out.
Don't do that or you will wear out, you know, whatever it is.
So what does it mean to be worn out or to wear something out?
Yeah, I'm going to give you actually two definitions.
Remember, when you study phrasal verbs, it's actually really complicated because one phrasal verb can have many different types of meanings.
Usually they're kind of similar but not always.
Actually, you know, if you join D-D-M, that's what we learn about this all the time, phrasal verbs.
You can try it for free, www.lissmasterenglish.com.

Slash free. But so today, the two definitions I want to talk about.
The first one is, for example, shoes.
You wear shoes, right? I hope so.
Boots, shoes, sandals, ladies.
You might wear heels or pumps.
I don't know what else there is.
So right now, I have a new pair of shoes.
Actually I really love them.
They're perfect for me.
They're hookas and hookas, H-O-K-A.
Hookas are actually a little bit expensive, well, for me.
I think they're like $160.
So $160 is a lot of money for me.
So my wife actually bought them for me two years ago.
Yeah. But I just started wearing them maybe about two weeks ago.
So why did I wait so long?
Well, they're very expensive shoes.
And I wanted to make sure that my other shoes were worn out.
Yeah. And they are. So I have another pair of shoes that are very worn out.
I wore them out after about three years.
Yeah, definitely. Can you imagine the situation?
Those old shoes, the bottom of the shoe, used to be black.
And now it's a different color because I wore out the black bottom of the shoe.
On top of the shoe, you can actually see inside the shoes where my toes are.
Yeah. I know, I'm sorry.
It's, they're pretty bad.
Those shoes are worn out.
And now I have a new pair of shoes and they look beautiful and my feet are happy and they're not ugly.
My shoes are not ugly. Yeah.
If something is worn out, it can look pretty ugly.
I've got a truck and I'm trying to sell it right now.
And it's pretty worn out.
It's almost 20 years old.
It's got 225,000 miles on it.
And you know, the engine is hurting.
It has brand new tires. The tires are really good.
Those are not worn out. But the rest of the truck is looking old.
It has been used a lot and it's starting, it looks worn out.
My wife and I moved and we actually bought a house last year and we really love the house.
It's fantastic. But the house is, to be honest, a little bit worn out.
The house is almost 50 years old.
Now some houses I know are 200 years old but this house is about 50 years old.
And yep, there's a lot of parts around the house that are pretty worn out.
For example, the stairs outside.
They're safe. The wood is in good condition but you can tell that those wooden stairs are probably 50 years old.
They're worn out. They don't look all that good.
So I need to replace the stairs.
I've had to replace two toilets because the toilets they're just worn out.
They're not in great shape anymore.
This makes sense. This is the idea of something that is worn out.
It has been used and used and used a lot and you can see that and you should probably replace it.
Now the other definition I want to talk about is what I said earlier.
It's really hot outside and if I'm outside working for even 10 minutes, my energy is gone.
In that situation I can say, oh, I'm worn out.
The sun wears me out. Oh, I'm working outside.
I'm wearing myself out.
I'm tiring myself. My energy is going downtown.
These days my son Mikey just is terrible.
Last night he fell asleep at 2 a.m.
2 a.m. in the morning. I swear to God, we know this has been a pattern for him.
He's going to bed so late and he's not falling asleep earlier.
I decided yesterday I'm going to really try and wear him out.
So from about 10 p.m. I started playing with him.
I'm not joking. Wrestling running around just being crazy for four hours.
It took me four hours to wear him out and to be honest, at about 130 in the morning, I started falling asleep.
Be wore me out. My son made me tired.
Yeah. So it's a great expression.
So to wear something out, I gave you two definitions.
We're going to listen to the dialogue.
You're going to hear them boo.
And then I'll talk to you for a short second.
Here we go. Check out the dialogue.
New tires? Did you wear out the others already?
Yeah. They were bald. You look like you've been in the hot sun.
Oh yeah. I just put the tires on.
I'm worn out. Now that's another great expression.
So I think you understand the two usages of wear out, right?
But did you hear when the guy was describing the tires?
He said they were bald. Beautiful.
B.A. I'm losing hair at the top.
I'm sorry to my wife. I'm going bald.
And it's not because I keep touching the top of my head.
But it's like a tire. If you keep rolling the tire on the asphalt, on the cement, on the street, on the road, that rubber, that thick black rubber, eventually is going to go down, down, down.
And when a tire is new, you can see all the bumps.
But when a tire is worn out, it's very smooth, right?
And you have to replace.
You have to change that tire.
And when the tire is very smooth, we say the tire is bald.
Just like coaching. Baldur?
The tire is Baldur. B-A-L-D-E-R, then coaching.
So right now, you guys, I want you to do a safety check.
If you have a car, if you have a bike, a motorcycle, whatever, a trailer, I want you to go outside and check those tires.
Make sure you have no tires that are bald.
If your tire is Baldur, then coach Shane, you need to replace that tire.
