Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome to daily Easy English expression the butt guest.
Today's expression is great.
It is a phrase, listen carefully, across the board, across the board, across A C R O S S, the T H E, board B O A R D, across the board, across the board, simple definition, everything, everything, okay?
This expression actually comes from horse bedding, okay?
So if you if you like to gamble, right, there are there's something, you know, there's horse racing.
Do you have horse racing in your country?
Yeah, maybe, maybe not.
I don't know. It's popular in the United States and in England.
Okay, but I'm not sure about other countries.
Anyway, so there's horse racing.
And if you go to a horse race, you can gamble, you can bet BET, you can bet your money.
So if your horse wins, you can win a lot of money.
But you can also choose if your horse comes in second.
And you can also choose if your horse comes in third.
Mm hmm. Yeah. And there's also a way to bet all three.
So let's say you have a horse that you like, that you think might win.
But you know, it's a little bit tough.
At least your horse should come in second place.
But even on a bad day, the horse should come in third place.
Well, in that situation, there's a bet called win place show, win place show, win means you horse is the winner.
Place means your horse comes in second place.
And show means your horse comes in third place.
However, if you go to the race, and you bet, win place show, which is across the board, everything.
And if your horse wins, you win a lot more money.
It's a really good situation.
Across the board means everything.
And it comes from horse racing.
If you bet across the board, that means you're betting that your horse will either come in first or second or third.
Okay. Now, in daily English, we use across the board to also mean everything, but especially this is most common in financial situations in money situations.
So check out the dialogue.
How are your investments?
Excellent. I'm doing really good.
Across the board. Yep.
Stocks, gold, real estate, everything.
Wow, I'm so jealous.
Do you have investments?
Do you have money that you are investing?
Maybe you have bought stocks?
Maybe you have bought bonds?
Maybe you have bought gold or silver?
Maybe you have bought futures?
Maybe you have bought real estate?
Do you have any Bitcoin?
Yeah, these are all investments.
And if your investments are all increasing in value, you can say my investments across the board are doing great.
All of them are increasing in value.
I'm so jealous. Yeah, I can tell you this.
My credit cards across the board are increasing in debt.
Now, we usually do not use this expression in a negative way DEBT debt, but it's possible across the board.
My debt is increasing.
My bank debt, my personal credit card debt, my, my energy debt, my mental energy debt.
I'm dying. Now, another way to use it would be to describe maybe your English.
So students ask me, hey, coach, Shane, tell me about her, your speaking class.
I said, oh yeah, perf is a great speaking class.

However, perf really focuses on speaking.
We also have DDM and DDM focuses on many different English aspects across the board from listening comprehension to American pronunciation, to cultural background, to phrasal verbs, to idioms, to history, everything.
It's, all about American English across the board, everything.
That's the idea. It's a really great expression across the board.
You know, it's, it's the type of expression that might not be easy for you to use.
However, if you listen to English, if you watch, you know, a lot of videos and, you know, the news and things like that, you're going to hear this expression and now boom, you know exactly what it means.
