Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.

Hello, everybody. Welcome back to daily Easy English Expressions, the podcast.
It's a Tuesday morning for me and kind of a sad day.
I just learned that one of my neighbors, an old lady, a grandmother, her dog was run over and it died.
It's a very sad story in the neighborhood.
If you've ever had a pet, most of us, if you've had a pet, would be a cat or a dog, but it could be anything.
Those pets become like family and when we lose one, it's just really sad, especially when we lose one too early.
When I was a child, I had a dog and it died from poisoning.
This lady's dog was hit by a car and it's a really sad, sad situation.
So, RIP. Rest in peace to her little doggy and to all of you out there, if you have a pet, I hope that you and your pet have a lovely happy, wonderful day.
Give your pet a hug.
Okay, today's expression is a nice one.
It is a nightcap. A nightcap.
It's a noun. N -I -G -H -T -C -A -P.
Yes, it's one word.
N -I -G -H -T -C -A -P. So, a long time ago in European culture America, Europe, a long time ago when men went to bed at night, I guess women too, we actually wore a kind of hat.
Yeah, we called it a nightcap and in the winter time, not in the summer time, but in the winter time, we would wear a cap.
And it would help keep you warm.
You know, the nights can get really cold.
Of course, nowadays we have good heating systems and I don't think anybody wears a nightcap anymore, but that's the idea.
So, a nightcap traditionally was a hat that you wore when you went to bed.
Right before you went to bed, you put on this hat.
Well, that type of nightcap we no longer use.
Instead, now we have a different type of nightcap that many people enjoy, including me sometimes.
What kind of nightcap is it?
I'll tell you after you listen to the dialogue.
What a long day. Yes, you want to have a nightcap?
Oh, that sounds good, but we need to sleep.
Oh, smart. We both need to be up early tomorrow.
Okay, so you hear a husband and a wife, small conversation.
It's been a long day.
The wife suggests a nightcap and the man says, no, we need to sleep.
And she says, you're right, we need to wake up early tomorrow.
What is a nightcap?
A late night drink.
And I don't mean water.
I don't mean milk. I don't mean coffee.
I don't mean tea. I mean alcohol, especially maybe a shot of whiskey, maybe a glass of wine.
It could be a beer.
It could be some champagne or something else.
But that's the idea.
So, we use the word nightcap when we want to, for example, with my friend, hey, John, you want to have a nightcap?
And the idea is one drink before we go home, to our, you know, wives or whatever.
If I say it to my wife, do you want to have a nightcap?
That would be a late night drink before we go to bed.
Okay? Now, some people like to drink because it puts them to sleep.
But in my situation, if I drink too late at night, especially too much, in the morning, I don't feel good.
So, I do like to have a nightcap sometimes.
But my nightcaps tend to be very, very small and very, very nice.
Do you like to have a nightcap?
Do you like to have a late night drink?
Yeah. What do you enjoy?
Leave a message I'd love to hear.
