Hello everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on let's master English.
Hello everybody. This is Daily Easy English Expression the Podcast.
Today we have a fantastic expression.
It is to do the math.
To do the math. So what does this expression mean to do the math?
Well do math is easy right?
1 plus 3 is 4. 3 minus 1 is 2.
3 times 3 is 9. 6 divided by 3 is 2.
Right? Yeah I'm pretty smart huh?
2 cubed is 8. Right?
Right? Yeah I'm pretty smart.
I can do math. I can do math.
I can. I can do basic math.
There's a lot of math I can't do or that I don't want to do.
My wife she's a math genius.
She can do lots of math.
Hopefully my boys will be able to do math.
But wait. This expression is an idiom.
It doesn't actually mean work with numbers.
Do the math. Hey man do the math.
What does that mean?
It means figure it out.
Think about it. Look at the logical steps.
It's not that difficult.
Look at each step. Look at each piece and then you will understand.
Then you will find a solution.
Then you will see. Okay so let me give you a great dialogue which should explain how to use do the math.
Yeah I think I should break up with Sally.
Why? Let's do the math.
Her birthday was last week.
I got her roses and a diamond necklace.
Well your birthday was yesterday.
What did she get you?
She got me a $5 Starbucks gift card.
Ouch! Yeah that's boy.
So the guy got his girlfriend roses and a diamond necklace.
Very nice. Very expensive.
Very romantic. You know serious gifts.
If you give a woman gifts like that.
That's serious. That shows that you are pretty serious about the relationship right?
Or maybe you're just rich.
And what did the woman get the guy?
A $5 Starbucks gift card.
Yeah that's really cheap.
A lot of companies give out $5 Starbucks gift cards for free if you just go there.
That's really really really really cheap.
That's not cool. So yeah I think it's time to break up with her.
I think I should end the relationship.
Why? Why do you say that?
Well let's do the math.
Let's look at the situation.
I invested a lot of money to show my commitment.
To show my love. To show her that I love her on her on her birthday.
You know I did. And then on my birthday she doesn't do anything.
A gift card. $5. What the hell is that?
It's nothing. It doesn't balance.
If you look at the two pieces and add them together.
If you do some math you can see that my love for her is much greater than her love for me.
So therefore I should probably stop wasting my time and I should end the relationship.
Right? Do the math.
That's the idea. How is your English?
Yeah your English. Yeah your English is good right?
Your listening is okay.
Your idiom usage is not bad right?
Is it perfect? How is your pronunciation?
Is it perfect? Do you understand everything you hear?
